Mulcair will become Canada's next prime minister (thread #9)
Just heard Mulcair endorsing a candidate for mayor of St. John's NL.
Are people here ok with this? Is it right for a federal leader to endorse a mayoral candidate so clearly and obviously?
No, I think it's all wrong.
Like, look how careful Mulcair is about not saying one single positive thing about the massive student movement taking place in his riding and his province - because it's obviously provincial jurisdiction, and he wouldn't want to be criticized for... well, whatever.
Surely he could exercise the same gentlemanly discretion when it comes to the municipal level? Just saying.
In 1994 i would have agreed that Mulcair's comments supporting a mayorality candidate were probably not a wise thing.
But this is 2012 and we are serving time under the Harper Government and all this philosophy pushes.
It unfortunately extends to all levels like school boards and even our local Conservation Authority have been taken over by local Con's Who endorse every local development before the public meetings even take place. Local coucillors who vote for the Development despite environmental issues becasue the developer has the support of this supposed conservation authority. Confuse and alienate the public. Sound Familiar
For Mulcair to make a real difference, for those of you who don't think he is left enough, he needs to move the country progressively forward city by city. village by village. We need to support each other of similar views so we can all draw strength.
Cacus voted for Peter Julian as cacus chair and Rathika as vice cacus chair. I assume cacus chair presides over meets of the cacus. I guess vice cacus chair is what Rathika gains from being bumped from education.
Its unusual, but nothing, unethical, municiple politicians edorsed various candiates during the NDP leadership race, so I see no problem with the reverse.
Not that unsual, Jack endorsed Pantalone in the last Toronto mayoral contest and the Conservatives endorsed Ford. The latter does demonstrate a bit of the risk when the person you endorse wins and subsequently proves himself an international embarassment but there's no reason to believe that's the case here.

New Democrats today pledged to be a stronger and more united opposition than ever after re-electing Peter Julian as their caucus chair and choosing Rathika Sitsabaiesan as the new vice chair.
So were either of these positions contested? The previous deputy caucus chair was Rosane Doré Lefebvre, who is now Deputy Critic for Public Safety.
What is your problem with Tom the LEADER. Please try keep your eye on ball. Its all about making Tom look good for the next few years. With the NDP on the verge of power the LEADER must be promoted. Over and over and over. Everything must be discussed through that lens. Once Tom declares for a policy it is the duty of this board to prove that he was right. It takes a lot of threads to make the new Emperor's clothes.

I suspect the people of Quebec will choose their next provincial government not on sovereigntist, federalist grounds but which party people will think will deliver the best government. And that is hardly surprising.
In the 1970s and 1980s the PQ won elections because they offered the best government and very often they delivered. People in the rest of Canada forget that quite often.
I think there were also many federalist in Quebec who voted BQ until the last election. I also think that there where many "other than" federalists who voted for the NDP in that election. But that is merely conjecture from afar.

I have to wonder how much this endorsed candidate is actually the enthusiasm of Jack Harris. Maybe someone in NL can comment.
If so, just the kind of thing that gets Mulcair walking into something for which he has no idea what is going on.

But he was from from Toronto
So will he endorse someone for Quebec Premier?
Is there a federalist choice besides Charest to endorse?
Interesting release:

Do we really need a 10th one is this series with the Federal election being so far away?

Sure. (I consider the CAQ and the Green Party to be federalist parties, however much they might protest at the label.)
Doesn't mean there's a good one, though.
On many days I consider the PQ to be federalist also.
The leader is good. The leader is great. We surrender our will as of this date.
