Britain And Allies [Canada] Used WMD in Libya
http://www.presstv.ir/detail/214155.html
"What we...did not understand was the fact that the final outcome had nothing to do with saving lives but rather to get their hands on Libya's vast, lucrative natural resources. The entire campaign became a total blood bath that would leave over 50,000 dead and many, many thousands of innocent Libyan civilians would become contaminated with radiation from the weapons used by the coalition forces.
The active use of Weapons of Mass Destrution (WMD0 has basically killed the genetics of Libya, adjacent countries and the world beyond by its over excessive use of depleted uranium (DU) weapons..."

Depleted Uranium - UN Resolutions:
The Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities,
Guided by the principles of the Charter of the United Nations, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenants on Human Rights and the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949 and the Additional Protocols thereto,
Recalling General Assembly resolutions 42/99 of 7 December 1987 and 43/111 of 8 December 1988 reaffirming that all people have an inherent right to life,
Concerned at the alleged use of weapons of mass or indiscriminate destruction both against members of the armed forces and against civilian populations, resulting in death, misery and disability,
Concerned also at repeated reports on the long-term consequences of the use of such weapons upon human life and health and upon the environment,
Concerned further that the physical effects on the environment, the debris from the use of such weapons, either alone or in combination, and abandoned contaminated equipment constitute a serious danger to life,
Convinced that the production, sale and use of such weapons are incompatible with international human rights and humanitarian law,
Believing that continued efforts must be undertaken to sensitize public opinion to the inhuman and indiscriminate effects of such weapons and to the need for their complete elimination,
Convinced that the production, sale and use of such weapons are incompatible with the promotion and maintenance of international peace and security,
1. Urges all States to be guided in their national policies by the need to curb the production and the spread of weapons of mass destruction or with indiscriminate effect, in particular nuclear weapons, chemical weapons, fuel-air bombs, napalm, cluster bombs, biological weaponry and weaponry containing depleted uranium;

New Libya: Guns Go Silent But Future Elusive(and vid)

"...we had free education and healthcare under Gaddafi. Of course we expect it to remain free, but it also needs to be improved. The new authorities also have to decrease prices and raise salaries so that ordinary people can enjoy all the benefits of the revolution..'
Yet exactly how the new government can afford to do so in a country ruined by war and stripped of much of its budgetary income is anybody's guess. The 42 years of Gaddafi's rule taught Libyans to rely on their government for just about everything, and the level of expectations on the new authorities is very high.."

The CF never used those missiles. They were carried but never fired.

What Canadian weapons systems do use DU? We don't have, um, A-10s or gunships or whatever do we? And do you have an opinion on DU in terms of hazardous material status?
Hey Merowe. The CF doesn't use DU weapons. There are systems with DU in them and only used as a counterweight. For example the CT114, the plane the Snowbirds fly, uses DU counterweights in the rudder and elevator.
From what I've read it's nasty stuff, both short term and long term. It's main use in weapons is as a penetrator in tank shells, so that's the short term. The long term comes from breathing in the dust. Gulf War Syndrome is thought to originate in part from exposure to DU. Then it gets into the food chain and contaminates the people living in the area, so it's similar to Fukushima.
It's real bad. This will get you started:

The argument about not owning or using stockpiles of DU munitions can't be described as valid one if it is being put forward as a claim to some highground, especially in an alliance where the 'burdens' are shared, and where we reap the tactical benefits as partners of those who do employ them.
I agree. Canada soiled themselves in a serious warcrime in Libya and the whole world knows it. As usual it's only some of the locals who don't...

Not just our partners but everyone else.
Canada's military doesn't use DU weapons, nuclear weapons, chemical weapons, land mines, biological weapons, dum dum rounds, white phosphorus, or exotics (sonic, microwave, etc). All of the above are used (or at least owned) by various NATO nations as well as Russia, Israel, Pakistan, China, India, North Korea, and others.
I agree. Canada soiled themselves in a serious warcrime in Libya and the whole world knows it. As usual it's only some of the locals who don't...
There were no war crimes committed by Canada in Libya. From my vantage point any claims of Libyan war crimes should be directed towards Gadhafi.

A Capital Transforms, for Better and for Worse
Tripoli is a vibrant city of nearly two million people with a bustling port, and it is graced by Roman ruins and old fortification walls built by the Ottomans and other conquerors. But while it has gone through other abrupt changes over the centuries, what is happening these days was unthinkable only weeks ago when Colonel Qaddafi tried to control even the smallest details of daily life.
Tinted windows were prohibited on cars; now, drivers everywhere are pasting dark green tinted plastic on their windows to keep out the searing sun but also as a sign of their new liberty. Fruit and vegetable vendors were restricted from selling their wares on most streets; now, throngs of them are out selling bananas and oranges beneath highway overpasses and on the sides of traffic circles, helping them feed their families but also worsening congestion.

