"Libya is not yours. Libya is for the Libyans. The Security Council resolution is invalid because it does not follow the charter regarding the internal affairs of a country. This is terrible oppression, crude aggression.

You never have the right to intervene in our internal affairs. Who gave you the right? You will regret it if you dare to intervene in our country.  Our country is not your country.."   Gaddafi to Sarkozy

" Here is the English transcript of Gaddafi's last will as published by the BBC

'I would like that my family, especially women and children, be treated well after my death. The Libyan people should protect its identity, achievements, history and the honourable image of its ancestors and heroes. The Libyan people should not relinquish the sacrifices of the free and best people.

I call on my supporters to continue the resistance and fight any foreign aggressor against Libya, today, tomorrow and always.

Let the free people of the world know that we could have bargained over and sold out our cause in return for a personal, secure and stable life. We received many offers to this effect but we chose to be at the vanguard of the confrontation as a badge of duty and honor.

Even if we do not win immediately, we will give a lesson to future generations that choosing to protect the nation is an honor and selling out is the greatest betrayal that history will remember forever, despite the attempts of others to tell you otherwise.."

US  And NATO Are Jubilant Over the Spoils of War in Libya

http://www.josemariasison.org/?p=8826

"The US and its imperialist allies in NATO [That's us Canada!] targeted Gaddafi and his regime for complete destruction because he had grievously offended them in the following ways: he called for the nationalization and retraction of the so-called neo-liberal concessions that he had granted to the Western oil companies, he refused to allow the Africa Command (AFRICOM) of the US to establish its central base in Libya, and he pushed a gold-backed dinar as the currency of Africa...

To set up Gaddafi for the kill, the so-called human rights organizations financed by the CIA and National Endowment for Democracy fabricated exaggerated reports which were subsequently played up by the US and other Western mass media depicting him as wantonly killing his political opponents. Such reports became the basis of the UN Security Council resolution allaying the imperialist powers to impose a no-fly zone over Libya and to undertake all necessary measures supposedly to protect civilians.

As soon as the US and its NATO allies got the resolution, they proceeded to attack Libya's military and civilian structures, using their high-tech air power (including jet fighters, cruise missiles, predator drones and helicopter funships) and all sorts of bombs (including oxygen-sucking white phosphorous bombs) in order to cripple and destroy the Gaddafi regime.

The so-called humanitarian intervention to protect civilians was nothing but a deceptive expression for an extremely brutal war of aggression against Libya and the Libyan people. The rebel bands served as baits and guides for aerial attacks and for massacring civilians and wrecking buildings on the ground.

Following the murder and martyrdom of Gaddafi, the US and NATO allies are jubilant over the prospect of collecting the spoils of war. They control the huge amout of Libya's sovereign wealth deposited in various Western banks. They are poised to collect payment in advance for the overstated costs of the bombardment and destruction of Libyan lives and prospects.

They are set to tighten their control over the oil fields, grab the gold resources and privatize the water system of Libya and cash in on contracts for the reconstruction of what they have destroyed. The national traitors that have collaborated with the US and other Western powers in taking over Libya have been in disarray and will continue to be so to the full advantage of their imperialist masters.  Serious contradictions exist among the NTC principal leaders...

Certain factors are bound to keep the situation in Libya volatile and rife for the growth of a national liberation movement. Most important of such factors are the puppet, violent and corrupt character of the new ruling clique, the presistence of many conflicting armed factions, the still significant following of Gaddafi and the certain loss of social benefits as a result of the widespread destruction of the social infrastructure and increased profit-taking of the imperialists.

The people stand to lose such free social services as education, health care, housing and electricity, subsidized car purchases and negligible gasoline costs, all awards for newly-weds, subsidies for farming and so on.."

'We Continue Our Resistance..'

http://rt.com/news/gaddafi-son-address-resistance-513/

'I say go to hell you and NATO behind you. This is our country, we live in it, we die in it and we are continuing the struggle,' Saif al Islam said. "

This is the part that really pisses me off. Did anyone ask the people of Libya if they wanted a constitution drawn up for them that is religious based. I thought this was about he people overturning a despot.  Shouldn't the people be at least consulted before the draft is written.  This is a recipe for the same disaster movie that Iraq and Afghanistan have become. I remember Bush declaring victory in Iraq in 2003.  Deja vue all over again.

