EI Changes and Disability
The only sick benefits available to most working people in Canada are the 17 weeks sick benefits that are part of the employment insurance system.
The Harper government's proposed changes to EI penalizes people who frequently use EI benefits. People with chronic health problems who work have periodic flareups and go on and off EI sick benefits. They will have frequent EI claims.
Does anyone know if EI sick benefit claims are included or excluded from the proposed EI calculations?
If sick benefit claims are included in the “frequent” EL use category then it is reasonable to argue that this change discriminates against people with chronic disabilities.
