Does West Van really have high child poverty?

A West Van MLA is investigating a supposed high-rate of low income families with children in the wealthiest suburb of Canada. Why would genuinely poor families live in a community where the police will pull you over for driving a beater? Come on, we know what's really going on here. Once again, rich people are dodging taxes. Call in the CRA, Sultan.

Note: "(Households on Xwemelch'stn (Capilano 5 Reserve) were not included in Statistics Canada's data.)"

What does this have to do with tax evasion?

The fact the issue is hard to see in West Vancouver shouldn't lead people to doubt that it's real, said Montani. Poverty is often hard to detect, since those experiencing it generally try to keep it concealed. "From our experience, low-income families tend not to jump up and identify themselves. There's a stigma attached to being poor, so people tend to hide it really well."

I think it was Raoul Duke who said that poverty is hard to know because of all the hired bullshit. Sure we need daycare. We need it across Canada. But they want to do it piecemeal so as not to break with their free market baloney. What's afta NAFTA?

I have to echo Vansterdam.  What does this have to do with tax evasion?

Your income appears to be less when you don't report it. The only criteria they apparently use is reported income.

So you're saying that there really isn't a high incidence of poverty in West Van.  That people only appear "poor" because they're not reporting their income and are evading taxes?  Nice to know.

We're all independently wealthy in Canada. Everybody knows it. There are no poor Canadians who pretend to look for jobs which governments pretends are there for the asking. It's like Soviet communism only duller and greyer.

There really are NO poor neighbourhoods in West Van. You have to live in the Lower Mainland to know this. The idea that there is significant child poverty in that area (minus Xwemelch'stn) is totally laughable. It is hidden income. Who is surprised that our local drug mafia and owners of slave-labour factories in the developing world are dodging their taxes? You have to understand how people get rich here. Not legally nor morally.

Poverty is a huge problem in most of the Lower Mainland but not in West Van.

In Richmond there are a number of neighborhoods that show up as anomalies for their poverty levels.  For example Terra Nova registers some of the highest numbers even though it is a new neighborhood with mostly large single family households.  The common view is that the area is rife with income tax dodgers and immigrants hiding their foreign income sources.

So we asked for help from stats Canada.  It is a project that is still in the works but some of the preliminary findings are very interesting.  For example Terra Nova has had a serious spike in multiple families with the same address.  Yes there are monster homes, but lots of them are crammed full of low income families.

I am not at all familiar with West Vancouver, but I think we should be cautious in making snap judgements.

FRAGILE B.C. FAMILIES SLIPPING THROUGH THE CRACKS OF A PATCHWORK SYSTEM OF SERVICES, REVIEW OF CHILD DEATHS FINDS(pdf)

Quote:
VICTORIA – Vulnerable infants throughout B.C. are at risk because of a patchwork of services that exists across the health and child-serving systems, says a report released today by B.C.’s Representative for Children and Youth.
“Some of the most fragile families in our province are slipping through huge cracks here,” said Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond. “Government needs to take a hard look at this. We need to fix the existing lack of a coordinated and responsive approach, and create seamless coordination among all support services.” The report, Fragile Lives, Fragmented Systems: Strengthening Supports for Vulnerable Infants, is an aggregated, in-depth look at the lives and deaths of 21 B.C. infants. As recommended in the Hughes Review, a large group of infants’ lives and deaths was examined in detail, and the information collectively studied to identify and analyze trends. Findings were then looked at in a broader scope to see if identified factors existed across the province, in order to determine what needs to be addressed in broader public policy to improve the child-serving system.

Liberals suck!
