The story of Seth Rich receives a body blow:

http://www.businessinsider.com/rod-wheeler-seth-rich-murder-fox-news-lawsuit-2017-8

A longtime Fox News commentator has sued the network, claiming it used him to deflect attention from investigations about the Trump campaign's ties with the Russian government by publishing a "fake news" story about the death of a Democratic National Committee staffer.

Rod Wheeler, who says he has worked as a contributor for Fox News since 2002, claims in the suit that Fox News reporter Malia Zimmerman fabricated quotes from Wheeler with the "knowledge and support" of Ed Butowsky, a wealthy Dallas investor and supporter of President Donald Trump. The lawsuit, which was obtained by Business Insider, also claims that the story garnered the "full ... attention of the White House," including Trump.

The July 2016 fatal shooting of the DNC staffer, Seth Rich, remains under investigation, but it has become the target of numerous right-wing conspiracy theories. In a May 16 article that was later retracted, the quotes attributed to Wheeler suggested that Rich had communicated with WikiLeaks before his death.

In the lawsuit, Wheeler claims that Butowsky sent him a text message telling him Trump had "just read the article" and "wants the article out immediately." The lawsuit included a photo of what Wheeler says is the text message.

Given what we know about Trump and his respect for the truth, this story is perfectly credible.

Sounds like a Trump tweet.

Here is an article written last January by Bruce Schneier. It's long, but if you want to know what a real expert thinks about this question, it's worth a read. He explains the general nature of attack attribution methods, and the trade offs government spy agencies face between revealing enough evidence to convince the public and burning technical and perhaps human resources by doing so. His general conclusion seems to be that the Russians probably did it. He provides plenty of links to the data sources he relies upon.

Bruce Schneier wrote:

The constellation of evidence attributing the attacks against the DNC, and subsequent release of information, is comprehensive. It's possible that there was more than one attack. It's possible that someone not associated with Russia leaked the information to WikiLeaks, although we have no idea where that someone else would have obtained the information. We know that the Russian actors who hacked the DNC -- both the FSB, Russia's principal security agency, and the GRU, Russia's military intelligence unit -- are also attacking other political networks around the world.

Seymour Hersh Cracks 'RussiaGate' as CIA Planted Lie

"We've noted for many months that the DNC emails were leaked by an insider , NOT HACKED BY THE RUSSIANS.  Pulitzer-prize winning investigative reporter Seymour Hersh...said in a recent phone interview linked by WikiLeaks:

[The DC police took Seth Rich's computer, but couldn't get past his password.] So they call the FBI cyber-unit. The Feds get through [the password protection on Rich's computer) and this is what they find. This is according to the FBI report...

What the report says is that - some time in late spring or early summer - he [Rich] makes contact with WikiLeaks. That's in his computer. They [the FBI] find what he [Rich] had done was he submitted a series of documents of emails , of juicy emails - from the DNC..."

Vladimir Putin is far too honest, democratic, and fair minded to ever contemplate swaying a US election to favour Russian interests. What possible benefit could Russia have in swaying an American election??? That's why the US has never interfered in foreign elections! Swaying foreign elections is only the stuff of fake news!

In any case, Donald Trump is far too honest, restrained, and upstanding to ever contemplate receiving aid from a foreign country. What would he have to gain???

Federal investigators exploring whether Donald Trump's campaign colluded with Russian spies have seized on Trump and his associates' financial ties to Russia as one of the most fertile avenues for moving their probe forward, according to people familiar with the investigation.

The web of financial ties could offer a more concrete path toward potential prosecution than the broader and murkier questions of collusion in the 2016 campaign, these sources said.

On the Beach 2017   -   by John Pilger

"I read On The Beach for the first time the other day, finishing it as the US Congress passed a law to wage economic war on Russia, the world's second most lethal nuclear power. There was no justification for this insane vote, except the promise of plunder.

Their main aim seems to be war - real war. No provocation as extreme can suggest anything else.

Those who call themselves liberals or tendentiously 'The left' are eager participants in this manipulation, and its brainwashing, which today revert to one name: Trump.

Pence is horrible on policy, but so is Trump.  But Pence is not a pathologically lying meglomanic, nor is there evidence that he's a crook.  Nor does he surround himself with neo-Nazis and neo-confederates.

From NDPP quoting John Pilger:

Trump has also 'consistently made clear' he wants a new health care plan, a wall with Mexico, and another couple of hundred billion for the Pentagon.

Anyone who bases their analysis on what Trump says is standing in quicksand. Note Trump's flip-flops on China. Note he has surrounded himself with retired military. He can't keep a single thought in his head for longer than 3 minutes.

Yes, the stance of Congress on Russia is a serious problem. Trump is not the solution.

Just a fine bunch of progressives.

The executive director of FACT and the sole paid employee listed on its most recent tax filing is Matt Whitaker, a former U.S. Attorney from Iowa who we here at Right Wing Watch remember from his unsuccessful run for his home state’s Republican Senate nomination in 2014 (it ultimately went to now-Sen. Joni Ernst). When asked at a debate what criteria he would use to determine whether to support or attempt to block President Obama’s federal judicial nominees, Whitaker said that he would ask if nominees are “people of faith” and “have a biblical view of justice.”

“As long as they have that worldview, then they’ll be a good judge,” he said. “And if they have a secular worldview, where this is all we have here on earth, then I’m going to be very concerned about how they judge.”

Bannon going to get the old heave-ho?

Trump suspects Bannon behind WH leaks

President Trump reportedly suspects that his chief strategist Stephen Bannon is behind some White House leaks about fellow staffers, according to a new report by Axios

...According to the report, Trump has been "irritated" with Bannon following a series of Breitbart reports targeting McMaster. Bannon was formerly the executive chairman of Breitbart.

No surprise there. The infighting in the White House continues apace.

Russia-Gate's Evidentiary Void  -  by Robert Parry

Trump supporters are evidently trying furiously to sway public opinion before the legal investigations can present their findings. I think it is very premature to pre-judge the findings of the various legal investigations. I think Trump supporters are nervous because they know that since the new Trump presidency have been such a horror show, negative findings by the investigators could end Trump's presidency.

I think at this point people should be patient and allow the evidence to speak for itself when the legal investigations show us if Trump has acted illegally. In any case, Trump supporters sure seem to be sweating bullets. I guess they are frightened Americans will "lock him up."

Sean in Ottawa

It may be that by running ahead of the evidence the argument against Trump could be damaged if it turned out that the Wikileaks was not sourced in Russia. We know that the FBI claims knowledge of Russian interference, but do they ahve evidence of this particular issue.

Perhaps they do, and I agree we should wait. However, the issue ought not to be decided just on one aspect.

In any case waiting for the evidence is probably not going to be that time-consuming given the pace of events.

In context is the pivot we are seeing from the Trump Administration. It seems they may try to back away from the populist version of Trump and his more overt racism and instead focus on the nasty policies that have wider support in the GOP.  We should not consider it an advantage that the GOP and the President come together to choose the objectionable course that they can agree on to pursue. The White House and the GOP recognize there is a lot of screwing of the people and the environment that they can agree on and will want to focus on that.
