carpooling
More and more people are carpooling today than ever before. I started carpooling because I needed to travel to work from the suburbs efficiently. The first time I started carpooling, I thought of the idea to share a seat in the car as bizzare. Now, I really enjoy it because I have met some awesome people.
Does anyone here at Rabble carpool? Whats the reason you carpool (environmental, cost, efficiency)?
Great topic, envirosustain, and welcome to babble!
I don't carpool, and I don't think it would work for my commute -- I take the bus or bike, which takes slightly longer than driving but I don't have to worry about parking and gas. My impression is that carpooling isn't as popular as it should be, but I'd also be interested in hearing about the experiences of its practicioners.
Ms. C. normally drops off one husband at work and two children at separate schools during the academic year. I take the bus home at the end of the day since reversing the routs Ms.C. takes in the morning would be incredibly inconvenient and time consuming.
Recent story in the Toronto Star revealed the average commute for Toronto to be an embarrassing 81 minutes. The story spoke of this as an embarrassment for Toronto, but I think of it rather as an embarrassment for those who do it. What can these people be thinking?
Instead of pursuing transportation policies intended to reduce commute times--doomed to fail--we might instead be exploring employment policies less dependent on commuting.
I used Allo-Stop a few times to travel between Ottawa and Toronto before the bus companies ganged-up to have it outlawed in Ontario.
The latest U of T Alumni magazine - available online - has a great analysis of the Toronto commuting issue, and of the battle between Ford and city council over subways versus LRT.
