babble is rabble.ca's discussion board but it's much more than that: it's an online community for folks who just won't shut up. It's a place to tell each other — and the world — what's up with our work and campaigns.
Apparently their tax plan is to not have any taxes, and they are inviting other Americans to renounce their US citizenship and join their tax free nation.
I'm not sure where this information is coming from, but it got me wondering if they would accept Canadians who would pay taxes?
Aw come on. clersal! That didn't call for an apology. Who's to say that there is necessarily a connection between a product and a tribal group?
In my opinion, this waiting to pounce puts a chill on the board.
On the topic:
The main question is, will it build walls or tear them down? I'm certainly for self-determination.
quote: said Means. "Energy independence using solar, wind, geothermal, and sugar beets enables Lakota to protect our freedom and provide electricity and heating to our people."
This is great - though I doubt Bush and his oil patch friends will be celebrating.
quote: "After 150 years of colonial enforcement, when you back people into a corner there is only one alternative," emphasized Duane Martin Sr. "The only alternative is to bring freedom into its existence by taking it back to the love of freedom, to our lifeway."
The many others in that nation mired in war may learn something from this. We can hope.
quote: I would prefer that the western appropriation of aboriginal symbolism and identity not be reconstituted within this forum if possible, thank you.
And I thought it was that to which clersal directed the apology.
Okay, could we get past this please? bliter, if you've got nothing to add beyond stirring people up over a non-issue (it was over before you intervened) then please, just stay out of the thread.

Never miss an opportunity, do you? Your churlish response was totally uncalled for. When you like to NAME me, what message are you trying to send other posters?
Bliter you are right I do walk on eggshells about subjects I know nothing about. You have never said something idiotic before you thought? I do and to end this absolutely stupid discussion over my mistake I am going to remove it all because between the two of us we have nicely managed to fuck up a thread that was interesting. SHIT.
I was having problems accessing the Lakotafreedom site (FM's post), and I'm now seeing this on it:
quote: Aho! We've had so much web traffic, our site crashed. Sorry for the delay. Thanks for your interest!
Pilameya! Many thanks to all people who are sharing their support and solidarity with us. The whole world is watching! We have heard from people all over the world: Turtle Island, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Russia, Eastern and Western Europe, Australia and our Native sisters and brothers in Hawaii.
If you get a page not found message, be patient and try again in a few.
From Russell Means, Itacan of Lakota: “United States colonial rule is at its end!”
I've been searching for something official from the tribes. Can't seem to find anything. This looks like a group of activists making this declaration, not official tribal action.
quote: The four member Lakota delegation traveled to Washington D.C. culminating years of internal discussion among treaty representatives of the various Lakota communities. Delegation members included well known activist and actor Russell Means, Women of All Red Nations (WARN) founder Phyllis Young, Oglala Lakota Strong Heart Society leader Duane Martin Sr., and Garry Rowland, Leader Chief Big Foot Riders. Means, Rowland, Martin Sr. were all members of the 1973 Wounded Knee takeover.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I've seen nothing in the mainstream media yet. Does anyone know if there has been a response from the US government yet?
quote: Russell Means - for his mid-December announcement in D.C. that he is unilaterally withdrawing the Lakota Sioux from treaties with the United States. News flash to Means: treaties are made between nations; you are a person and not a nation; you are not empowered to speak for the Great Sioux Nation; as an individual, you can only withdraw yourself from coverage of your nation's treaties. (Means is the same Oglala Sioux actor who tried to beat domestic violence charges by challenging the sovereign authority of the Navajo Nation to prosecute him - he took it all the way to the Supreme Court and lost.)
Have the official Lakota leadership waded into this at all, does anyone know?
Regardless of what authority Mr Means has as simply an activist, this is a brilliant move to bring awareness to the dismal affects of colonialism on the Lakota, and no one can really begrudge him the brilliant PR tactic. And who knows where ideas like this can actually lead.

And now because of their threat of secession, their servers are crashing.

The Lakota Freedom site appears to have been updated again I think.
quote: For more than a year and a half prior to this December announcement, Lakota delegates have been meeting with the traditional treaty councils of Lakota to build critical mass for this action.

Oh get over yourself. clersal made a silly comment about an offensive commercial which rips on FN people, I politely pointed out that it was not particularly appropriate, and you had to jump in in high dudgeon to the rescue. When I choose, I will cross the border from pompous and go straight to disdainful, especially when you post such useless and unwanted hostility.

I do worry about how the US Feds are going to react.

I didn't read the thread and the only thing that caught my eye was Lakota and I posted something very stupid.
Nobody was waiting to pounce.
I just knew that the product had no affiliation with the nation.
And I thought it was that to which clersal directed the apology.
Thanks for bravely sticking up for white supremacy.

I modestly submit that my contribution to this thread was as legitimate and constructive as his or yours.
It was not my intent to be critical of clersal. I just felt the apology was illustrative of how so many appear to be walking on egg shells.
Examine the link and your bias.

"Traditional treaty councils"
Are there also 'government controlled' councils like the Band Councils here?
Oh...it's a native board. Hope this helps, they have links to most media articles.
