Early Olympics TV Ratings

Well, the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics are proving to be an early ratings success across in Canada ("Olympic Ratings Through the Roof"):

"According to BBM Canada overnight ratings, an average of 13.3 million people watched the 3.5-hour extravaganza on the consortium’s 11 channels. In all, more than 26 million tuned in at some point.

A stunning 84 per cent of all Canadians watching TV chose the opening ceremony..."

These Olympics are going to be an absolute block-buster in Canada.

I guess all those pre-Olympics protests against the evil, corporate-run games had a big impact.

Or not.

I suspect ratings are lower than expected for watching the actual events.  I know I usually watch the Olympics, but not this time.  When Agent Provacteurs showed up, and then after the horrible crash the Canadian coach blamed the driver, I thought that's enough for me.

CTV is reporting that the Canada v. USA game on Sunday was the most-watched sporting event in Canadian history.

It wasn't game seven of the Stanley Cup.  It wasn't a game against the Russians or the Swedes for Olympic gold.  It was a non-medal, preliminary hockey game against the Americans!

Is there a bigger focus on Americans in Canada than I had realized?

When I was listening to ESPN this morning while getting ready for work, the commentator said, with respect to this story, "Don't let Canadians ever tell you that they don't care what Americans think of them."

Okay, folks, what really explains the positively astronomical Canadian interest in this particular non-medal hockey game??

Simple sven aside from our inferiority complex we get no better feeling than beating the americans. We live in the shadow of you guys. It is the same as fins /sweden and newzealand/ australia. The chest thumping that comes from the states all the time is deftening. The nationalsim is so all pervasive you don't even realize it. We had costumers in from out of town asking why we had the canadian flag on a half dozen buildings in the city. He thought it was a holiday or special event. Goes to show you how different other cultures are. I can go for a ride along the river and see as many american flags staring back at me on a regular day as I see on canadian flags on canada day here.

To really get at it would take a lot longer to post. The fact you don't get it or know about it, is one of the reasons why we enjoy beating you sooo much(even though we lost) In general americans are the most naval gazing nation on the planet and we as canadians have such a need for approval from big brother who never notices us that when something comes along that makes americans take notice we take a certain weird pride in it. Again a generallization.
