'A National Strategy for Dangerous Times':  Vimy Paper 2012 : The Strategic Outlook for Canada

http://cda-cdai.ca/cdai/vimy-papers/vimypaper2012

"We're living in a different world than the one which produced most of our thinking about how to preserve international peace and security,' said Paul Chapin, a former senior Foreign Affairs official and one of the principal co-authors of the study. 'It's time for a comprehensive review of the strategic landscape, what the dangers are out there for Canadians and what to do about them.'

"The Vimy Paper is also informed by a veritable Canadian 'who's who' of the defence and security community, including two former Chiefs of the Defence Staff, a former Chairman of NATO's Military Committee, a retired Ambassador, a Senator, eminent historians and academics as well as NATO field commanders, strategists and experienced military staff officers."

"Among the major recommendations of the report:

'Canada's national interests are at stake when ruthless regimes are striving to get their hands on nuclear weapons; when allies and trading partners cannot reign in their sovereign debt; and when radicals employ subterfuge, coercion and violence to advance ideologies contrary to the most fundamental beliefs of Canadians...'

NATO, G8 In Chicago: Adbusters Puts Out Call for 50,000 To Protest (and vid)

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/27/nato-g8-in-chicago-adbust_n_123...

"In a tactical briefing posted Wednesday, the magazine calls on protesters 'from all over the world to flock to Chicago, set up tents, kitches, peaceful barricades adn OCCUPY CHICAGO for a month,' beginning in May. Earlier this month, the Chicago City Council overwhelmingly approved two ordinances Mayor Rahm Emanuel introduced to crack down on expected NATO and G8 protesters via stricter rules for parade organizers, increased fines for resisting arrest adn a green light for the mayour's blanket spending authority for the summit's going forward.."

Is Adbusters also going to point out to people "flocking" from all over the world to Chicago to protest that if they are non-citizens of the United States they have zero civil rights or protection of the U.S. constitution; that they can be arrested and subjected to indefinite preventive detention, torture, and/or extraordinary rendition; and that if they are Canadian citizens the Harper government will not lift a finger to help them?

'Cause I think they should.

Security fears? Chicago G8 Summit canceled, relocated to Camp David

quote:

"Amid concerns over thousands of protestors descending on Chicago, Illinois for the G-8 Summit this spring, the event have been moved to the presidential compound at Camp David, Maryland, around an hour outside of Washington."

"After the G-8 Summit, the NATO meeting is expected to continue as planned in Chicago on May 20 through 21."

"Coincidently, a new bill drafted by Congress, HR 347, will make it a federal offense to trespass on the grounds of any place granted Secret Service. If approved, the NATO Summit in Chicago will fall into this jurisdiction, as will the presidential retreat at Camp David. What does that mean for protesters? Even if you’re in the proximity of the premises, you could be considered a criminal for engaging in any activity that disrupts a governmental event."

NATO Behaving Like A Law Unto Itself - by MD Nalapat

http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/cndy/2012-03/07/content_14773644.htm

"Over the past decade, the overwhelming majority of NATO 'kills' in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya have been unarmed civilians. A large number of Iraqi, Afghani and Libyan civilians have lost not just their limbs but also their lives, because of 'mistakes' made by NATO personnel in the field.

A look at the diaries kept by alliance troops in the different theaters of war show the casual way in which human lives are taken, often on just the merest suspicion of hostile intentions..."

"Jack Layton brushed aside a long-held NDP policy that would pull Canada out of NATO, promising instead to work on changing the military alliance. 'We are going to work for the restructuring of [the] organization for the future. People in NATO are already transforming it themselves.."

Why We Are Protesting The NATO Summit  -  by Buddy Bell

http://www.counterpunch.org/2012/03/22/why-we-are-protesting-the-nato-su...

"Those who participate in the May actions to shed light on this deranged historical trend will not just be protesting NATO, but will also be proposing a different agenda for the nations who convene under NATO's banner. It is crucial that we walk, march, picket and speak to demand these real solutions.."

I"m glad many people are opposing directions of NATO/G8, hopefully beyond Chicago and Illinois.

The fora linked at the Chicago Spring site look good.

The subject of one event was "Why This Isn't Scary: Anarchy, Communism, Socialism, and The Black Bloc."

Without definitions, its difficult to know what exactly they're talking about, however I'd agree that, for example, a 'Communism' that includes 'Marxist Leninism' is perhaps initially more silly and counter-productive, because so many people know from personal and family experience what Lenin did.  Where these people refuse to take time to dialogue, and instead simply ignore movements welcoming a 'Communism' promoting Lenin, the effect overall is to limit entire movements to the margins.  Protesters participating with Leninists need to dialogue, with open and public resolution of differences, voiced clearly and frequently, especially in a city like Chicago with so many survivors of the horror of Lenin et al.

Otherwise what does become scary is the victory of forces which are happy when movements for peace and justice are limited from influencing mainstream society enough to create change.

Peace Activists Arrested In Attempt To Break Into NATO Headquarters

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/04/01/peace-activists-arrested-in-attemp...

"Hundreds of peace activists on Sunday tried in vain to break into the headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation in Brussels, with 483 of them arrested by police. The demonstration, organised by the Beligian association Action For Peace, two months before a NATO summit in Chicago, was called to protest the alliance's intervention in Afghanistan and Libya and nuclear-arming.

'A military alliance that intervenes all over the world and has nuclear weapons is a threat to world peace,' said Action For Peace. Some '500-600 policemen' were deployed to counter the demonstrations, a policeman said..."

