I plan on becoming one with the earth actually. I'll be up to my knees in rubber boots, red clay, and some wheelbarrow. Basement fixers left me a mess from late last autumn to deal with.

I'll be watching Hockey Night in Canada.

Heh, same here Caissa...I wonder if they'll align the start of Earth hour with the start of the national anthems again?

I'v got this nagging feeling that I left my bedroom light on before leaving for work today...pretty much negates any good I'd do from turning off my lights for an hour, assuming Earth hour occurs when my lights normally would be on of course.

New thread title suggestions:

Earth hour: Make yourself feel good while doing shit all!

Earth Hour: Corporations greenwash, now you can too!

Earth Hour: Turning the insignificant into a social movement!

Yea but cynicism's even less significant than earth hour.

True, but only by an insignificant amount.

If we're talking cynicism:

That could be optimism too...that people would only leave the engine idling for just the one hour per year.

The Earth Hour thing really bothers me, as it is one freaking hour! If people take something away from it and try to reduce consumption after the fact, that is positive, but it seems that it is mostly about not feeling guilty for one hour. Once that is done, we can all go back to our "regular" old lives as we did "our part".  Happy happy joy joy.

I agree. Earth day does nothing to help people. It should be earth day everyday. I don't play on doing anything special (I'm already into conservation of water, wildlife and trees) but maybe I'll plan something with some girlfriends and I but it's hard to get the time off because I work this weekend. It would be best though if they had an 'earth hour' everyday - to remind us every day that the earth doesn't provide one day a year, it's there for all of us 24x7!

Well, I say screw everyone who thinks one hour is enough to make them feel better. It is now earth hour and I have my LED lights on, powered by the batteries which recharge with my solar pannel every day. Typing on my low wattage computer which is also hooked up to another battery everyday, maybe I'll even pop in a movie when I turn the computer off so I can hook up my low watt TV and DVD player. A plan that was hatched last earth hour by candlelight, has now come into it's own. And I say happy earth hour to those that mean it!

I forgot about it until just now.  Whoops.  Oh well, it's just a feel good propaganda exercise sponsored by Killer Coke anyhow, to make people think they're actually doing something real for the environment when they're not.

On the other hand, maybe some people who are actively trying to curb their consumption every day might like having a special time to celebrate and recognize those efforts once a year - kind of like those of us who love people every day but like to celebrate it once a year on Valentine's Day.  So I hope those who feel that way enjoyed their Earth Hour. :)

I figure I have 48 credits for Earth Hour because our hydro was off last month for a full 48 hours. I've had enough of coping with the dark for this year. Besides, The Blues Brothers was on and that means party time!Cool

Hey, thats a good idea Boom Boom.  Next Earth Hour, I'll be selling off Earth Hour credits.  For a nominal fee of $5, I'll turn off one of my house lights for an hour sometime during the year in your name.  For just $20, I'll buy an old lamp, plug that in and turn it off for an hour.  Now thats saving Earth!

We had a very pleasant evening, Mrs. OG, the kids and dogs and I, sitting in the living room and chatting by candle light.

At one point my son and I walked up the street making judgemental remarks about our non-observant neighbours.

We managed to run the popcorn maker off the battery of our Hummer, which keeps it's charge quite nicely when the engine's idling.
