Harper will ALWAYS stand behind Israel (no matter what crimes it commits).
THORNHILL, Ont. -- Prime Minister Stephen Harper passionately vowed last night that his government would always stand behind Israel, at the same time denouncing what he called "a rising global tide of anti-Semitism."
Harper was speaking to members of the Jewish community in this Toronto suburb.
Donning a blue skullcap, he reaffirmed his government's support for the state of Israel at a grand opening ceremony for a new Chabad Lubavitch centre, an organization dedicated to the welfare of Jewish people worldwide.

I guess he wants to bring about the Rapture. I don't think Canadians know enough about the Rapture. Can someone tell us lots about the Rapture. I only have a sketchy idea myself in that I know the idea exists, nothing more.
Here's something:
http://www.youvebeenleftbehind.com/about.htmlIn order for the end of days to happen, and for rapture to occur, certain prophecies must be fulfilled, and one of them is Jews regaining their homeland in its entirety according to Biblical description.
As such, end of days Christians believe that helping Israel to accomplish this, and will bring about Christ on Earth, and the rapture and all the rest of us nasty people will be stricken from existence forever. Simply put.
Since so many of the conservatives are fundamentalist Christians it explains a lot about their actions, doesn't it?
But will Jewish Canadians ALWAYS stand behind Harper? I think not.
The question is; why are they in the first place?
Who is the "they" that you are referring to?
Harper, you recall, during the Israeli atrocities of the 2006 invasion of Lebanon, found fault with a Canadian soldier who had the temerity to get in Israel's way. "What was he doing there, anyway?" Harper said, or words to that effect. plus ca change ...
Unarmed Obsevation Post UN "soldiers" might better be described as "inconvenient witnesses" .
I believe this is what you were referring to:
BBC
Israel troops 'ignored' UN plea
Wednesday, 26 July 2006, 21:34 GMT 22:34 UK
...
The UN deaths have provoked an international outcry
UN peacekeepers in south Lebanon contacted Israeli troops 10 times before an Israeli bomb killed four of them, an initial UN report says.
The post was hit by a precision-guided missile after six hours of shelling, diplomats familiar with the probe say....
The four unarmed UN observers from Austria, Canada, China and Finland, died after their UN post in the town of Khiam was hit by an Israeli air strike on Tuesday...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/5217176.stm
Of course no outcry from Harper, who would never let the UN or Canadian lives get in the way of his unflagging support for every Israeli atrocity-- therfore he blamed the UN for trying to do its job:
"Prime Minister Stephen Harper says Israel's deadly attack on a UN observation post in Lebanon
was a "terrible tragedy". He doubts that the bombing was deliberate. "I certainly doubt that to be the case, given that the government of Israel has been co-operating with us in our evacuation efforts" "We want to find out why this United Nations post was attacked and also why it remained manned during what is now, more or less, a war during obvious danger to these individuals.""

I do not believe that Harper is an Evangelical Christian.
So he belongs to an Evangelical church because he digs the music?
Under "Prominent Members", there is listed some guy named "Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada"
I think, despite Harpers displays of faith in the extroardinary courting of that sector of the eletorate, yours is a plausible position. Harper's religious calculations for power could just as easily be inspired by Bush's atheistic Karl Rove.
I think you all give Harper too much credit. I think Harper's support for Israel has far less to do with any particular fondness for that state or for the demographic that supports Israel right or wrong, or for end-times evangelicals who want to see all Jews return to Israel before being tossed into the fires of hell. I think Harper is merely reflecting the anti-Islam, anti-Arab racism that is endemic to his party and to a good number of Canadians who gulp down the daily diet of hate fed to them by mainstream, corporate media that presents all Arabs and Muslims as violent, irrational jihadists engaged in a global conspiracy - the very same global conspiracy previously associated with anti-semites.
I think its just old fashioned racism of the sort we were familiar with in the 1930s with a new scapegoat to be demonized and a new racist ideology and state to champion.
Not to give Harper too much "credit", FM, but he is also a Straussian.
In The Political Ideas of Leo Strauss, Shadia Drury at the University of Regina says "I criticize Strauss for cultivating an arrogant, unscrupulous, and mendacious elite - an elite that has a profound contempt for the rule of law, for morality, for ordinary people, and for veracity."
Harper is acting out Strauss' prescription for philosopher king.
Well, he certainly exhibits contempt ...
It's not just an issue of Christian millenialism, but the deep empathy for the Anglo Settler ideal, whether Western American, South Africa, Australian, or Israeli. Furthermore, taking up the Israeli cause inoculates Conservatives all over the world from the charges of xenophobic racism. It is sad and disgusting really, especially when community organizations become willing pawns in this depraved game of oppression and extermination. Harper is demonstrating tremendous political acumen, but to depraved and sickening ends.
To Sarann who asked about the Rapture: there's a good video here.
I have found this to be very educational with regard to the link between Zionism and the Evangelical Christians.
And here is something on Harper's faith. It shouldn't matter but ...
It explains part of it, but the more important cause is that Conservatives see Jews, particularly those living in the 905 area and the similar Montreal suburbs as a constituency that it's possible to make switch over to them for the foreseeable future. I don't think that's so easily done as they'd hope, but it's certainly far from impossible. Conversely, the Liberals see Jewish voters as part of their constituency that's in danger of defecting, so there will be little criticism of Israel from there either.
I think Ignatieff is likely to win back Thornhill for the Liberals. In the last election traditionally Liberal constituencies like the Jewish, Italian and Chinese communities voted Liberal in lower than usual numbers.

