let's call it: "Pollution Induced Climate Chaos"
Comments
Was trying to post an image, which screwed up the formatting and text size of my post I thinks. Just a display of the 2 normal lows we see in the northern hemisphere (the icelandic low I already mentioned, the other is between alaska and russia which I'm trying to get dubbed 'The Palin Low'. If she can see it she must be an expert on it afterall). Then we have the configuration we've been seeing the last few weeks that puts a high directly over greenland, which reversed the north atlantic occilation (NAO).
A question to ilha: Since Steve's forces are already trying to create the idea that fighting "dirty air" is right up there with combatting carbon emissions, are you sure you want to insert "pollution" and "chaos" into the public's limited lexicon? :)
Thanks for your question George. As I'm not living in North America, nor following NA events (and Harpo) very closely, I have no idea how to answer it!
**I intended this thread to be about finding a meme that has enough gyroscopic force to not be spun another way.**
"Climate change" has always happened throughout Earth's history. Some AGW denialists spin "climate change" as something due to natural events, for example a slight change in the Earth's tilt (precession). "Global warming" is scoffed at by people who point to extreme cold weather, while very selectively ignoring the extreme hot weather phenomena.
Using "pollution" points to the physical cause that can be changed, not to the people causing it. "Chaos" accounts for the extreme weather fluctuations, the out of season weather events, and the havoc it creates for ecosystems and humans.
Some people use the term climate chaos. If it sounds alarmist, good, it's time for people to wake up.
But for a more moderate term, how about "climate destabilization" or "destabilization of climate patterns"?
Changing the labels isnt going to do anything.
KenS, I agree with what you said, except for the above point. I think labels, call them memes, are important, moreso in the fast-moving media environment of today.
quote from wikipedia (sorry I don't have time to dig for higher quality): ' Memes spread by the behaviors that they generate in their hosts. ...The meme as a unit provides a convenient means of discussing "a piece of thought copied from person to person", regardless if that thought contains others inside it, or forms part of a larger meme. A meme could consist of a single word, or a meme could consist of the entire speech in which that word first occurred. '
Pollution is a good term to hold on to and is still very applicable. It's very much tied to ecological damages like as acid rain, ag chemical soil contaminations, effluent seepage (human and livestock). These problems haven't gone away simply because they aren't being reported as much in the MSM...Pollution's a good term and it's still an enormous problem.
Boom Boom, I wasn't aware how rare the term "pollution" has become. Do you suppose it is intentional?
"Pollution" I think is generally is something people don't want and feel should be prevented.
Where did I hear, after the "Earth Summit" in Rio de Janeiro, the powers that be wanted to make sure no subsequent global environmental conferences would bear a title with the name "Earth" in it. Did they fear the power of this meme, the power of the name of our planet?
I would add Life-Sucking Planet-Wreckers and Population to Pollution as inducers of Climate Chaos.
Nutrimom, I understand such sentiments, but IMO I think blaming people per se will not be productive for anyone. I say put the blame on activities, behaviours, thoughts, attitudes, power structures, fears and insecurities, etc., but not on people themselves.
As for world population, the Worldwatch Institute reports a slowing down of the population growth rate. A lot of places with negative popln growth! The problem is not so much population, as what that population thinks and does. Blaming population is a slippery slope, and is a rationale that fits in far too easily with extreme right-wing thinking.
(and I paraphrase Al Gore paraphrasing Julius Nyerere: "The best form of birth control is the confidence your children will survive")
Rather than looking for someone to blame, wouldn't our energy be better spent on looking for solutions?
Was it Corexit that caused the Gulf Stream to falter and peter out in mid-Atlantic this year as some have predicted it would, or was it the extended Solar Minimum and El Nino? There have also been huge reversals of the trade wind patterns. Prevailing westerlies turning into easterlies that blew mid-Atlantic weather back to Hudson's Bay. How about that huge gyre of plastics in the mid-Pacific? That's gotta do something bad to currents, thermal collection, wave action and evaporation. Then there's the failure of pack ice to form in Frobisher Bay. And if the Gulf Stream is not working, what happens to Antarctica. And if Antarctica melts or starts freezing the southern oceans if warm currents stop coming from the north...
Rosalie Bertell's last book, Planet Earth, Latest Weapon of War, describes a number of serious atmospheric changes that have occurred as a result (she argues) of military experiments that deliberately messed with the weather.
I would add Life-Sucking Planet-Wreckers and Population to Pollution as inducers of Climate Chaos.
It doesn't much matter how many denialists there are or what they say. How the hell are we going to feed, water, and shelter ourselves if it won't stop raining/snowing/blowing.
May I say what a delight it is to read your straight-from-the-shoulder postings...with a leavening of humour ! I look forward with great anticipation to more in the New Year.
George
But for a more moderate term, how about "climate destabilization" or "destabilization of climate patterns"?
That's not necessarily more moderate, just more obscure or esoteric.
Another addition to the chaotic weather this year.

