Doug Ford Claims He’ll Cut CBC

Ontario PC Leader Doug Ford Claims He’ll Cut CBC Even Though CBC is Not Provincially Funded

The new leader of Ontario’s PCs thinks he can cut funding for something Ontario doesn’t actually pay for?

Responding to Ontario’s 2018 budget Wednesday, Doug Ford raised fresh questions about his basic understanding of the issues when he offered reporters a nonsensical suggestion about how he could save Ontario money: cut funding for the CBC.

Only problem with that idea? The Province of Ontario doesn’t fund the CBC – that’s the federal government’s job.

This is promising. A good couple of thoseand things could tighten up.

The key for the NDP will be that the best answer -- not necessarily the meanest could make a difference.

He could always argue for the Federal government to save money by not spending it on needed projects in Ontario...

Maybe he's trying to show that he can be just as much of a fool on his own without her help:

What a maroon. A wailing buffoon. Talk about unqualified.

If he wins and with the Trump win,the electorate are morons. You can't give a valid excuse. I think this is public knowlege about CBC. I could be wrong.

The press could sure have fun with this, though.  Every chance, ask him things like:

"Mr. Ford, if you become Premier of Ontario, would you consider posthumously honouring your brother Rob with The Order of Canada?"

"Mr. Ford, how do you intend to fix problems at Canada Post?"

"Mr. Ford, will you agree to meet with Indigenous groups nation-to-nation?"

SocialJustice101

Mr. Ford, what kind of Supreme Court appointments do you intend to make?    And do you intend to use your veto power?

After attending Doug Ford's speech, Patrick Brown is now considering a third run for PC Leadership. ;-)

Now, in all seriousness, this isn't good news for TVO.

Martin N.

In all seriousness, the greater concern is that the average voter is even less informed than Doug Ford. On the bright side, Ontarians can look forward to another term of Wynne if Ford fails to roust enough mouth breathers to the ballot box.

Ya, if he feels boxed in by this, he can always tell Ford Nation "My threat must have really scared the elites, because they've changed the rules so now the CBC is a federal thing!!"

I'm already looking forward to the years of antagonistic bon mots and superior wisdom to come if he wins. The NDP can be depended on to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory while the unprincipled Libs and goofy Cons fight over Ontariowes emaciated carcass. Only scoundrels and clowns stand for office today because disinterested voters have allowed the inmates to run the asylum.

I’m trying to find his actual comment on this cbc thing but can’t. Can someone provide a link would greatly appreciate it thanks

bottom link first post

WWWTT

I was all over that link and didn't find his comments on the cbc. It's not there.

SocialJustice101

PressProgress is a Broadbent Instutitute project, so I doubt they would make this stuff up.   But it'd be good to see the exact quote, audio/video.  Perhaps for other parties to exploit in campaign ads?

Here`s a link.  http://pressprogress.ca/ontario-pc-leader-doug-ford-claims-hell-cut-cbc-...

I think WWWTT is  looking for Doug Ford's EXACT comment, which is not mentioned in the PressProgress article.

No wonder Ford wants to shut down the Liberal CBC as it’s news department is just an extension of the Liberal Party of Canadas Let’s cut back funding for the CBC and start funding independent media in Canada

Mr. Magoo Mr. Magoo's picture

All independent media?  "Your Ward News"?

Or just the ones you agree with on one particular day?

SocialJustice101

The majority of the current CBC board, including the President and CEO, were appointed by Harper.   I would say it shows based on CBC editorial content.

Mr. Magoo Mr. Magoo's picture

Thank you.  My favourite part of the whole "CBC is clearly biased and must be shut down" trope is that (like with the elephant and the blind men) everyone thinks it's biased a totally different way.

Who's right?  More importantly, who's wrong??

SocialJustice101

Check out  http://www.cbc.ca/news/opinion and see for yourself.  I just glanced quickly and could not find anything pro-Liberal there at all.

Sean in Ottawa

I find the CBC does a lot of good work and they are the least biased of the lot. I don't like the argument about bias. I think it is not as serious as people think and that a big part of it is the party communicating better.

Yes that's right. Or a youtube clip or something.

Reminiscent of when the GG of Canada made comments about religion and astrology or something like that. I wanted to actually see her body language and hear her words to get the full effect of where they were trying to come from when they made the comments in question.

Martin N.

So Ford did not utter the alleged quote? Will babble now be cited as a hotbed of 'fake news'? Is this a case of 'fools rush in.....' or is there a more insidious agenda at work to undermine Doug Ford? Inquiring minds need to know!

SocialJustice101

Found the exact quote:

Doug Ford in response to a question from a CBC reporter:

"My pals at the CBC. I know a way to cut some money."

http://www.raisethehammer.org/article/3470/doug_ford_said_some_crazy_things_at_the_budget_media_scrum

Martin N.

Hmm. Very little meat on that particular bone. There are no less than 20 million Canadians who can think of saving a few bucks at the CBC. I believe the problem lies in the fact that, unless professionally coached, remarks can easily be misinterpreted without context or body language. But, to the flock of anticipatory raptors circling the drain, surely Douggie has a few whoppers yet to disclose.

"Diplomacy is the art of thinking twice before saying nothing"

SocialJustice101

If a liberal politician ever made a similar comment, the cons would have turned it into an attack ad, and played it on a loop 24/7.    "He's just not ready!"  "He's just not up to the job!"

alan smithee alan smithee's picture

First of all,the CBC is NOT an arm of the LPC. That's Conservative garbage.