I don't know what you say about this
Thanks gene interesting reading. A long historical foundation to the stealing of Palestinian lands.
Pretty sick shit in that article eh Sean? Could imagine if the shoe was on the other foot and people were having tee shits printed with similar Israeli crap on it?
That was so sick I can't even process it fully -- other than to say it is unbelievable that human beings could do this to each other.
The fact that this was apparently condoned, if not encouraged, by the state through their armed forces is beyond repugnant.
Canada is today speaking out about the terrible law that is being proposed in Afganistan. In light of government overt support for Israel, people should be demanding a government response to this. If we are silent we condone it as well.
The article was so bad I looked to see if it was published yesterday as a sick joke. But it looks real.
Canada: the world's #1 defender of Israeli aggression
In a resolution (A/HRC/10/L.5) on Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and in the occupied Syrian Golan , adopted by a vote of 46 in favour, one against, and no abstentions, as orally revised, the [UN Human Rights] Council deplores the recent Israeli announcements of the construction of new housing units for Israeli settlers in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, as they undermine the peace process and the creation of a contiguous, sovereign and independent Palestinian State; expresses grave concern at, inter alia, the continuing Israeli settlement and related activities; the increasing number of newly built structures amounting in 2008 to 1,257; the implications for the final status negotiations of Israel's announcement that it will retain the major settlement blocks in the Occupied Palestinian Territory; the expansion of Israeli settlements and the construction of new ones on the Occupied Palestinian Territory rendered inaccessible behind the wall, which create a fait accompli on the ground that could be tantamount to de facto annexation; the continued closures of and within the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including the repeated closures of the crossing points of the Occupied Gaza Strip; the continued construction, contrary to international law, of the wall inside the Occupied Palestinian Territory; and the latest Israeli plan to demolish more than 88 houses in Al-Bustan neighbourhood at Silwan which will be resulting in displacing more than 1,500 Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem. The Council urges Israel, the occupying Power, to reverse the settlement policy in the occupied territories as a first step towards their dismantlement, to stop immediately the expansion of the existing settlements, including "natural growth" and related activities; urges the full implementation of the Access and Movement Agreement of 15 November 2005, particularly the urgent reopening of the Rafah and Karni crossings; calls upon Israel to take and implement serious measures, including confiscation of arms and enforcement of criminal sanctions, with the aim of preventing acts of violence by Israeli settlers; and urges the parties to give renewed impetus to the peace process in line with the Annapolis Peace Conference and the Paris International Donors' Conference for the Palestinian State and to implement fully the road map endorsed by the Security Council in its resolution 1515 (2003).
The result[s] of the vote were as follows:
In favour (46): Angola, Argentina, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chile, China, Cuba, Djibouti, Egypt, France, Gabon, Germany, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Uruguay and Zambia.
Against (1): Canada.
Abstentions (0)
Unfucking believable, thanks mspector.
And Sean, apparently if you dehumanize people enough, anything is a go.
Which brings us back the religious whacks controlling Canada, and their support of Israel. As religion, in its fundamentalist forms is the ultimate dehumanizer it would/does not even recognize inhumane and dehumanizing actions. After all, all the rest of people, except for them are "lost" or whatever other cliche they use to set an "othering" stance.
The list of countries we voted against says something as well.
With Bush gone and a government change in Australia I guess we can be a number one world embarrassment now.
And that we are, how does it feel Canadians, who voted for Harper? Better remove those flags from your possessions if you are travelling.
St. Paul's asked the question if Canadian Jews will always stand with Harper Since there is no difference between the policies of Harper and Iggy when it comes to Israel. I think one can state that Canadian Jews are free to support either Harper or Iggy
Is there now a difference between the Liberal position and the NDP position, or will Canadians of any ethnic group be free to vote "none of the above" in order to express their discontent with the support of the political system for Israel's racist militarist policies on principle?
This article arrived in my inbox today. I looked around and found it reprinted in this blog:
At the level of international diplomacy the Harper government's cries of anti-Semitism are a transparent attempt to silence critics of Israeli crimes. But there is more to it. The accusations of anti-Semitism are a way to advance a broader right-wing foreign-policy agenda.
So sad but it appears true -
Mullah Stevie-boy shows his soft side.
Now I am worried.
Haven't seen this posted yet, so my apologies if I'm cross-posting:
