Our oldest son has to do a small project in grade seven on a first nations people. He has chosen the Mi'kmaq. Does anyone know of good resources which would be age appropriate.
None come to mind. My wife is a school librarian and would probably know- I'll try to remember when she gets home.
You could try the Migmaw Cultural Centre in Milbrook [Truro]. Even if they don't know the answer, it would be useful for them to be alerted to the question. Encourage tour son to call them himself. I know they'd love it.
And it wouldn't hurt to mention that you would be interested in something that covers the same kind of territory as Dan Paul's We Were Not the Savages.
Since there a number of band schools in the Maritimes, and the Migmaw Educational Authority [also in Millbrook], I'm guessing the existence of a basic text is very likely. If so, the school librarian would either have it on tap or could quickly enough find it.
Definitely have have your son check out http://www.mns-firstnet.ca/links/legends/ for some wonderful stories about Glooscap. I heard a good number of these from my grandmother, who likely picked them up from students when she was a teacher near the Shubenacadie reserve.

Thanks, KenS. Our son will also get time at school to look at resources. Project is do on the 17th.
Caissa try the following book We Were Not The Savages
http://www.danielnpaul.com/WeWereNotTheSavages-Mi%27kmaqHistory.html
It's widely available.
Thanks, Stargazer.
Excellent source, but definitely not digestable by many 12 year olds.
Even if your son could, it would be good if he has something he can share.
It should be fairly easy with Caissa to help. I know it is a little weighty but 12 year olds are pretty smart.
The 12 year old in question just got sent home sick from school.
If he's up for it, the correct name is Glooscap Heritage Centre. [You see it driving to Halifax.] And the phone is 902-843-3496 or 93.

Thanks again, KenS. I'll be going on a week's vacation in an hour. See you all when I get back.
Good luck!
Just remembered to get back with what the school librarian suggested.
A number of titles by Ruth Whitehead. I beleive she does not write only about Migmaw and Maliseet- so you'll have to choose among the likely titles.
She opined that my idea of using a text that is used in Migmaw schools was a deadly idea. Right, what every kid wants- more texts.