Harper has no boys apparently.
Well that does it! I can't vote for a party that voted for a no-fly zone, either. Better keep the troops in the Stan another 10 years, or whenever Uncle Sam instructs our Libertories to remove them. A pair of proven vicious toadie parties in-hand is certainly worth more than one no-fly zone at a time when Gadaffi announced to the world that he ordered his military to show no mercy for Libyans. And even though the Socialist International refused to back Gadaffi themselves.
Better safe than sorry I suppose. Good call.
Any 'Socialist International' that would have the NDP as a member is more International Socialist than Socialist International in any case - hardly a credible citation. Didn't they attempt to pitch/ditch the last vestiges of their 'socialism' last convention? Just like they previously ditched their anti-NATO position? NDP=No Difference Party. And the closer they get to power the more obvious it will be too...you have a better chance of winning with Lotto max. Sorry Fidelio no sale...
Mandela's ANC, Mexico's Democratic Revolution, Fatah, Puerto Rican Independence Party etc. You just spit on very many socialists around the world in defence of a former leader who was never one himself.
The problem with socialist movements today is that they are still under siege by capitalists and the international banking cabal. Socialists in very many countries have found that operating sovereign countries independently of marauding interanational capital is too difficult to manage on their own. The whole notion of socialism in one country has been found wanting since the former USSR and Yugoslavia succumbed to decades of relentless trade embargos and vicious dirty wars. Vietnamese communists were forced down the capital road by the late 1990s. These were not democratic decisions by the people so much as they were "forced errors" by leftist leaders with few choices. Medieval sieges, military threats and political interference by the west and its powerful multinational corporations still occurs today in this time of colder war.
Moamar Gaddafi co-operated with the CIA on torture. He was no socialist. He was an Arab nationalist. And like some people we know, the imperialist CIA, MI6, DGSE etc have generally never discerned or discriminated between the two very different political movements when breaking international laws to subvert and undermine both. They say that when you swim with sharks and piranhas, chances are you'll be bitten. Lesson learned: If you play with the Gladio mafia, the demands made of you and payoffs eventually become too difficult to manage.
And we know you'll still promote the NDP as usual.
I never said Gaddafi was a socialist. I said the NDP isn't.
Au contraire.

I appreciate these links that NDPP provides us. I'm sceptical of Thierry Meysan though. He's behind (two bestsellers) the idea that an airliner did'nt hit the Pentagon. Is he a CIA agent (agent provocateur) ? To completely discredit the humanitarian (Responsibilty to Protect) motives behind Sarkozy and NATO's intervention in Libya is to accuse Bob Ray, Lloyd Axworthy, the NDP etc. of naivity or insincerity. They and others are left-leaning true believers, like Wilson and Roosevelt and often finally instrumental in deciding to go to war. "Intervention" is as Canadian as maple syrup which is why I hope someday a non-interventionist (isolationist) Republican may become Emperor.
Well, I completely discredit the humanitarian motives behind Sarkozy et al's latest transgressions. Completely.
As for Rae, Axworthy etc. naive AND insincere, my guess. Sorry 'bout that. I'm a touch sentimental about Mr.Axworthy, too, not a bad egg I thought. But wrt R2P I have one word: 'Congo'.

Minister Baird pointed to the partnership between Qatar and Canada in the liberation operation, which, he said, was important and essential...
Speaking to the Qatari daily (al Sharq) the Canadian Foreign Minister believed that Canada and Qatar played a major role in terms of the military involvement, noting that the Qatari role is not only recognized for its military contribution but rather for its political and diplomatic contribution to the liberation.
Concerning the situation in Syria, Baird hailed the Arab League's distinguished and extraordinary role to resolve the Syrian crisis. He said that the United Nations had failed to deal with the Syrian crisis and denounced the failure of the Security Council to make any move towards the situation so far."

But the international body carefully ignored its own obvious role in creating the tragedy...Almost incredibly, the UN and some of its member governments are now asking for ever more international intervention. To deal with the fallout crisis created by the previous round of failed interventions.."
These are not unintended consequences at all. Deliberately designed to lead to more intervention. And NATO and AFRICOM are ready to 'help' again..

