Which Organic Foods are worth it?
The higher cost is pretty well the only reason anyone would not allways buy organic foods, eh?
So, which ones are worth it? Twice as good at 10 times the price - NOT!!
But I found that Organic Bananas have come down in price, only about 25% more than regular, and they do have double the nutrition of regular bananas, they taste marginally better, and they have a little firmer pulp too.
My newest find is ORGANIC POPCORN. It costs about what "premium brands" of popcorn do [Orville Red] and the taste is like.... corn?? Its different. It is great. And hey, all the kernels pop. I vote "worth it".
GMO side topic:
Perhaps a point of contention is that almost ALL CORN these days is GMO except for organic corn.
Did I hear right? - that "organic cannot be GMO" ?? If it is labelled organic, there is no GMO in it.
Also, is it true that no food product can say "GMO Free", even if it is GMO free? Of course, that would negate the reason for never having to say GMO on GMO foods. {freedom, please.
Half the foods on grocery store shelves have some GMO in it, as ingredients or the whole thing [such as a GMO tomato]
GMO = Genetically Modified Organism. They splice genes from one organism into another. Some have been made resistant to herbicides or pesticides so the plant wont die when they spray it.
The GMOs I really try to avoid are where they take a gene from aliens [yes, from outer space!] and splice it into food so they can get inside your body, then they take over your brain and your body becomes a new alien.
- but I am not a doctor so don't trust that to be totally true.
Actually, because of GMOs in feed and the ubiquity of corn and soy products in processed food, probably far more than half of the foods on grocery store shelves are contaminated (contains GMOs or glyphosates (the main ingredient in Roundup)). Even certified organic foods may have a small percentage from compost and other contamination sources.
Most canola grown in Canada is also genetically modified.
This question (the premise of the thread) is something I wonder about as well, while doing my shopping.
Is it worth it to pay 30% more for Organic Oats? I never bother, but I'd be interested to hear the answer...
i think it's case by case. if you eat a lot of something it's worth it, if it's occasional don't worry so much.
also, some food retains more chemical residue than others, i've heard the thinner the skin the more important to buy organic. Regardless buying organic when you know it's produced with more chemicals than other foods seems worth it.
also taste. Organic peanut butter just tastes so much better, and has no sugar or other needless ingredients it's worth it regardless of the health benefits!
Organic peanut butter often costs the same as sweetened commercial brands here in Vancouver. Weird, but good!
