Hate crime in BC caught on video and posted to YouTube
CBC: Trio charged with assault in apparent B.C. hate crime
Apparent B.C. hate crime leads to 3 arrests
Three men have now been charged with assault in an attack on Vancouver Island that appears to have been racially motivated.
The accused, aged 19 to 25, were arrested after Jay Phillips, 38, was punched and kicked in the parking lot of a Courtenay fast-food restaurant on Friday.
...
In an interview on Tuesday, Phillips told CBC News the attack was not an isolated incident.
He said that he and other minorities in this town are often yelled at and pushed around - and they're tired of it.
People using a particular racial epithet are "calling me a slave," Phillips said.
"I'm nobody's slave. That's a hate crime to me and I want these guys prosecuted to the maximum."
The men's intent was obvious, Phillips said.
Beside the racial epithets, they threatened him and his family with violence.
"Get the hell out of town, we're going to come back and lynch you," Phillips recalled the men screaming.
"I remember the word 'lynch' quite a bit - 'we're going to lynch you and your whole family.'"
People in the small Vancouver Island coastal community were shocked.
I think there was a typo, "people" clearly means "white people".
I also think the discussion about this, given this thread's contentious content, is extremely appropriate.
Obviously the use in this case is that of being violent racist assholes.
The other, well, it's as simple as what triciamarie said in the other thread, which I will paraphrase: If I don't belong to the community that is both a target and has reclaimed the term*, then I have no opinion.
Oh, the YouTube link.
* And yes, there is no consensus in the Black community (whatever that is) about the reclaiming of either n***er or n***a. Very strong arguments are made on both sides, and again, as someone who will never be hurt by the word and the violent actions associated with that word, I have no opinion.
Does it?
the brotha held it down RBG all day. Cant even say more

I use some words that would be offensive if used by someone else - I figure it's ok for me to use them, given my history. I guess you could say I'm "reclaiming" them. So I agree with triciamarie's point. On the other hand, I thought RP's family roots were in India (because of his name and some things he has said). But anyway, RP aside (and I kind of enjoy his typing, though it's hard for me to read - standard English is hard enough!), triciamarie is right, I think.
I never knew no india niether did my ancestors. If ur talking about east ethiopia which changed by the arabs and then europeans then ye but that aint even to discuss I spit the history already if u care to go look it up I dont feel like arguing with white ppl over what I am today cuz honestly it aint ever gonna change. Right about what tho? Threads are crossing lol
I watched the video, they were cowards, I hope they see some real consequences for their crime and that it wakes the people of that community up to the racism Jay Phillips spoke about.
theyll just see it as a incident like how could those ppl do that they wont realize they own shit and after a bit theyll be bacc to their old shit. Thats how it goes