Secondly,I don't agree with defunding the CBC. Again, this is a popular Conservative policy.

Where was the Liberal bent when the Conservatives won? The Conservatives usually get their Senators from CTV.

The whole 'liberal' media argument is as Blue as Andrew Scheer's balls.

Conservative garbage.

@Alan Smithee

Your comments are within the context of this thread.

But the thread is based on something that up to this point is not based in fact and is not true. Therefore as I understand this forums rules, this thread should be locked.

Now that’s not to say that the issue of funding for the cbc isn’t a good topic!!

SocialJustice101

WWWTT, It is true.   I did provide the actual quote from Doug Ford above, as quoted by a Hamilton Spectator journalist.

Also, if you don't trust the Broadbent Institute (aka PressProgress), then who can you trust?

WWWTT

Ford did not say he was going to cut funding to the cbc. He told a reporter from the cbc he knew a way to cut money or something like that. The opening comment link you provided claims his comment was made during an interview with a religious group. So which is it?

i couldn’t find any comments made by Ford where he says he will cut funding TO/FOR the cbc. Therefore the thread is breaking forum rules.

SocialJustice101

WWWTT, You should re-read the article from PressProgress more carefully.  Nothing there is untrue.   They discuss his reaction to the Liberal budget, where Ford implied that funding to CBC should be cut.  They also mentioned a completely different interview to a religious group.   Just re-read the article, before essentially accusing the Broadbent Institute of false reporting.

WWWTT

LOL! You got to be freekin kidding me social justice! Their headline in bold letters says Doug Ford wants to cut funding to the cbc!

But forget the article, I’m more concerned with this forums rules of posting stuff that is not true. Now I can see a mistake like this happening to me, and something like this probably happened to me before, just goes to show that you got to do a bit of research when starting threads and posting/ replying. It can be a pain in the ass and time consuming, but I’ve found that these rules are in place for very good reasons!

Nothing will work better for Ford than fuckups by his opposition like this. He was taunting the CBC reporters, as to be expected. There is no point in white-knighting the CBC. They are no friends of the progressive movement. Fuck Doug Ford and fuck the CBC.

Well,in context of this thread,I already commented on Ford. If he said what he said,he's s not even a blowhard  but a complete idiot, and not ready for 'prime time' and unqualified for politics outside Municipal politics.

But the CBC was also mentioned. There are some crying for the defunding of CBC. I'm pointing out that that's a Conservative talking point, actually it's a talking point so much used that it's permanently printed in their platform.

I also needed to remind people that there is no 'liberal' media.

I find CBC to be fair,I'll watch that far more often than CTV.

The term 'liberal media' is a Conservative legend. It's a smear to all media outlets that report things that contradict the Conservative narrative.

'liberal media' tends to be the media that report the facts and are fair and balanced. It is why Conservatives had to create their own reality with Conservative media. And since 90% of these media outlets (TV,radio and print) are owned by billionaires uninterested in a 'liberal media' because it cuts intoo their action by reporting things like facts. If there's one thing the Conservatives loathe, despise and hate are facts. Facts get in the way of their narrative and complicate their agenda.

Thank Christ we have a channel like the CBC.  Their not independantly owned and not set up to beat you over the head all day with their partisan propaganda. The CBC isn't perfect. Doesn't Rex Murphy vomit his opinion on CBC or am I confusing it for CTV?

CTV is indepedently owned. If you watch CTV news, you'll notice a blatant bend, leaning and bias.

My local CTV news channel has been pushing for CAQ for the last couple years. Whatever Legault says and/or whenever he farts,it's a lead story. And that story always makes Legault like the voice of reason at the National Assembly. That's a slant. That's a bias and it's not a 'liberal' one.

Does no one here  having any clue that the term 'liberal media' is a Conservative talking point aimed at taking shots at you and at me?

When people talk 'liberal media'  they are not insinuating the Liberal Party of Canada but us 'hippies' that believe in 'radical' things like helping people out. It's a smear job aimed at people like me,maybe even you WWWTT. Progressives are front and centre when anyone bemoans 'liberals'. To them the word 'liberal' is more offensive than the word 'fuck' and that goes for atheists and gays as well.

It has nothing to do with the LPC but I'm sure they'd be lumped into that phrase simply for being Red and not Blue.

SocialJustice101

It has a little something to do with the LPC.   Their centrism is still too "liberal" for Postmedia (Canwest) / BCE.  All Postmedia newspapers are REQUIRED to support the Conservatives.

The deficit of progressive or even centrist media in Canada is quite disturbing.   I suppose even the US has more moderate media outlets than Canada.

The fact that Postmedia requires a Conservative bias somewhat confirms what I said about  'liberal media'  .

And the US DOES have a moderate media. It's called NPR and Republicans want to kill it with a thousand cuts. Much the same way as Tories want to do with the CBC.

As I said, the CBC isn't perfect but it's more accurate and balanced than CTV and 90%  of all  media, including radio and news paper (which people read online these days) are extremely right wing. I'm not sure if they are as bad as Levin,Savage,Limbaugh and Alex Jones, but they lean quite heavily to the right.

SocialJustice101

Centrist/progressive provincial governments must ensure that charitable organizations / non-profits can own for-profit media companies.   This would ensure survival of progressive media in Canada.

Finally a voice of reason in the surrounded by Liberals swamp!

They already can.  But they understandably lose their non-profit status if they do.  Or else what does non-profit mean??
