"Indigenous delegates have been informed that some States are attempting to strike out all references to UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in the current negotiating text. Indigenous delegates are very concerned of these attempts to remove the protection of indigenous rights in UNFCCC sessions.

They are calling on the States not to go backwards on their obligation in upholding Indigenous Peoples rights, and are demanding that reference to UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples to remain in the final text of Cancun Climate Change agreements."

That link doesn't work, but this one does.

Not that anyone around here gives a damn about Cancun.

It's a great place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there with you.

Cancun Summit - Canada forgotten

Not sure if this has been reported in the English-language media, but the story is basically about the 40-odd countries that were invited to the pre-summit to start negotiations - whereas Canada, which was considered as a Kyoto leader at one time, wasn't invited. Steven Guilbault, ex-head of Greenpeace around here and a well-known environmental activists, condemns Canada's record in recent years of blocking international GHG action and "marginalizing" itself.

Thankfully, thanks does give a damn.

We all have to make sure that Steve's crowd pays for their hubris/stupidity/greed.

Québec's GHG emissions drop below 1990 level - first province to do so

The Kyoto target is 6% below 1990 levels. We only have until 2012 to get there.

Ted Turner urges global one-child policy :

Quote:
The global population is now close to seven billion people, and is expected to rise to 10 billion by 2050, with 80 per cent of that growth coming in developing countries.

Mr. Turner - a long-time advocate of population control - said the environmental stress on the Earth requires radical solutions, suggesting countries should follow China's lead in instituting a one-child policy to reduce global population over time. He added that fertility rights could be sold so that poor people could profit from their decision not to reproduce.

He has five kids himself...not to mention the carbon footprint of a millionaire (billionaire? not sure). Why would such ideas be allowed to be entertained at this conference and why was someone like Ted Turner chosen to speak about them?

Absolutely disgustingly repugnant. The horror of what has happened in China (particularly as it relates to girls) is should be enough to completely disregard any such propositions for any one else.

If Mr. Turner were to seek out assisted suicide, he would probably eliminate the equivalent carbon emissions of hundreds and hundreds of people in the developping world. Interesting that he doesn't consider himself or his kids to be "overpopulating">

December 7 press release:

US and Canadian UN COP16 observers and climate justice activists will demonstrate against their governments' position at the climate change conference by joining the Via Campesina and Espacio Mexicano marches and sit-ins throughout Cancun today, then gather at the Cancun Messe this afternoon at 4pm to deliver a specific message to US & Canadian delegates.

They will join thousands of protestors expected to march through Cancún today as part of the Global Day of Action for Climate Justice. Although the UN negotiations have been kept highly secret, even excluding the majority of credentialed observers, it has become clear that a few powerful countries are manipulating the negotiation process to undermine the second period of the Kyoto Treaty, and deny the hard-fought additions from the Cochabamba Accord that have been integrated into the UN text over the last six months of intense global negotiations on climate change.

Across the planet, people demonstrating for the Global Day of Action for Climate Justice call on governments to oppose the highly controversial REDD, which would ignore the rights of indigenous people who live in forests and does not distinguish between natural forests and reforestation projects. In fact, the only language specifying indigenous human rights has been removed from the draft text. In addition, protestors demand a World Climate Justice Tribunal and restrictions on carbon emissions that would limit global warming to 1%, considered to be the minimum necessary to prevent a recipe for death for small island states and coastal communities. Resulting climate migrants deserve recognition, rights and compensation.

The US & Canadian protesters in Cancún stand behind the Cochabamba Agreement, produced by 140,000 people from 150 countries who gathered in Bolivia for the World People's Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth in April, 2010 after the UN conference change negotiations in Copenhagen failed to produce a binding agreement. Bolivia has entered the negotiations in Cancun with the Cochabamba Agreement as its platform, and is recognized for defending the rights of people across the planet, many of whom feel unrepresented by their own government's negotiators.

US and Canadian protesters specifically denounce their governments' anti-democratic behavior at the negotiations, and call for a strong second period commitment to Kyoto, and the inclusion of the Cochabamba Agreement in the Cancún text.
