Edmonton police guilty in 'sweatbox' case

Two Edmonton police officers were found guilty Friday of insubordination and discreditable conduct in the so-called "sweatbox" incident, where police rounded up homeless people in a police van to dump them on the other side of the city.

Constables Patrick Hannas and Lael Sauter were convicted at a disciplinary hearing on three counts each under the Alberta Police Act.

A third officer, Const. Graham Blackburn, was cleared because he was deemed to be only riding along in the police vehicle at the time.

The three officers were accused of picking up nine homeless aboriginal people - six men and three women - on Whyte Avenue on a warm day in May 2005 and locking them in a police van before dumping them about 90 minutes later in a parking lot in the north end.

The case received a lot of media attention. There were questions about whether the officers' actions were racially motivated.

The presiding officer at the disciplinary hearing, Calgary police Insp. Paul Manuel, vehemently rejected this view. After listening to all the evidence, he said he believes the officers had a genuine concern for the well-being of the people they transported that day.

However, Manuel said the incident tarnishes the reputation of the Edmonton Police Service.

Erika Norheim represented some of the complainants.

"These are highly vulnerable people who can easily be taken advantage of in a way that many other members of society could not be," she said after the hearing. "It was clearly wrong."

Sentencing submissions will be made in three weeks.

An additional three officers have already been disciplined in the matter.

Witnesses told the disciplinary hearing in June that they were picked up on May 20, 2005. They said the van was sweltering and crowded. Some people had to sit on the floor because there wasn't enough room on the benches. They were hot and arguing among themselves. One woman had to urinate on the floor.

Police finally stopped the van and let everyone out in the area of 81st Street and 127th Avenue.

The incident was brought to light by a story in a newspaper written and sold by Edmonton street people. After a year-long investigation, the RCMP announced in June 2008 that no criminal charges would be laid against the officers involved.

In February 2010, Edmonton police decided three officers would face an internal disciplinary hearing.

what is appalling I'm not sure here?

Is it because she is frustrated with being sensored when pig is a common barn yard word and often used to discribe the police when they act like they are down on the farm, Pickton farm hanging about with old Willie no doubt?

I don't mean any harm but Maysie even Orwell knew the advantages of taking farm creatures and turning them into people for the greater affect and it is troubling to see someone being threatened for being upset for a similar use of the word.

His book was not sensored and Animal Farm still hangs out in the shelves in school libraries and a must read for English students also a favorite of mine as author brings to life are big old mixed up world and helps make lite of it so many will have a better understanding of our capatalist system and its corporate pigs.

If anyone would like to talk about the new babble policy, go to the existing thread.

If anyone isn't able to control themselves, I'll close this thread, which would be a shame since racist acts and violence by the police, all over Canada, continue and it's important for there to be a space to talk about it.

Anyone else ever been taken on a starlight tour? I know an elder here in Winnipeg who had it happen to him in the 80s. In winter. This sweatbox thing is just as bad. The pigs think of it as relocating wild animals, like they do with problem bears. I hate the pigs.

Here in Toronto its called the cherry beach run.

Ive known several people taken on cherry beach runs. Some have died from it (cherry beach is a beach on Lake ontario, in Toronto but on an island in a industrial area far from the actual downtown or anyone)

The police are the military arm of the political class.  They are to be feared.  It is extraordinarily disturing when the political class requires the population to hand-in their arms via gun control so that the only armed citizens will be the police.  This doesn't end well.

E.Tamaran, you can't veer off topic (post #1) and target and harass rabble staff. You also can't tell babblers to "stay the fuck out". (edited to correct my earlier assumption that STFO was a typo for STFU)

So if this distraction is done, returning to the thread topic would be a good idea.

and the police wonder why people don't trust them?  maybe if they spent less time indulging their violent racist criminal instincts, and spent more time stopping actual crimes, instead of instigating them, we'd all be better off.

the problem is police know all too well what their real purpose is, keeping marginalized people in their place and maintaining a vicious system of class and race discrimination.
