Caledonia mayor warns of violence

Toronto Star Article

Apr 28, 2008
THE CANADIAN PRESS

quote: A Six Nations blockade of a southern Ontario highway is pushing residents to the brink and is paving the way for a repeat of violent clashes between protesters and town residents, the mayor of the beleaguered town said today.

As the Opposition calls for the Ontario government to immediately break off all talks with Six Nations until the roadblock comes down, Haldimand County Mayor Marie Trainer said that some Caledonia residents have already talked about taking the law into their own hands.

Ah yes Marie. Again making it sound like the whole town is about to burst into flames.

Yes there is frustration, yes there is anger but this threat is from a few, very few. The gathering she spoke about was about 50-60 people out of 10,000 which according to residents who attended in order do what they could to make sure the usual crew didn't get up to their own ways about a quarter of those gathered weren't even from the town.
The incident on Saturday night, that could have ended in confrontation was led by people who were not from town. People with known, racist overtones.
People that Marie has also shown indirect support too by refusing the requests of many other of her townspeople who see it for what it is to denounce and even show up at some of their protests and events.
Trainer herself is also know for making prejudice comments and inflaming offhand type comments, about terrorism, criminals, thugs about the ongoing dispute and threat that it brings potentially the 'start of World War III' and other over the top rhetoric.

So is there are threat of violence there? Yes, there is a small threat, by a small group of people. However that threat is based on a lot more then just 'residents' who are fed up with what's happening. IMO it's more to do with 'who' the people are and not just what they are doing.

Wow, "pushing residents to the brink" huh? So if they go "over the brink" and get violent, then it'll be all the First Nations' fault, right?

"Honey, I'm sorry I hit you, but you just pushed me over the brink."

And I love the way the Toronto Star editorializes in what tries to pass itself off as a hard news story. The "beleaguered town"? Have you every seen the Toronto Star refer to 6N as "the beleaguered Six Nations"?
