Taking my own suggestion from here, this thread is designed to be used by Rabble.ca to provide Babblers with regular and ongoing updates regarding Rabble.ca software fixes and upgrades.
It will serve two purposes: (1) Provide Babblers with timely notices of feature changes and software fixes and (2) give props to Rabble.ca for when those changes are made.
FYI, I have concerns about Sven starting a thread like this. Sven, who isn't a volunteer or staff with rabble, and who consistently offers little to no positivity to the babble community. But that's just me. The mods are having a discussion and someone will respond shortly.
Well, the proposition that Sven actually runs Rabble would explain much, wouldn't it.
As far as this thread goes, personally I don't have a position. There's nothig which contravenes policy, and like all threads, it shall unravel as it will.
The most recent upgrade I am aware of is the new limit on the length of posts.
I don't know what that limit is, exactly, but I do know when I have exceeded it because when I preview the post it comes out blank.
This exciting new feature enables me to make sure my entire post can be read by everyone, by ensuring that it will become visible onscreen after I split it into two posts.
rabble.ca is not facebook friendly. I just tried to post a link to a rabble.ca article and instead of posting a picture and snippet from the article all I get is a box that says rabble.ca without the name of the article or any hint of what it's about.
Not very useful. Same thing happens if I try to use the "share" box on the article page.
The first Rabble upgrade was to help educate us on some rudimentary formatting code that you really should know if you want to survive on the interweb.
The IT gnomes have been toiling away diligently, dealing with all the tech issues, problems, and suggestions submitted by babblers over the past four months. As we know, not everything can be fixed up overnight. The long list of bugs and tweaks has to be carefully prioritized, so that the most urgent matters receive the most urgent attention.
And, it's paying off in spades. At long last they have come up with this important improvement to the way babble threads work: Now, the word "Comments" appears above the first post after the OP in each thread.
This will make the site much easier to use and understand. Well done, gnomes!
Ah, so that is what all that text is after an opening post!! Before that upgrade was rolled out (at great cost in time and treasure), I found it all so confusing and hard to follow what was going on.
Along those same lines, it might be of nearly equal value to label the first post in a thread the "Opening Post".
Additional Complication: If the first post in a thread is blank (which is occurring more frequently as people realize that the first post in a thread cannot be edited), then the second post is really the de facto Opening Post and not a "Comment".
How should that be handled? Calling the de facto Opening Post a "Comment" will do nothing but sow confusion.
We have a long tradition of threads ending with: "Closing for length".
How about every OP being labelled: "Opening for shortness"?
Not a bad suggestion.
On the subject of "closing for length," I think it would be helpful if at the 75th post, 90th post, and 95th post an escalating warning system was automatically applied. For example, on the 75th post, the following could be appended:
CAUTION: This thread is subject to closure in 25 more posts. Please make sure your key arguments are inserted into this thread before the buzzkill occurs.
On the 90th post:
WARNING: THIS THREAD IS SUBJECT TO CLOSURE IN ONLY 10 MORE POSTS!!!
On the 95th post:
WARNING!!! WARNING!!! WARNING!!!: THIS THREAD IS IN IMMEDIATE DANGER OF BEING "CLOSED FOR LENGTH"!!! SAVE ANY INTERESTING POST YOU MAY HAVE CONSIDERED POSTING FOR A SUBSEQUENT "TO BE CONTINUED" THREAD!!!!
Followed by the inevitable:
Closing for length. Feel free to start a new thread!

I fully agree with the OP..... x.

Thanks, aka Mycroft, but I think that post probably would be better suited in this thread: "Reporting tech issues to rabble IV".
The purpose of this thread is for announcements of new fixes and updates by Rabble.ca for the benefit of all Babblers.

I'm looking at all this for the first time on my BRAND NEW 'puter, and it's GREAT!
It's fast, wide and clear.

That suggestion should go to the top of the priority list!
Ohhhhhhh..........so that's what that is! I feel so silly now..............

I think 'sow confusion' is a great descriptor of the new babble. It's a bit better than 'hog confusion'.
Maybe start the new opening post with
THIS IS NOT A COMMENT!
We have a long tradition of threads ending with: "Closing for length".
How about every OP being labelled: "Opening for shortness"?
ohh - that is a much better idea!