One by one the secular govenments of the area are being replaced by Islamic republics. Look to Syria next since they fit the model. Secular, socialist, authoritarian with institutions that are not western style democracies.  I weep for the people next on the regime change agenda.

Iran has a better functioning Islamic republic than Afghanistan, Iraq and even Pakistan.  Maybe they should use its constitution.

The Libyan justice system is off to a great start: 7,000 political prisoners languishing in jail.

Does anyone know of a single progressive measure enacted by the new, improved, "revolutionary" government?

Quote:
The war in Libya is still a failure
By Daniel Larison | The Week – Fri, Oct 21, 2011
....
Instead of protecting the population of Libya — which is what the U.N. authorized — the West's intervention allowed the conflict to continue and consume perhaps as many as 30,000 Libyan lives, including many thousands of civilians, in addition to tens of thousands wounded and hundreds of thousands displaced. Rather than the "limited" war presented by the intervention's defenders, it immediately expanded into a policy of regime change. The official goal of protecting civilians was subordinated very early on to the real purpose of the war — namely, the destruction of the existing government and the elimination of its leaders.

Contrary to the hope that Libya would provide a deterrent to regime violence elsewhere, the political fallout from the war has stalled any international response to Syria's crackdown. By exceeding the U.N. mandate they received in March, the U.S. and its allies have poisoned emerging democratic powers such as India and Brazil against taking any action in other countries. Libya has confirmed every skeptic's worst fears that in practice, the "responsibility to protect" is little more than a pretext for toppling vulnerable governments.

Gaddafi's Rotting Corpse Buried

http://rt.com/news/gaddafi-buried-unknown-location-651/

"The ousted Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was buried at down on Tuesday at a secret location in hte desert. This ends the macabre wrangle over the former leader's rotting corpse, which had been on public display for five days. His son Mutassim and a former aide who were killed by the rebels along with Gaddafi were also buried. The ceremony was attended by four witnesses who swore on the Koran not to reveal the location of the graves.

The three senior members of the topplied regime had been catured alive in the takeover of Gaddafi's hometown Sirte, on Oct. 20, and apparently summarily executed afterwards. The UN Human Rights office has launched an investigation..."

Canada conducted 820 air strikes, some 9% of all NATO strikes. Canada conducted 352 aerial refuelling sorties, some 7% of all NATO refuelling sorties. We conducted 85% of all aerial maritime patrol sorties, some 151 sorties. We dropped 600 laser-guided bombs.

We did our part. We did important work. We are proud of the work done by our soldiers. We are proud of their actions. I would like to personally thank them for their excellent work and I know that all of my colleagues, of all political stripes, join me in thanking them.

Compare this recent NATO + Al-Qa'eda-linked LIFG terrorist manouver in Libya with what they orchestrated in Afghanistan by 1996:

One picture taken shortly after the Taliban takeover says it all: a trembling woman covered in a head to toe veil, her face completely obscured, sobs as she speaks with a Western reporter. Who is she? An impoverished peasant? A homeless woman? No, she's the recently removed chief surgeon at the country's largest hospital!

Gladio Gang pulled the same shit in Central America with bombing hospitals and schools built by international Marxists, political neutrals and Cubans in the 1980s and 90s. It's what the motherfuckers do.

USA and Gladio Gang members  propping-up militant Islam and dozens of terrorist groups in the Middle East and Asia  since the 1950s.

Sirte Massacre Site Is Cleaned Up, Not Investigated

Quote:

In the parched garden of the Mahari Hotel, volunteers on Monday scrubbed signs of a recent massacre. They collected dozens of bodies, apparently of people executed on the hotel grounds several days ago, but left other evidence behind, like the plastic ties that were used to bind the hands of victims and shell casings, scattered on the dead grass in patches of blood.

The volunteers said the victims included at least two former Qaddafi government officials, local loyalist fighters and maybe civilians. The killers, they believed, were former rebel fighters, belonging to anti-Qaddafi units that had used the hotel as a base in recent weeks. It appeared to be one of the worst massacres of the eight-month conflict, but days after it occurred, no one from Libya’s new government had come to investigate.

