Global Rally Oct 24/'09 - Global Warming '350' protest

"Today 350"  is the largest mass action on climate change the world has ever seen.

4,000 events would take place in 170 countries, all with the same message - that the planet could tolerate a maximum level of 350 parts per million of carbon in the atmosphere.

That message will be carried around the world, as global rallies continue over the next 24 hours.

Other Quotes from rally organisers:

"Carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are already between 380 and 390 parts per million; If we want to avoid dangerous global warming we must get the figures down to 350 parts per million."

"For the time that the CO2 in our atmosphere is above 350 parts per million we are effectively cooking the planet."

"We have to decarbonise as many economies as fast as we can."

"The time for talk is passed, real commitment to change must be made if we are to avoid devastation."

----------------Me:

Well, thats nice. I am happy to see the well organised protest that goes around the world in 24 hrs., it is really quite amazing. I would have gone if I lived in Vancouver.

It is encouraging to see how many people there are onside with this movement; for every person that actually goes out to protest there must be 1000s more who just don't go out but they do support the goals of the protest.

What is NOT encouraging to see that our emissions continue to increase above the 380 to 390 ppm mark that we are at now. We are a long way from even stabilising emissions; there are currently NO agreements or pledges in place that will change this tragectory of constantly increasing CO2 emissions globally.

We have passed the time, about 10 or 15 years ago, when we could have avoided most of the pending climate change destruction, but now the only game left is to limit how serious that destruction will be. Hearing Harper talk about CO2 reductions by 2050 seems utterly absurd!!

I agree 2050 is absurd. By my rough estimate each Canadian will have to sequester about 200 to 300 tons of carbon, that is the accumulated fossil carbon that we have loaded in our biosphere. How to do that?