Torture in Libya: The Ugly Reality of Imperialist 'Liberation'
http://www.wsws.org/articles/2012/feb2012/pers-f01.shtml
"A criminal imperialist war that ended with a brutal murder, has, unsurprisingly, yielded a regime of terror, torture and repression. According to a report released by Amnesty International (AI) 'torture is being carried out by officially recognized military and security entities as well as by a multitude of armed militias operating outside of any legal framework.'
Prisoners are 'suspended in contorted positions, beaten for hours with whips, cables, plastic hoses, metal chains, bars, wooden sticks, and given electric shocks with live wires and taser-like electro-shock weapons,' according to the Amnesty report. A spokesperson for the organization described the failure of the [Canada], US and NATO-backed National Transitional Council to conduct any investigation, much less take any action against the torture, as 'horrifying'.
All of these developments have been studiously ignored by the coterie of 'left' organizations, liberal academics and journalists who played such a critical role in promoting and justifying the US-NATO war for regime change in Libya. Pseudo-left groups ranging from the New Anti-Capitalist Party in France to the Left Party in Germany, [the NDP] and the International Socialists Organization in the US all provided a critical service to imperialism by supporting the pro-imperialist 'rebel' leaders and helping to dress up a naked intervention for oil and geo-strategic interests , as a crusade to protect civilians and promote democracy and human rights..."

Refugee Camp Massacre: Libyan Militia Launch Racist Raid

"Heavily armed fighters have attacked a camp of about 1,500 refugees on the outskirts of Tripoli, opening fire on its inhabitants. At least six were killed in the incident, raising fears that civilians have little protection from militias running amok. According to various reports between six and twelve people were killed, including children, women and the elderly.
The area around the camp was cut off by the attackers to prevent any help reaching the refugees. 'Men from Misrata came to the camp in Janzour district at 10 o'clock Monday. We knew they were from Misrata because it was written all over the cars, camp resident Huda Bel-Eid said at Tripoli Medical Hospital, Al Jazeera reports.."

"Libya's racist, NATO mercenaries have expelled the honourable ambassador of Niger in Tripoli because his government accepted Saadi Gaddafi, whose only crime has been a recent call to Al Arabiya TV in which he warned of an uprising in Libya..."
At least 12 detainees had died since September after torture, Amnesty said. "Their bodies were covered in bruises, wounds and cuts and some had had nails pulled off," the group said.
The report is a fresh blow to Libya's new government, the National Transitional Council, which helped lead the anti-Gaddafi uprising that broke out one year ago this week and spiraled into a brutal, eight-month civil war.
Since the war's end with the capture and killing of Gaddafi last October, the NTC has struggled to extend its control over the nation. It has largely failed to rein in the hundreds of brigades that fought in the war, many of which now run their own detention centres for those accused of links to Gaddafi's regime.
Amnesty said it visited 11 detention camps in central and western Libya in January and February, and found evidence of torture and abuse at all but one.

One Year Later, Libya's Future Still Very Much in the Air - by David Pugliese
http://www.montrealgazette.com/news/year+later+Libya+future+still+very+m...
"Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird beamed with pride last summer as he signed a Canadian bomb that would soon be dropped on Libya. 'Free Libya. Democracy', he wrote.
Canada, he pointed out, was at the forefront of the NATO mission in Libya. In Gadhafi's place would come democracy, the rebels had assured Baird. 'I can honestly say their courage and their resolve are remarkable,' he wrote in the Ottawa Citizen in July.
Defence and political analysts, media commentators and newspaper editorialists have portrayed Canada's military intervention in Libya as a great victory. Canadian Lt Gen Charles Bouchard, who led the NATO mission, has been hailed as a hero.
But almost a year after Canada went to war to bring what it called freedom and democracy to Libya, the African nation is in a state of turmoil.
A poll taken for the Defence Department during the war would later show that Canadians strongly approved of the government's decision to intervene in Libya. Some in the Canadian Forces, however, don't subscribe to the argument...They say it all came down to relations with the US. Once Canada's closest ally had decided to intervene, the Canadian government agreed to go to war."
Thanks for that link to Pugliese's very important article. I like the way he summarizes how Qaddafi was until very recently our pal:
In April 2009, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warmly greeted one of the colonel's sons during high-level talks in Washington. "We deeply value the relationship between the United States and Libya," she said.
Less than three months later, Gadhafi himself was shaking hands with U.S. President Barack Obama during a G8 summit in Italy.
Canada also moved to get in on the action. But it already had a head start since Canadian companies had a long history of involvement in Libya, even when Gadhafi was considered an international pariah. Although former diplomats would try to downplay the extent of the relationship once the war against Libya began, an estimated 70 Canadian firms were active in the country, mainly in gas and oil production.
In the late 1980s, Canadian firms, with the backing of the Conservative government, pursued Libyan contracts. In 1989, Calgary-based Husky Oil and its partners spent nearly $100 million, entering into exploration and production-sharing agreements.
In December 2004, then Liberal prime minister Paul Martin headed a delegation to visit Gadhafi and improve trade.
By early 2011, Suncor Energy of Calgary had almost $1 billion in assets tied up in Libya and the Quebec engineering firm SNC Lavalin had won contracts valued at more than $800 million. SNC, with 2,000 employees in the country, was building a massive pipeline that Gadhafi envisioned would bring water in the south across the desert to cities in the north. It had also been awarded a contract to build a new airport in Benghazi and a $275-million prison in Tripoli.
Stephen Harper's Conservative government also forged links with the Libyan strongman. In 2008 the government asked for — and received — the Libyan leader's help in freeing kidnapped Canadian diplomats Robert Fowler and Louis Guay, who had been kidnapped by al-Qaida's affiliate in northwest Africa. During a trip to Libya the next year, then-Foreign Affairs minister Lawrence Cannon thanked the Gadhafi regime for using its extensive intelligence network and connections on the abduction case.
Canada Helped NATO Enable Ouster of Gadhafi From Libya - by David Pugliese