Al Jazeera wrote:
NATO should stay involved in Libya until the end of this year to help prevent loyalists of Muammar Gaddafi from leaving the country, Mustafa Abdel Jalil, the interim leader, has said....

Qatar was one of the first countries to recognise the NTC as the legitimate authority in Libya and supplied the anti-Gaddafi forces with water, weapons and more than $400m in aid.

On Wednesday, Qatar revealed that hundreds of its soldiers had joined Libyan rebel forces on the ground as they battled Gaddafi troops, the AFP news agency reported.

The announcement marks the first time that the Gulf state has acknowledged it had military boots on the ground in Libya.

"We were among them and the numbers of Qataris on the ground were hundreds in every region," said Major General Hamad bin Ali Al-Atiya, the Qatari military's chief of staff.

...which explains a lot about al Jazeera's coverage of the war on Libya.

The Butchering of Gaddafi is America's Crime  -  by Glen Ford

http://blackagendareport.com/content/butchering-gaddafi-america%E2%80%99...

"Last week the whole world saw, and every decent soul recoiled, at the true face of NATO's answer to the Arab Spring. An elderly, helpless prisoner, struggled to maintain his dignity in a screaming swirl of savages, one of whom thrusts a knife up his rectum. These are [Canada's,] Europe and America's jihadis in the flesh.

In a few minutes of joyously recorded bestiality, the rabid pack undid every carefully packaged image of NATO's 'humanitarian' project in North Africa - a horror and revelation indelibly imprinted on the global consciousness by the brutes' own cell phones.

The saner sections of America's psychological operations machinery - including their collaborators in the corporate media - were doubtless as horrified as anyone at the Libya jihadis' insistence on revealing so graphically to the entire planet the barbaric character of the 'revolution'..."

Apparently, this was lost on our own pols, whose own RCAF Lt General Charles Bouchard, as NATO's Libya commander, was ultimately responsible for all tactical targeting - including  ordering the attack on Gaddafi's convoy apparently flying white flags at the time... The title of the piece could therefore as easily have been 'Butchering Gaddafi Canada's Crime', since it was a Canadian general who did much of the 'heavy lifting' to facilitate it. And how many public protests thus far against this here? An astounding and very revealing wilful blindness. And are  we still to be expected to vote NDP after their awful complicity...?

"The International Criminal Court is due to receive a suit against NATO over the killing of Libyan ex-leader Muammar Gaddafi. But the Gaddafi family's chances of finding justice in the Hague are all too slim, says journalist James Corbett. Sirte is now a desolate place, with small communities scattered across the city. The homes which have not been destroyed have been looted, according to local people, by rebel fighters.

Canada to Wind Down Libyan Mission After Gaddafi's Death

http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2011/10/20/gaddafi-death-harper-libya-mission_n_1023154.html

"The commander of NATO operations in Libya is Canadian Lt. Gen Charles Bouchard, who oversaaw the coalition from a NATO base in Italy. Canadian fighter jets flew 10 percent of NATO's sorties on Libya, supporting the rebels who has toppled Gadhafi's regime in August and forced him into hiding. Their UN-sanctioned mission was to protect innocent civilians from forces loyal to the dictator.Canada's commitment to the mission, which also includes a navy warship and surveillance planes, was due to end in December.

'Gen. Bouchard has served our country with great distinction,' Harper said after speaking with him by telephone. 'Our government shall be speaking with our allies to prepare for the end of the military mission in the next few days.' A spokesman for defence Minister Peter MacKay said Canadian Forces assets were not involved in airstrikes in Gadhafi's hometown on Thursday morning."

Unless you count RCAF Lt. Gen Charles Bouchard, NATO Commander, Operation 'Unified Protector' as an obvious 'CF asset'. Bouchard had final approval authority on all targeting  in Libya.

When Bouchard heads back to Canada, it will be to retirement. He's 'done and frankly mentally exhausted. It'll be nice to go home and stop thinking about it. I've been in the military for 37 1/2 years, a career that has gone way beyond anything I could have imagined. I've had a very good run."

