Justin Trudeau Apologizes to Jews, Brownoses Israel, Condemns BDS

https://twitter.com/mbueckert/status/1060277153835745283

"During an apology for Canada's past rejection of Jewish refugees, Justin Trudeau pivoted to condemn BDS, equating it with hate crimes and violence. He used Canada's history of white supremacy to throw Palestinians under the bus..."

Justin Trudeau's apology became instead an unpleasant, repugnant embarrassment and a national disgrace.

Trudeau wrote:

Jewish students still feel unwelcome and uncomfortable on some of our college and university campuses because of BDS-related intimidation.

And out of our entire community of nations, it is Israel whose right to exist is most widely – and wrongly – questioned.

I have no words.

With Our Apologies: Canada Makes 'I'm Sorry' A Recurring Policy

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/komagata-maru-official-apologies-1.3587870

"Justin Trudeau, speaking in that earnest cadence of his, rose in the Commons Wednesday and, speaking on behalf of all Canadians, apologized for an event no living Canadian had anything to do with.

When the British do say 'I'm sorry' they use it most often as a question, and rather archly at that. Americans hardly use the phrase at all, especially officially.

Canadians though, have a different history. They tend to say I'm sorry constantly, which is perhaps why there have been so many official apologies from Ottawa..." (2016)

WWWTT

I have a saying "if you were really sorry, you wouldn't have done it in the first place"

Now Justin wasn't alive when all the things he's apologized for happened, but he sure as hell is benefiting from "white" Canadians past crimes!

All he has to do is say "i'm sorry" and all of a suden, the CBC will write good things about you and you get tons of free media spotlight!

I'm telling you NDPP, this guys a corporate media circus freek side show! He has no morals!

So, what's MacDonald's point? That Canada would be better off adopting the unapologetic, devil-may-care attitude of the nations that fired people out of cannons and dropped nukes on cities?

Did you read the CBC piece that's linked?  If so, did you notice how it's not actually praising him, and is if anything questioning why such an apology was necessary?

That's a pretty common response whenever someone starts talking about apologies or reparations for historical incidents.

Dont kid yourself! If there were far fewer voting Indians in Canada, Justin wouldn’t be jeopardizing far right “white” votes.

Also remember, these things happened long time ago, so what was wrong with apologizing for something that happened 100 years ago say like 50 years ago?

But hey, when the thin veil covering Canadian colonial imperialism starts to flutter away, Trudea supporters can always say “When Canadian whites killed the non Europeans at least Justin apologized”

You also missed my point, Justin has no intention of giving up his privelage his ancestors killed for!

NDPP

Exactly so. The 'hanging judge' Mathew Begbie had no more jurisdiction to preside beyond the treaty frontier than BC judges do today. No treaty equals no jurisdiction It was usurpation-as-genocide then and it continues today.  Yet Trudeau 'exonerates'...

Get my drift?

Sorry for the confusion. I wasn't responding to anything you wrote, I was responding to the MacDonald piece, and I guess by extension to NDPP, wondering why it was posted here, since it doesn't really connect to the theme of the thread.

The thread-topic is Trudeau exploiting an otherwise legitimate apology to take shots at Israel's critics. But MacDonald isn't complaining about apologies being misused, he seems to be saying that apologies aren't neccessary at all.

lagatta4

Apologies may be insincere or hypocritical, but they can be a first step, and something demanded by the descendants of groups that were treated unfairly, including denying them safe haven.

What is wrong is using the crime of non-assistance to people in imminent danger to justify Israel' mistreatment of the indigenous Palestinian population, and to criminalise those taking part in a non-violent movement against this. Including MANY Jewish people.

By the way, "virtue-signalling" is a rightwing term, like "snowflake".

Specifically, rooted in sociobiology. The idea being that expressing progressive ideas is analagous to, say, male peacocks displaying their plumage to attract mates.

Lots of ways the government can apologize for its mistakes.

But the corporate media circus freek side show Justin Trudeau who is addicted to self promotion won’t let anyone else in the government get in his limelight.

If you’re suggesting that all Justin has to do is maintain his corporate media circus freek side show status by exploiting SOME SELLECTED errors of past Canadian governments, and not let anyone else in the government apologize, then ya, he should do just fine in an democratic election as defined by an imperialist country.

Handsome Harper"s government committed errors?? Who knew???

Sean in Ottawa

First, apologies are not meaningless. They are an official record that the government admits that it has done wrong. Yes, there are a lot of them and over time the government has to reduce this - not by apologizing less - but by doing less harm.

The problem with the apologies is not that there are too many or that they should not be made but the hypocrisy of apologizing while still behaving badly. Perhaps the apologies to the Jewish community are fine from the PM who I do not think has anything to be ashamed of in terms of anti-semetic actions. However, his apologies to indigenous people are problematic since he has not kept promises to them and they still suffer from the government he leads. He should not apologise to them before taking the effort to fix his own government actions.

Because of all the times he's shed crocodile tears while making pro-forma apologies. It seems to me that being Canadian means always having to say your sorry but no one likes it when you are still doing the same thing while emoting an apology.

Yeah, that does tend to look like "act first-apologize later" behavior.
