Rabble Policy regarding links on Babble posts.
At the top of the Babble page is the following description.
babble is rabble.ca's discussion board but it's much more than that: it's an online community for folks who just won't shut up. It's a place to tell each other — and the world — what's up with our work and campaigns.
Today I received a message informing me that it si against Rabble policy for anyone to add links to other locations that they create on their posts. I am curious about the truth of this information and if it is true, I wonder why the policy exists when it is directly in conflict with the statement that, "It's a place to tell each other — and the world — what's up with our work and campaigns" since any discussion that tells the world what's up with our work and campaigns would to be effective entail the inclusion of links to the appropriate sites.
Can anyone enlighten me?
Hi Ronzig.
The babble policy is in a tab at the top of this page, right beside the tab that says "active topics"
The relevant part of the policy is:
All babblers agree not to post any copyrighted work unless they own the right to the material. Short quotes, accompanied by both links and references to such material are acceptable. Continuous linking to a publication, website, blog or other writing that is the babbler's or another party's is considered spamming. Anyone who does this could be warned and/or banned for doing so.
I hope that clarifies things.
In your case, Ronzig, just imagine if everyone who had a blog linked to it in every post (or every other post) they made. That would be not good.
I'm moving this thread to "rabble reactions", as that's the forum where discussions of babble, including babble policy goes.
Hi Ronzig--of course you can add links to other locations! You should! As many as possible, whenever you like! We do, however, have a policy regarding repeated links to your own website or blog. We like to keep the discussion in house, rather than use it as a hub to promote discussion elsewhere. That's just the way rabble does things--it's not the only way, or even the best way, but it's our way. There are lots of other bloggers here with great points of view, but we ask that everyone keeps the self-promotion to a minimum (as a former blogger, I sympathize with the difficulty of building up an audience).
And Ronzig, I would hope that you consider the second part of that PM you were sent. PM me or email me (catchfire[at]rabble.ca) if you want to discuss it further. I've been really enjoying your posts so far.
Thanks. I appreciate the clarification.
While we're on the topic of links, I'd like to suggest that people have their links open in a new window. To do so, change the "target" from the drop down list to "Open in a new window". It makes it easier to keep track of things imho.
There's an update (slowly yet inexorably) coming in which that will be the default, Polunatic2. Hopefully.
Polunatic, if you're on a Mac, hit "command" while you click and it will open in a new window. Groovy tech guy Brian showed me that on the weekend.
Thanks for the tip Maysie but i'm still on a - gulp - PC where I'm presented with a pop-up window. Looking forward to the new default settings though. Thanks for that update CF.
Which browser? Mine all open a new tab if I use Ctrl click.
That's a cool trick JR! Learn something new every day. My comment was about inserting links so that they'll open that way every time with a regular click.
(Was this a question?) Just add target="_blank" like this: < a href=" " target="_blank" > </a>
New Window Spam!
(Edit: just tried it out, it opens as a tab in my google chrome and mozila firefox!)

Ironically that's the way babble used to work, before its halfhearted makeover in 2008.
Here's an archived thread, chosen at random - try clicking on a link and you'll see what I mean.