'The important event was the fall of Tripoli, bombarded and captured by NATO - undoubtedly the worst warcrime of the century - followed by the penetration of the Misrata tribe to control the capital. In the weeks that preceded the Battle of Tripoli, the overwhelming majority of Libyans took part, Friday after Friday, in anti-NATO, anti-NTC and pro-Gadhafi rallies. Now their country is destroyed and they are governed by NATO and its NTC puppets..' - Thierry Meyssan

NATO Settles Down in Libya  -  by MK Bhadrakumar

More likely the media simply reported events, and NATO watched/read the news to glean information from it.

An important contribution to the assessment of the war on Libya by Hugh Roberts, in the London Review of Books:

[excerpt - with emphasis added]

Quote:
Many critics of Nato’s intervention have complained that it departed from the terms of Resolution 1973 and was for that reason illegal; that the resolution authorised neither regime change nor the introduction of troops on the ground. This is a misreading. Article 4 ruled out the introduction of an occupying force. But Article 42 of the 1907 Hague Regulations states that ‘territory is considered occupied when it is actually placed under the authority of the hostile army,’ a definition conserved by the 1949 Geneva Conventions. What Resolution 1973 ruled out was the introduction of a force intended to take full political and legal responsibility for the place, but that was never the intention; ground forces were indeed eventually introduced, but they have at no point accepted political or legal responsibility for anything and so fall short of the conventional definition of an occupying force. It may be that this misreading of the resolution was connived at by the governments that drafted it in order to secure the best (or least bad) tally of votes in favour on 17 March; this would of course be only one instance of the sophistry to which the metteurs en scène of intervention have resorted. And regime change was tacitly covered by the phrase ‘all necessary measures’. That this was the right way to read the resolution had already been made clear by the stentorian rhetoric of Cameron and Hague, Sarkozy and Juppé, and Obama and Clinton in advance of the Security Council vote. Since the issue was defined from the outset as protecting civilians from Gaddafi’s murderous onslaught ‘on his own people’, it followed that effective protection required the elimination of the threat, which was Gaddafi himself for as long as he was in power (subsequently revised to ‘for as long as he is in Libya’ before finally becoming ‘for as long as he is alive’). From the attitudes struck by the Western powers in the run-up to the Security Council debate, it was evident that the cleverly drafted resolution tacitly authorised a war to effect regime change. Those who subsequently said that they did not know that regime change had been authorised either did not understand the logic of events or were pretending to misunderstand in order to excuse their failure to oppose it. By inserting ‘all necessary measures’ into the resolution, London, Paris and Washington licensed themselves, with Nato as their proxy, to do whatever they wanted whenever they wanted in the full knowledge that they would never be held to account, since as permanent veto-holding members of the Security Council they are above all laws.

NATO'S Law of the Jungle in Libya  -  by Peter Dyer

http://consortiumnews.com/2011/11/11/natos-law-of-the-jungle-in-libya/

"If there is one thing the 'humanitarian' intervention in Libya as convincingly demonstrated it is this: the only real international law is the law of brute force...

As US Rep Dennis Kucinich, D Ohio said: 'NATO's top commanders may have acted under color of international law but they are not exempt from international law. If members of the Gaddafi regime are to be held accountable, NATO's top commanders must also be held accountable through the ICC for all civilian deaths resulting from bombing. Otherwise we will have witnessed [and made no effort to stop!] the triumph of a new international gangsterism."

Terror and Revenge Engulf NATO's Libya  -  by Franklin Lamb

http://www.counterpunch.org/2011/11/11/terror-and-revenge-engulfs-natos-...

"The 'New Libya' has entered its own 'Terror' which is spreading inexorably, aided by NATO member states including American, French and British SAS units known locally as 'disappearance squads'. This is one of thle rapidly developing consequences of the UN's rush to 'protect Libya's civilian population' last spring...

It is clear that the current period is cascading into paroxysmal revenge attacks and political cleansing..."

this must be what is meant when our pols refer to Canada's 'heavy-lifting in Libya'...other than that, of course, their continuing silence on this joint criminal enterprise tells you everything you need to know about their own complicity. Don't be surprised either if JTF2's name pops up at some point as involved with the activities of the 'disappearance squads' mentioned above...

