Could be a different world if the 25th amendment established the electorate's right to a recall vote, rather than assigning the VPOTUS and/or Congress the task of deciding that the POTUS cannot fulfil his/her duties.

To be honest, I'm not that sad, though, that the 25th Amendment basically requires Caesar's friends to be ready to make a circle and stab him.  If nothing else, it ensures that it's unlikely to be invoked because a POTUS is unpopular (or stupid, or tweets too much, and so on).

Some states have recall provisions -- I guess I'm remembering California? -- and really, I'm starting to wish that Canada had them.  On the one hand, they can provide a means by which an electorate can halt the damage done by an ineffective or dishonest leader.  On the other, a recall vote can restore legitimacy to a leader under scrutiny.  Obviously we cannot have six of them per term, but if reasonable conditions are met, I think they are a good thing.  It would mean that no leader could simply take their four years of power for granted.

I'm not suggesting to invoke the 25th amendment just because people hate him. I'm suggesting it because the man is mentally ill and that's why this amendment exists.

It has nothing to do with changing election results. He's bat shit crazy. He needs help. Although at his age,he'll never change. He's a deluded lying narcisssistic megalomaniac at the least. He lives in his own personal reality where the real world is 'fake' because it doesn't fit his view of the world.

It also has to do with the people he chooses to  run major departments. Talk show hosts, high school kids, wedding planners,hs own personal pilot etc.. etc..

He's just not fit to be leading a fast food (his favourite one too,McDonald's) kitchen, never mind leading a country, any country but in this case he's leading the world's police. He's the most unqualified President in the history of the US. Going back to the days when they were 13 colonies.

Look up my post above you. I have links to news outlets proving that he is an incompetent idiot who will give you a high position in the government if you simply compliment him. (see links above)

Now he has proven to the world tha he lives in a fantasy world. That's not hyperbole. Now he's publicly declaring that he would have ran into the school, even without a gun, to protect the children. (long pause)

He's a delusional pathological liar and a sociopath. I think that alone should get him booted out of office.

Unfortunately, his picks for the administration ensures the Presidency remain insane. He gets booted and Mike Pence becomes President. He's a complete nut too.

The only thing more mentally ill than Trump is the people that support him. In short, the US is a very, very sick and mentally ill country as a whole.

And I wouldn't care if not for the fact that we are physically attached to that insane asylum.

Is that mental illness the diagnosis of a doctor who is treating him?  Or is it your (and surely many other people's) opinion?

The 25th isn't going to be invoked because some people who disagree with him say "clearly he's nuttycakes".  In fact, for the 25th to be invoked would require people who probably think he is, AT WORST, a little unpredictable and unique, to decide that in fact he's so far down the mental illness hole that he can no longer serve.

I might not choose exactly those words (including "mentally ill") but I don't support him either, nor those who do.  But if the U.S. electorate really wants rid of him, I think they'll need to decide to vote for someone other than him (or his party).  I just don't see any realistic future in trying to bring him down by asking "would a SANE man tweet seven times in one day, twice with spelling mistakes??".

Here's a pretty funny story from the WaPo.

Aaron Blake wrote:

In a fundraising speech Wednesday, President Trump admitted once and for all that he just makes stuff up. The man who has racked up more than 2,000 false and misleading claims as president said he insisted to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that United States runs a trade deficit with Canada — despite having “no idea” whether that was the case. (Surprise! It's not.)

“I said, ‘Wrong, Justin, you do.’ I didn’t even know,” Trump said. “I had no idea. I just said, ‘You’re wrong.’ You know why? Because we’re so stupid.”

Politicians lie. Sometimes they lie and are not caught. Sometimes they lie and are caught, which usually is followed by some sort of mea culpa, "I misspoke myself", or similar.

As far as I can remember, this is the first time I've heard a politician brag about lying. That is something new.

Michael Moriarity Michael Moriarity's picture

Yes, but the funny part is that he thought he could get away with lying about the balance of trade between the U.S. and Canada, when talking to the PM of Canada. I think it's a hoot.

The latest is that Stormy Daniels will tell people her little affair with Trump was actually carried on while he was the President.

That should give the evangelical right something to think about.

It won't. They will not watch it or believe it exists. They might hear about it and say it was some conspiracy.

You can only understand US politics now if you understand how cults work.

