U.N. and Red Cross condemn Israeli murder of 30 civilians

The UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) called it "one of the gravest incidents since the beginning of operations" by Israeli forces in Gaza on December 27. ...



Emergency workers from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Palestinian Red Crescent said they were not able to reach the wounded for four days because Israel would not allow them safe passage.



They said the children were starving when rescuers finally reached them after the "unacceptable" delay. ...



Pierre Wettach, the ICRC chief for Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, said: "The Israeli military must have been aware of the situation but did not assist the wounded."

Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff says Israel is justified in taking military action to defend itself against attacks by Hamas from the Gaza Strip.

"Canada has to support the right of a democratic country to defend itself," he told reporters in Halifax on Thursday after speaking to a forum of business leaders on the economy.

"Israel has been attacked from Gaza, not just last year, but for almost 10 years. They evacuated from Gaza so there is no occupation in Gaza.

"Hamas is a terrorist organization and Canada can’t touch Hamas with a 10-foot pole," he said. "Hamas is to blame for organizing and instigating these rocket attacks and then for sheltering among civilian populations."

Ignatieff said Canada must do whatever it can to get humanitarian and medical relief into Gaza when there is a ceasefire, but rocket attacks on Israel by Hamas must stop first."

I'm now not sure which thread I should add this to but I'm going to gamble on this one. When that UN school was shelled it was claimed that there was gunfire coming from it, i.e. that Hamas was using civilians as shields. Today in Haaretz:

Yes, Israel and it's apologists, hat tip to you OO, always make that claim. Yet, Amnetsy International has accused Israel of using human shields:

According to the Leader of the Official Opposition, and the head of the NDP/BQ/Lib Coalition, Hamas is using human shields. What do you say to that? And if the head of the coalition is saying this and Jack Layton doesn't contradict him, does that imply NDP support for Iggy's claim?

I saw this post when it first went up and it was strictly about Michael Ignatieff as leader of the Liberals and the opposition. Then I came back to see it had been rewritten. I guess you figured it would be more provocative if you could work Jack Layton into it but without an actual quote to work with you had to resort to a hypothetical: "if ... Jack Layon doesn't contradict him."

Is there a time limit on that? Is there any particular place where Layton has to get his opinion quoted? Anything in particular he has to say to satisfy whatever game you're playing?

This thread isn't about Iggie or Layton, it's about charges made against Israel by the UN and the Red Cross. And you're apparently so desperate to change the subject that you're resorting to trying to provoke people over things that haven't happened yet.

And even Jack Layton is a fraud:

Interesting how these trolls work in tandem to disrupt every discussion. I really must ask babblers not to get sucked in by such transparent tactics. Thanks for your comment to that effect, pogge.

How can we use this particular war crime to generate public awareness of Israeli war crimes? The fact that we need to quote Al Jazeera and U.K. media shows how far gone our MSM are.

Check out Naomi Klein's latest article, on the need for boycott and divestment, on commondreams.org. 

Good to have a strong and credible advocate from the activist Jewish community.  Let's hope it inspires more Jews to protest and especially to confront from within the dysfunctional institutions being held ideologically hostage by right-wing extremists (religious congregations, charities, etc., including that most egregious vehicle, Israel Bond campaigns).  It's a tougher task, certainly, than going to demos with like-minded people and venting online (like me; I get the irony).

 War crimes are war crimes are war crimes.  Lock-step zionists need to acknowledge this and act now.

It is interesting, and one wonders just how psychopathic these people are who come here ti try and shift the sands?

The pro-Israeli lobby are working overtime, on tonight's CBC  National they had the audacity to show where an alleged Hamas rocket put shallow pit holes in the pavement of a road, in order to justify Israeli actions in destroying Gazan's home and infrastructure, say nothing of their lives.

Amazing that they thought they could use 2007 footage to justify their current actions as well.

I totally understand that the atrocities that Israel is committing in Gaza are infuriating.  But I feel like we can't start a new thread every time they do something terrible during this, or else we'll be having a bunch of threads at the same time, all arguing the exact same thing.

Let's stick to one thread to discuss reports of violence and fighting and bombing happening in Gaza.  If people want to start a thread primarily about Canada's political responses or implications then I suppose that would warrant a separate thread.  I notice there's a thread that's specifically about Obama and what his response is, because the focus is on the US administration's foreign policy.  That's fine.  But let's not start a new thread every time Israel does something awful.  They do something awful every other day during this mass slaughter.
