While I'm glad to see some coverage of the many worthy protests around the world, from a journalistic standpoint, this seems like a cop-out.
I think that "Person of the Year" should be an actual person, not a generic description that applies to millions of people.
It would be like Sports Illustrated naming "the shortstop" or "the quarterback" as Athlete of the Year or Rolling Stone naming "the rock band" or "the pop star" as Artist of the Year.
I agree. It's so generic that they don't have to commit to anything or show any real command of the facts.
poor time magazine. just because they couldn't find a picture of an actual protestor with a face for their cover, some people will accuse them of trying to dehumanize the movement. its sad, really, because they do try so hard to present balanced, impartial, principled coverage of important events.
me, i like time for the pretty colourful graphs, pictures of celebrities, and because they don't want me to think to much.
The cover was actually designed by Sheppard Fairey, an icononic graphic designer who is now probably best known for designing the Obama "HOPE" poster.
I like the cover, the choice just seemed to be taking an easy way out. I don't know if they only give it to living people but I thought Steve Jobs would have been a strong pick.

I didn't know that Time magazine had published anything since 1983. I guess I should stop relying on my dentist for updates on current events.

But more importantly, people who do not recollect Time as leading the attack on the communist world do not understand how significant it is for them to be in support of protest. I'm afraid it comes late in the game and reflects heightening fear of the rising Weltenschauung of Newt.

i bet none of the other "class of people" covers had their face covered/hidden, except perhaps the whistleblower. was the "american solder", say, in a gas mask, surrounded and and covered in swirls of blood red and manacing black?
years ago, when i was a junior photographer for a weekly newspaper, the photo editor explained how the human face is the most information rich piece of visual real estate.

Ah, if only the youths in that room represented the nation - or even opinion in Iowa, where America's first primary is set for Jan.3. Newt is tied there with Ron Paul, the libertarian Texan, who outpolls Newt on the campuses there because of his opposition to foreign wars...and his call to legalize drugs.
Mind you, Paul's promise to cut federal spending by $1-trillion (about a third) during his first year in office would play havoc with the lives of the dispossed (and most others), so he's not a threat to Newt's current position, but neither are the kids in that video representative of anything off campus. Except that obviously,some there also consider him "bat-crazy."
Time is afraid to cover the bedlam of America, as are all the other media. You'll recall how long it took for the first MSM to say anything about NY Occupiers. And given the level of political sophistication in the nation, they can get away with it.
