Sounds like a possible gladio operation. Fascistas always resort to false flag chiesa when backed into a corner.

You're right. Fidel. It's well established that Gladio operatives always use pot metal church replicas when hitting a politician in the face. Plaster is the mark of an amateur.

While Berlusconi is a thug and should be impeached for about a hundred different things, this actually sets back the anti-Berlusconi movement since the opposition is now forced to condemn this and the public may even grant this corrupt and pathetic PM some sympathy.

This will probably give him an excuse to keep protesters away from his rally, and his allies are already spinning this against the opposition.

But, I guess one can't undo it now... so..

Would a man who has face lifts and hair transplants arrange to have himself hit with a model of this?

And seeing someone smacked in the face and end up all bloody with broken teeth and have to go to the hospital and all, man that really is something to pray for! You are truly a good hearted person. God bless you frustrated mess! God Bless you!

I don't know...when I saw this on the news yesterday, all the "person in the street" interviews with Italians showed them laughing over it and saying it was well-deserved.  In fact, I was kind of surprised that they didn't balance that with people saying it was wrong.  Maybe they couldn't find anyone to say it!

True but politicians cannot act like the man in the street. They would have to condemn it and offer sympathy, however fake.

I don't think he looked all that "tough" in this case. The image of him in a state of shock with blood all over his face actually made him look kind of pathetic. It reminded me of Bush after having a shoe thrown at him in Bagdad. If he had this done to himself - it was a very botched job. This was not exactly Pierre Trudeau at the reviewing stand on St. Jean Baptiste day in 1968 "bravely" standing his ground as a hail of bottles and projectiles were hurled at him!

So what? The opposition politicians will offer the expected ritualistic expressions of sympathy and denunciations of violence etc...and within a week they will be back to demanding that he resign.

This is totally shocking. I hope the injury doesn't affect his (reputedly prolific) sex life as well.

Anyway, given that ultra-right blogs tend to monitor babble because they have nothing better to do, I think this is time for us to show what kind of collective stuff we are made of. We don't wish physical harm to anyone, not even the sworn enemies of the people.

Therefore, I am hereby passing the cyber-hat to assist Sr. Berlusconi make it through this very difficult time, where even his ability to eat has been put in question. Let me kick things off in style:

Honestly, I don't think this is something to cheer about.  I mean, when I saw it on the news last night, I snickered over the lack of sympathy average Italians seemed to have for him, and I made a wisecrack myself over it. I mean, who doesn't cheer when the bully gets a pop in the nose?

But it's not like this is a coordinated leftist strategy or anything - the guy who hit him apparently had some problems, and no one knows yet what his motive was, or his political affiliation (I don't think).  And while it's somewhat satisfying to hit back every once in a while, there isn't much useful that comes of this sort of thing beyond that fleeting snicker or wisecrack.  Especially when it gives the other side sympathetic images of a poor old man with a broken nose and bloodied mouth with broken teeth.  (Not that he can't afford to fix them like new.)

That's all well and good, Michelle, but put your money where his your mouth is. I gave - how about you?

ETA: Look, if we move this to babble banter, will we be allowed a few more childish snickers - or do we have to stop right now?

At least the facial injuries were the result of actions from a total stranger. It might have been far more difficult to understand and forgive if similar injuries had occurred on a Dick Cheney hunting excursion.

I pledge one turkish lire for the guy.   Hey, it might still have value!  (Unlike the italian version) and I have it in my coin jar.

Personally, I think he is a crooked piece of slime who should have been locked up years ago.

I thought his wife finally left him when his "girlfriend" ages started to get very close to puberty.

Lets be honest about it. He is a sick piece of garbage.

He has being  cheating justice for years, he owns half the media there, he never did anything for the economy and I do not know why the italians put up with it.

Back in ireland, our leading scumbag was  CJ  Haughey,

They never let him get the amount of power that berlusconi got.

He tried. (He was married and His girlfriend was the wife of a high court or supreme court  judge).   Too sleazy even for ireland.

Berluscconi seems to be worse.

Now, if someone wants to get stabby with a nativity scene in Italy, there's some good candidates. That would be the Northern League, which is having issues regarding one that has appeared in Verona.

It's a true sign of your genorisity that you've donated in a currency Italy doesn't use anymore.

I just watched a BBC clip of the incident and I was struck by how frail he looked - the pathetic human vulnerability, for all his power. I thought about pictures of Mussolini and his missus, bloodied and hung by their heels at the end of their reign.

Watching Obama's Nobel speech all I could think of was the Afghan deployment; and how does one summon images of Bill Clinton without the Lewinski blowjob floating in attendance?

...I wonder if this might be one of those visual associations Berlusconi will now carry with him forever, if like 9/11 its symbolic value will exceed the incident itself. The beginning of his end? Il Duce revealed to be mere mortal...or just my wishful thinking.

I was in Milan this summer where my Italian host discoursed long and profanely on this unpleasant man.

I formed my own opinion of him years ago when I watched his rightist FN police thugs breaking protestor's bones at the Genoa G8. I see his bloodied face and read reports of broken teeth and a broken nose - and remember protestors attacked at night, beaten with truncheons while still in sleeping bags, women, older folk; many hospitalized; remember the horror of the photos of pools of blood, so much of it, and the victims dragged through it; the accounts of jailed demonstrators beaten, humiliated, forced to make fascist salutes...

And I suppress my human impulse to sympathy.

Well, DU,UH! Everyone knows there's only the one and true God:

And everyone knows he always answers every prayer invoving an arrogant head of a state and a heavy model of a cathedral. What's your real name? I'll pray for you.

Whaddaya mean "we"?   Some of us might think that a good punch in the nose could build character in some cases, and make for more civil public discourse in the long run.

I was listening to this on CBC radio tonight, Carol Off or Barbara Budd was interviewing an Italian newswoman about it.  She said the attacker had "mental issues".   And I thought how beautifully poetic it was, that a man with "mental issues"  committed such an act of wanton sanity.

Another story from the "If at first you don't succeed" department:

Police stop man from reaching Berlusconi's hospital room

Quote:

Police are questioning a young man with mental problems who managed to reach the Milan hospital floor where Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi is recovering from an attack.

A Milan anti-terrorism police official said the 26-year-old Turin man was apparently a supporter of Berlusconi who "wanted to pay a visit on the premier at 2 a.m." on Wednesday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak with reporters.

The man was unarmed when he reached the floor of Milan's San Raffaele Hospital where Berlusconi was recovering, the official said. A search of the man's parked car found "hockey sticks and kitchen knives," the official said, but the man apparently plays hockey.

Seems the hockey playing sufficed to explain both the sticks and the kitchen knives.