Our mother earth is fighting back in Australia. She has the coal mines and off shore rigs shut down. Go Mom Go
From what I've seen, New Zealand is getting it worse than Australia.
Does "pollution" properly capture the snowball effect of the earth itself (perma-frost) emitting methane and CO2? Pollution (to me atleast) neglects the feedback cycles that occour.
I like Climate Destabilization. Anyone aware of the Vostok Icecore graph? Gives you an idea of how far this destabilization has gone.
Last winter was the mildest in our history here on Quebec's Lower North Shore according to everyone and their grandparents. Today we're getting our first snow this winter - and it should be a doozy, with lots of snow and 100 km/h wind. Snow is falling as I type.
ETA: I actually wrote about this last year, the explanation for our mild winter and Europe getting it really harsh, was because of the diversion of the Gulf Stream current from UK/Europe to the Arctic. Don't know if this year will be the same.
Another, "interim" theory I heard about the other day, Boomer, had to do with the increased diversion of the jet stream from its normal, roughly west-to-east course by increasing thermal effects above the Asian mountain masses, giving the stream a more north-south pattern over both western North America and Europe. More open Arctic water provides it with the moisture for snow-making. There was a precise explanation for the increased perturbation of the air above the Asian mountain masses, but it is not coming up in the old memory bank.
And of course, the oceans continue to warm, not affected by that jet stream , 40 or 50 thousand feet above water level. And the four warmest years ever experienced all occurred in the last decade. If and when the Gulf Stream shuts down, Europeans will all need to take up skiis.

"Pollution" used to be a common word forty years ago. It's seldom used these days.
This symbol used to be seen everywhere too.
Whatever happened to "ecology"?
Yeah, I noticed "pollution" ain't used much, nowadays. I remember Ecology as an album by Rare Earth, one of my favourite bands, ever.
Huh, al-Q...that symbol is the Esperanto melon.
Changing the labels isnt going to do anything.
It is ideas, and the depth they reach.
And outright climate change denial isnt our problem. There are enough people- more than a majority- who are convinced that climate change is real. The denialists will always exist.
The problem is that the majortiy who see climate change as real have difficulty being clear on making it a priority. So they easily fall into a mish mash of "not now", "we cant afford it" and fatalism.
OpEd piece in NYTimes yesterday about the role of the high latitude and elevation Siberian land mass:
Judah Cohen is the director of seasonal forecasting at an atmospheric and environmental research firm.

It's very much tied to ecological damages like as acid rain, ag chemical soil contaminations, effluent seepage (human and livestock). These problems haven't gone away simply because they aren't being reported as much in the MSM. We're so used, now a days, to living near our algea infested lakes we've forgotten how clean our lakes used to be. I remember my dad worrying about the mercury levels in the lakes during the early seventies and how we've become limited in the amount of fish we can eat per week. I don't know what the rates are these days. I'd love to eat locally caught fish, but I'm not trusting of what we think are safe levels of mercury in our bodies. The acidification of our watersheds, and the changes to those marine ecologies, will continue to have impacts all the way to the oceans. Pollution's a good term and it's still an enormous problem.

I beleive the hypothesis of the petering of the Gulf Stream, and consequent deeper winters in Europe and North America, is only something that is seen as a possibility much further along with global warming than where we are now.
it was a La Nina event, but same idea. In either case, both these are cooling trends, and we saw the second warmest november on record still.
George Victor:
Just to expand...In 'normal' conditions, we see 2 giant low pressure zones...one being between iceland and greenland (called the icelandic low). We had a high preassure system over greenland that really messed with this, pushing the icelandic low over Europe. This reversed the usual winds (Negative NOA) drawing the warmer wet air up the North American Eastern coast (heavy snows) and drawing arctic air into Europe. The trend has seem to reversed though and we're back to more' normal' conditions.
The high above greenland is currently attributed to open arctic waters warming the air much more than it did previously. We actually lost sea ice in november as well. Turns out global warming = frozen florida and europe. and Incidentally...North American weather is actually 'too cold' to snow in alot of cases...the optimal snowfall conditions are significantly warmer than current north american climate. Means the more we warm, the closer to an optimal snowglobe New england becomes. *editted post several times for formatting, and it still looks funny. weee...this is a fun forum scriptWelcome Searosia.
The formatting is terrible. I'm not sure exactly what you wanted to do. But here at least is your text somewhat cleaned up. Where the text goes wonky, you delete all spaces and everyting between paragraphs, the put in the single 'Return'. Often you have to strip weel before the part that starts going wonky- right back to the top of the post. Especially if you start with a quotation function.
