Toronto community radio station CKLN is facing a CRTC "show cause" hearing where it is to demonstrate to the CRTC why it should keep its licence.

As many of you know, CKLN went through a turbulent period in 2008 and 2009 when the then-managment purged dozens of programmers after the board refused to recognize an impeachment vote by the membership. The student government witheld money from the station and ultimately locked the doors in early 2009 after a break-in.

After the election of a new Board of Directors in July 2009, the programmers who had been locked out returned and normal programming resumed.

A number of complaints ensued in 2008 as a result of the crisis at the station as did concerns about the station's programming during the lockout period. As a result, the CRTC is holding its hearing to look into the situation.

CKLN is asking listeners to send letters of support to cklnhearing@gmail.com by Monday, April 12 at noon. These letters will be forwarded to the CRTC as part of the station's presentation abnd will become part of the public record.

Please express your support for the station, what it means to you and the community, by writing cklnhearing@gmail.com. Please include your name and mailing address.

For more information see CKLN's website.

Nothing to gloat about.  The bad guys used bureaucracy to win.

Who are the bad guys out of curiosity? From what I have read there seems to be little disagreement that CRTC regs were consistantly violated despite warnings. What am I missing?

Which CRTC regs?

I've been involved in community radio for 17 years, and the only CRTC regulation I've encountered that's been at all onerous is having to adhere to a certain percentage of CanCon progamming.

Whatever the circumstances, it's hardly a good thing to lose yet another independent media voice.

They weren't keeping copies of the on-air broadcasts, for one.

Yikes.  That's an unconscious SOP for us.