"...It was May of 2011, three months into Libya's civil war, and NATO had set up a ring of 20 warships to enforce a UN arms embargo. The Libyan rebels guarding their ship openly acknowledged they were delivering weapons to their forces in Misrata. HMCS Charlottetown's commander, Craig Skjerpen radioed NATO headquarters for instructions.
The response was swift: let the ship sail on so the crew could deliver their deadly cargo. A NATO senior officer had boasted just weeks earlier that the alliance's blockade HAD closed the door on the flow of arms inside Libya..."
War on Libya Continues on Several Fronts - by David Pugliese
http://www.ottawacitizen.com/news/Libya+continues+several+fronts/6178586...
"The death of Libya leader Moammar Gadhafi on October 20 was greeted with relief in the capital cities of NATO nations. His demise meant the war was all but over. In Ottawa officials in the Prime Minister's office and the Privy Council Office went to work planning the largest military victory parade the country had seen in decades...
The emphasis was on portraying those who had taken part in the Libya mission - from cooks to clerks to pilots and aircrew - as 'heroes'.."
A charming new addition to the axis of homophobia and misogyny (the Vatican + fundamentalist Islamic régimes + the U.S. + some African states): the Libyan delegation to the U.N. Human Rights Commission in Geneva has declared that homosexuality is a threat to mankind and must be combatted as such.
There you have it, all you cheerleaders for "humanitarian intervention". Moreover, I'm sure that Al-CIAda would joyfully fuck all good liberals up the *** with an AK47 to show full appreciation for their international support for the "liberation" struggle in Libya.
More choice quotes from Pugliese's very useful trilogy of articles:
The Aeryon Scout Micro-Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, designed and built in Waterloo, was a small spy drone that fit inside a suitcase.
The Canadian government put Aeryon in contact with the rebel's National Transitional Council, while Zariba Security Corp., a private security firm in Ottawa, was to make the delivery. In July, the $100,000 drone was delivered to the rebels by Charles Barlow, president of Zariba and a former Canadian Forces officer. He took an 18-hour boat ride from Malta to the NTC training facility in Misrata, sailing without problems through NATO's blockade.
Barlow showed the rebels how to fly the drone, using it to identify a Libyan military position, and left shortly after.
One investigation by the New York Times found that NATO bombs killed as many as 70 civilians during the conflict, including 29 women and children. Survivors told the Times that one tactic used by NATO was to restrike targets minutes after the first attack, a practice that killed civilians rushing to aid the wounded.

