BC Natives Fear Violence Over Mine

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-columbia/story/2010/04/26/bc-taseko-min...

"First Nations Chiefs in BC's Southern Interior say thousands of their bands' members will use any means they can to stop a major mine in the Chilcotin region.

An open pit copper-gold mine to be dug by the BC company TASEKO MINES [Toront Stock Exchange] Ltd. has been proposed for the Nemiah Valley about 160 kilometres southwest of WIlliams Lake..

Stone Chief Ivor Myers told CBC that extracted resources are 'stolen property' and said he also feared violence. 'I don't want to see something like that where there's confrontation with the military...This is a sacred site for our members,' he said. 'Our water is our No 1 resource. It's worth more than gold.'

'We're a peaceful people', said Anaham Chief Joe Alphonse, 'but if it comes to that, we're not intimidated at making a stand.'

From Gustafsen Lake to Fish Lake

http://www.thecanadian.org/k2/item/1166-gustafsen-lake-fish-lake-youtube...

"...This past Saturday, Chief Baptiste personally (and alone, I'm told by solid sources) confronted Taseko's trucks that had just moved into the territory to begin work. Having been informed by the chief that they were trespassing, the truck drivers turned around and left.

Now this week, Taseko mines has asked for an injunction against the Tsilhqot'in, seeking to bar the First Nation from entering THEIR territory.!

So to our provincial and federal governments - and particularly to Ms Clark - I say, think long and hard before you venture down this road. It can only end badly.."
