from their newsletter:
"The Ministry of Health Promotion has announced it is realigning its priorities and therefore is making adjustments to its budget lines. As a result, a number of new directions are or will be planed in over the next few months, including a complete cut to the funding of the Ontario Self Help Network at the end of September 2009."

I've worked in a professional capacity with the amazing staff of the Ontario Self-Help Resource Centre. They have a tiny budget, a small office and do incredible work. This move by the Ministry of Health Promotion is short-sighted and ultimately counter-productive to their mandate.
The capacity-building work that the Self-Help Resource Centre does has an incredible impact on marginalized communities.
I tend to think the funding is being pulled precisely because they are effective, I have no doubt that on their tiny budget they offer more support than many government programs with money.
It figures. Pinocchio has got to go.
One of the things the bankers and politicos sent Mike Harris to Ontario to do was stop us happy Smurfs helping our neighbours. Ontario has never been the same since. The charities that survived the purge have been neutered by compulsory rules and corporatized involvement in the United Way.
How can we help this worthy group? What can we do to stop this? We have to get out of this trap. We have to take our country back.
I would like to see a new volunteer grassroots movement begin - asking all Ontarians and all Canadians to give just one hour of volunteer time in their neighbourhood each month. Waivers could be arranged for those who fear lawsuits.