Protest Rahm Emanuel

video

A coalition of Occupy Wall Street groups and community groups joined up to protest Rahm Emanuel's recent visit to a Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett fundraiser. The demonstrators are angry with Rahm Emanuel's recent budget cuts, civil liberty stifling ordinances for the upcoming NATO Summit, and refusal to issue a protesting permit to groups for the opening day of the Summit. They also are upset Rahm has cut vital public services while purchasing millions of dollars worth of paramilitary riot gear also for the NATO Summit. The group marched around the venue where Rahm was speaking and event tried to enter the venue but were blocked from entering by the Milwaukee Police Department. The protestors tried to negotiate with Police but were not allowed access.

Bosnia To Libya: 20 Years of NATO 'Peace Making' (and vid)

http://tv.globalresearch.ca/2012/04/bosnia-libya-20-years-nato-peacemaking

"Two decades ago saw the start of Europe's bloodiest military conflict since the Second World War. The Bosnian War and the break-up of the former Yugoslavia reignited ethnic conflicts between Muslims and Serbs. Over 4 years, around 100,000 people were killed, and more than 4 million displaced. The war eventually saw NATO's first-ever peace mission its history - setting up a template for incursions into foreign troublespots.."

NATO GAME OVER: non-violent intervention teams from ten European countries shut down NATO

PRESS RELEASE 1 APRIL 2012

NATO GAME OVER: non-violent intervention teams from ten European countries shut down NATO

Today, about 500 peace activists from more than ten European countries will take part in an action to shut down NATO headquarters in Evere, Brussels in a nonviolent intervention. When peace is at stake, nonviolent intervention is necessary. NATO is a select club of countries that globally wages war, deploys nuclear weapons and is prepared to use them in a first strike. This military alliance is a danger for world peace. On May 20th and 21st, the heads of government of NATO member states will gather in Chicago. Today’s nonviolent intervention sends them a clear message: NATO creates more problems than it solves.

Civil disobedience

NATO GAME OVER is an action of civil disobedience. Nonviolent intervention teams will enter the NATO area in order to prevent a more serious crime, the preparation of war crimes. The intervention teams will seal gates, windows and doors. The perimeter will be marked out with red and white hazard tape. Supporters will gather opposite the main entrance of NATO headquarters, to cheer on the intervention teams. Delegations from Germany, the Netherlands, France, UK, Finland, Sweden, Turkey, Italy, Portugal and Spain will be taking part in the action alongside Belgian activists....

They all have a clear message for the government leaders who are meeting in Chicago for the NATO Summit on May 20th and 21st: “We do not want a missile defence shield, We do not want NATO soldiers in Libya or Afghanistan, We do not want dangerous, useless and illegal nuclear weapons”.

Remove nuclear weapons

NATO’s deterrence and defense strategy will prove to be a difficult issue. Since the last NATO summit in November 2010, the alliance has been looking for “the appropriate mix of nuclear, conventional and missile defense forces”, under the NATO Deterrence and Defence Posture Review. NATO member states will need to agree on the future role of the approximately 200 American tactical nuclear weapons that are still deployed in five European countries. NATO bureaucracy is keen on maintaining the status quo.

However, nuclear weapons cannot be used without violating international humanitarian law and their deployment is a preparation of war crimes. These weapons do not serve any military purpose, and a majority of European citizens want them removed. NATO must overcome Cold War thinking, re-adjust its nuclear policy and withdraw these nuclear weapons. A failure to do so will be an obstacle for further nuclear disarmament.

Stop military intervention

In Chicago, NATO-secretary general Rasmussen wants to decide on the priorities for the further expansion of NATO’s military intervention apparatus. The war in Afghanistan proves the failure of military intervention. Under the pretext of ‘Responsibility to Protect’, NATO attacked Libya to force a profitable regime change. The war left Libya a fragmented country, where armed militias struggle for power.

NATO Launches New Online Communications Tool in Run Up to Chicago

http://www.nato.int/cps/en/natolive/news_85107.htm

"The WE-NATO platform is an exciting new way for the public to engage directly with NATO and help shape our policies and thinking,' said Ambassador Kolinda Grabar, NATO's Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy. The aim of the www.we-nato.org site is for NATO to reach out and engage directly with 'netizens' around the world in an open and transparent way.."

Not to mention the fact you need to apply for and pay for a Visa (approx 200) unless you are from the UK or Canada which means a interview with immigration officials about why you wish to go there and no, repeat no leeway as to how long you can stay. A night in the clink for protesting which puts you over your time means serious jail time

Chicago Summit: NATO to Complete Domination of Arab World - by Rick Rozoff

http://pakistan-observer.blogspot.ca/2012/04/chicago-summit-nato-to-comp...

"Regarding transformation in the Arab world over the past fifteen months in relation to NATO, the net result is that the US dominated military alliance is poised to gain one new adjunct, Libya, with Syria targeted as the next. Lebanon is another prospect for the Mediterranean Dialogue after Libya and Syria, which if it occurs will convert the entire Mediterranean basin into NATO territory.

Similarly, if the West and its Arab monarch allies can arrange for the installation of compliant regimes in Iraq and Yemen (perhaps royal pretenders to complete the pattern), NATO can acquire two additional Istanbul Cooperation Initiative consorts as well. The alliance identifies Iraq as a partner state and the NATO Training Mission in Iraq was instrumental in building the nation's new armed forces from scratch, training everyone from the top officer corps to oil police..

In respect to the remaining Arab-speaking countries, since at least 2005, leading American and NATO officials have promoted the deployment of NATO forces to Palestine in the event of, or as a precondition for, a peace deal with Israel. Last August, Palestine's Ma'an News Agency reported that 'Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told visiting US Congressmen on Thursday that the security of the future Palestinian state will be handed to NATO under US command..."
