On the occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination:
Speaker Dr. Sarah Ahmed will present "Happiness, Race and Empire" followed by a wine and cheese reception on March 19 from 7 to 9:30 pm in the Accolade building auditorium (East).
Dr. Sara Ahmed is professor of race and cultural studies at Goldsmiths College. She is currently holding a Visiting Chair in Women's Studies at Rutgers University, New Jersey. She works at the intersection between feminist theory, critical race studies, post-colonial theory and queer studies. Her publications include: Differences that Matter: Feminist Theory and Postmodernism (1998); Strange Encounters: Embodied Others in Post-Coloniality (2000); The Cultural Politics of Emotion (2004) and Queer Phenomenology: Orientations, Objects, Others (2006), as well as 7 co-edited books and journals on feminist and post-colonial themes. Her next book, The Promise of Happiness, is forthcoming with Duke University Press. She has begun work on a collection of essays on racism, diversity and language.