So which NDP MP's will stand shoulder to shoulder with the Conservatives and commend our brave RCAF Condor Squad for dropping thousands of bombs on cities still inhabited by civilians.  Maybe all the leadership candidates can come together and jointly praise the bravest our society has to offer.

It's such a disgusting celebration one hardly knows where to begin...they have totally destroyed a country's excellent infrastructure, murdered its head of state, and many of its people, blindly stolen the resources, installed brutal puppets as leaders...and we're going to 'honour' the warcriminals while NOT ONE OF OUR'REPRESENTATIVES'  expresses a word of criticism.

yet many here support them and urge that all do as they. Always the same reason: 'the others are worse'.

It made me nauseous to hear this news. The government didn't even dare do anything like this with Afghanistan, which they have declared as official over or won.

The damage done in Libya and Iraq, two countries that had solid infrastructure and services that rivaled their regional neighbours, is disgusting. all those lives lost to for regime change just  underscores how depraved these military interventions were.

I heartily agree LL: Here's part of the problem

Midweek Bleat: The UN is Merely a Zombie to the US

http://www.thenewage.co.za/blogdetail.aspx?mid=186&blog_id=1578

"...There is an urgent need at this time to question the relevance of the United Nations as a platform to bring peace in the world. If the world body can so blatantly flout its own decisions as it did in the case of Resolution 1973 over the enforcement of a no-fly zone in Libya, can it be trusted as a peacemaker?

It is my fervent view that the Libyan situation has exposed for all to see how this body is no longer relevant as a mediator on behalf of vulnerable nations.

The question is, can the UN be made to account for the 50,000 plus deaths because of the war led by [a Canadian led] NATO? This is a urgent task for the body has become the zombie of the US and its allies."

The same could be asked/said of Canada's parliament..

This may be so, but in principle Qaddafi should not be sent to the ICC. His crimes, if any, are a domestic matter and the ICC should keep its fucking imperialist nose out of the case. Every time someone is extradited to the ICC to face charges that have nothing to do with international law, the illegitimate ICC is given de facto wider jurisdiction to interfere in internal affairs of countries.

Until the ICC is prepared to try the real international criminals, we should oppose any attepts to confer legitimacy upon it.

Forget about creating jobs in Canada but help corporations rake in the $$$ from reconstruction and resource exploitation contracts in war torn countries. Canada probably doesn't even collect much taxes on those chunks of change.

As primarily the figleaf for Western interests and "justice", do not expect the ICC to press the case. as they know any unlikely co-operation with Libya on this issue could highlight other embarrassing questions for the parties involved.

Especially, the NTC's increasingly close relations with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir,  wanted by the ICC for genocide in Darfur:

Quote:
Omar al-Bashir and Chairman of Libya's ruling ...(NTC) Mustafa Abdul-Jalil on Friday held joint talks in Khartoum, which focused on bilateral ties and issues of mutual concern....
[al-Bashir]: "It has been agreed on the establishment of a real integration between Sudan and Libya....

Africa Lies Naked and Exposed to Euro-American Military Offensive  -  by Glen Ford

http://indigenist.blogspot.com/2011/12/africa-lies-naked-to-euro-america...

"The prospect of an Arab Spring at the dawn of 2011 sparked a general hysteria in imperial capitals. With centuries of Euro-American domination flashing before their eyes, Washington, London and Paris quickly configured NATO to unleash SHock and Awe on the victim of choice in North Africa, Muammar Gaddafi. The momentum of that show of force has led on expanding cast of imperial actors to the gates of Damascus.

But Africa is the most vulnerable region in America's warpath, a continent ripe for the plucking due to the multitudinous entanglements of Africa's political and military classes with imperialism. The actual truth is the United Sates and its allies, principally the French, are positioned to 'take' much of the continent with the collaboration of most of its govenrments and especially its soldiers.

As the US bullies the way southward in the wake of the seizure of Libya its path has been smoothed by the AFricans themselves..."