Political Warfare in Washington Enters New Stage Following Firing of Former FBI Director

"The ferocity of the political conflict within the US state apparatus is reaching a new and critical stage. The Trump administration is openly at war with significant sections of the intelligence apparatus, while top figures within the apparatus are making ever more direct calls for the removal of the president. There is no progressive side in these conflicts. Trump and Brennan represent equally criminal factions of the ruling class, divided over foreign policy, particularly in the civil war in Syria, and more generally toward Russia..."

The Trump Administration is doing so many bad things at once that each of their terrible actions does not seem to be registering significantly in the minds of the public. I think many people are just tuning out this insane presidency.

As a result of the imperialist character of both parties, a detestable figure like John Bolton is able to return to the Oval Office."

But I thought it was Clinton who was the neocon warmonger.

Glenn Greenwald:

Bolton is an actual sociopath in the clinical sense of that term. He is unstable, monstrous and bloodthirsty. Even in 2005, when the GOP controlled the Senate and Bush got everything he wanted on national security, Bush couldn't get this maniac confirmed.

War is coming. And there will be nothing and no one to stop him.

Getting the Americans to launch such a war is Jerusalem’s and Riyadh’s wet dream

Mobo2000

What a disaster, I remember Bolton well from the Bush Jr years.    Here's a good new Matt Taibbi article on the legacy of the Iraq War, and a good reminder that the USA's slide to tyranny didn't start with Trump, and it won't end when he's gone:

https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/taibbi-the-legacy-of-the-iraq...

"Fifteen years after those historic marches preceding the invasion, we still drone-bomb with mind-numbing regularity, killing about 6,000 people in Iraq and Syria last year alone. But protests are basically nonexistent.

We've defanged popular opposition by making such bombings open-ended, mechanical and invisible. The invisibility is not just in the eyes of the media, but more and more, in the eyes of the law as well. Our wars have begun to vanish from our democratic process, the same way our "enemy combatants" just magically disappear from the earth once captured, to a secret arbitrary world we show or don't show as we please.

The legal disappearing trick evolved over several presidencies, and particularly advanced under Barack Obama, under whose leadership a remarkable progression took place..."

"Other secret bureaucracies formed. As the War on Terror expanded from Afghanistan to Iraq and outward to places like Yemen and Syria and God knows where else, American authorities began to tell us that the most significant new threats actually came from within our own borders.

"Plots to attack the United States increasingly involve U.S. persons, American citizens," then-Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said in 2011.

A few years later we discovered that the authorities had unilaterally green-lit a sweeping surveillance program here at home, capturing the phone conversations and emails of millions of Americans without our consent or knowledge, presumably out of concern for this threat..."

"

It was for sure a contributing factor in the election of Donald Trump, whose total ignorance and disrespect for both the law and the rights of people deviates not one iota from our official policies as they've evolved in the last fifteen years.

Trump is just too stupid to use the antiseptic terminology we once thought we had to cook up to cloak our barbarism. He says "torture" instead of "enhanced interrogation" because he can't remember what the difference is supposed to be. Which is understandable. Fifteen years is a long time for a rotting brain to keep up a pretense.

We flatter ourselves that Trump is an aberration. He isn't. He's a depraved, cowardly, above-the-law bully, just like the country we've allowed ourselves to become in the last fifteen years."

At practically any other time in American history, public confirmation that the occupant of the Oval Office is a serial con man who lied, schemed, and impersonated his way to public prominence would have dominated the news for weeks. ..from a democracy now headline

President Trump Pulls United States Out of Landmark Iran Nuclear Agreement

European nations are scrambling to save the landmark nuclear agreement with Iran, one day after President Trump announced he will pull the United States out of the deal and reimpose sanctions on Iran.

President Donald Trump: “The Iran deal is defective at its core. If we do nothing, we know exactly what will happen. In just a short period of time, the world’s leading state sponsor of terror will be on the cusp of acquiring the world’s most dangerous weapons. Therefore, I am announcing today that the United States will withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal.”

The 2015 agreement was worked out by the United States, five other world powers and Iran. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Iran has continued to meet its obligations under the agreement. We’ll have more on Trump’s decision to pull out of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal after headlines.

Trump's Act of American Hubris

https://www.craigmurray.org.uk/archives/2018/05/trumps-act-of-american-h...

"...Can America make it hold? In seeking to impose unilateral sanctions against the express wishes of its 'old' European allies, the USA is betting that it has sufficient global economic power, in alliance with its 'new' Israeli and Saudi allies, to force the Europeans to bend to its will. This is plainly a very rash act of global geopolitics. In short, if the US fails to prevent Europe and Asia's bourgeoning trade with Iran - and I think they will fail - this moment will be seen by historians as a key marker in US decline as a world power...."