"...My colleague, David Josue and I had been in Libya to attend a conference for Africans on the continent as well as Africans in the diaspora. And what the Jamahariya government had devised was a call to Africans in the diaspora who were unhappy with their treatment at the hands of white Americans or white Europeans, etc. - to come back home to Africa and to help Libya rebuild Africa and rebuild itself.
That was the purpose of this conference I had attended...And it was at that conference that the Jamahiriya committed 90 billion dollars to help in the creation of the United States of Africa..That would also include a million-person army for continental Africa to drive back the attempts of AFRICOM and others to occupy the African continent.
That was in addition to the proposal for a gold-backed dinar for all of Africa..The daughter of Kwame Nkruma was at that conference, the son of Patrice Lumumba was at that conference, the grandson of Malcom X was there...The atmosphere was electric with the idea of the re-building, the re-kindling of the movement that these African leaders - or their forbears - represented. Well that was all put to an end by NATO's bombing...
The attack on Libya was an attack on Africa! It was an attack on my aspirations as a person of African descent to have a free and independent Africa. That's what was attacked!..."
As Calls For Intervention in Syria Grow, Vijay Prashad Urges Re-Evaluation of NATO Attack on Libya
video
Libya has just marked the first anniversary of the start of the uprising that toppled Col. Muammar Gaddafi’s four-decade rule. But as Libya celebrates a new era free of the Gaddafi regime, there are growing concerns the country’s lingering divisions will tear it apart. Libya remains deeply splintered by regions and factions. More than 500 militias exist throughout the country, leading to ongoing human rights abuses that resemble those under the Gaddafi regime. We speak to Trinity College Professor Vijay Prashad. “There is a serious need to evaluate what has happened in Libya as a result, not only of the Gaddafi atrocities of the rise of the rebellion, but also significantly of the nature of the NATO intervention. And that evaluation has not happened,” Prashad said. “I’m afraid that is really calling into question the use of human rights as a lubricant for intervention. If we can’t go back and evaluate what has happened, I think a lot of people around the world are afraid of going forward into another intervention where the lessons of Libya have not been learned.”

The plan seeks to revive the pre-Gadhafi system in place from 1951 until 1963, when Libya was ruled by a monarchy and was divided into three states: Tripolitania in the west, Fezzan in the southwest and Cyrenaica in the east, or Barqa, as it was called in Arabic."

Russia Blasts NATO Over Libya - And Libya Over Syria (and vid)

"Russia says that NATO should apologize for causing civilian casualties during the air raids in Libya in 2011 and pay compensation. Moscoaw has also accused Libya's new government of training Syrian rebels and instigating terrorism. Russia's UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin issued his sharp criticism while speaking at Wednesday's meeting of the UN Security Council - 'We expect NATO to acknowledge that its air raids caused civilians casualties, to apologize and say it is prepared to pay the appropriate compensation,' Churkin asserted.
At the same meeting, Russia's UN envoy expressed Moscow's concern about the uncontrolled proliferation of Libyan arms in the region. However, it was not just the weapons that were being exported he said. 'We have receieved information that Libya, with support from the authorities, there is a special training center for the Syrian revolutionaries and that people are sent to Syria to attack the legal government,' Vitaly Churkin said.
'We think Al Qaeda is in Syria and therefore the question arises: Is transporting the revolution not turning into the transporting of terrorism?'
I see what you mean in there being no difference.
Yes if the NDP had voted against the UN sanctioned no-fly zone over Libya, things would be totally different today. We can be sure that Abdelhakim Belhadj, Al-CIA'duh's commandante in Tripoli, would not be there in Turkey and launching raids into Syria on behalf of his western backers today. What planet is Ms Laverdiere from? Her political IQ doesn't sound too sound.
Oh it's in all the newspapers how "the rebels" won in Libya, and now Libyans will be thanking us soon for handing them the keys to democracy. It was a non-issue before it even got started. The Gladio Gang have sinced moved on to laying medieval siege to Iran and Syria. It's sometimes difficult to keep up with grand chess board maneuvers these days.
And the NDP simply says ya whatever corporate newz, because we're focused on bringing down the Harpers in 2015 if they don't achieve that end themselves between now and then.
@JW: I imagine she learned her stuff from a career at Foreign Affairs Canada. Her statement is the official NATO line on the fascists' butchery of Libya. How people can think there is any future supporting these evil sellouts is beyond me. You're right though, aside from everything else, the NDP are dangerous political dumbos. Sorry, I actually didn't read you defending the imperialists against their probable participation in an inside job on 9/11. I naturally assumed that you would have empathy(as opposed to sympathizing with) imperialists on that issue, like you did several years ago in other threads when insisting that it was the Afghan people themselves who kicked-out the evol Sovs with help from no one in particular and exspeshully not the CIA or their Saudi prince friends at the time. Because I would never accuse you of siding with imperialists or their friendly military dictatorships in 1980s-90s Central Asia. Not never.
And so for the sake of political expediency let us return now to criticizing the NDP for their dark alliance with imperialism. RIP General Zia and Elvis bin Laden, Charlie Wilson, the CIA etc. We shall deny them thrice before the cows come home and have to listen to that tone-deaf rooster again.

Just another day in NATO's 'Free' Libya - I wonder if any MP who voted to bomb bothers checking into what NATO R2P did to the country, or reflects upon their role in this joint criminal enterprise? And if you found these effects to be the destruction of this country, would you and your fellow MPs not be raising serious questions? These ghouls have said nothing since. Appalling.
