Girl gets beaten outside a Vancouver gay prom

Cannot find a online link for this story being reported this am on Global.
The gist is, a girl, attending a gay prom on Saturday night, was standing outside with a group of other youth, when 5 youth approached them and started disparaging them for being homosexual.
The girl, who is hetero, took exception to what they were saying, after which they attacked and beat her.
The Vancouver lesbian and gay community, are calling for this, correctly so, to be lablled and prosecuted as a hate crime.
This was of particular interest this morning, as my granddaughter and I, had a discussion last evening about the use of the word "gay", in a disparaging manner, and why it wrong, even if peers are using it as an expression towards something they dislike.
Also, it is indicative of how language use, in popular cultural settings, is internalized and then expressed unconsciously, towards other negative occurances and instances.
Couldn't find the story on the ctv.ca website but I did notice the headline "Freight train derails in Italy, kills 12". They are net letting into the headline the fact that this was a train carrying LPG that exploded after derailing, killing all in a 300-meter radius of the train station in a small village the train was rolling through during the night. Mustn't have people think this could happen to them...

remind, I watched a brief clip of this story as well, and you're right - I can not find one link anywhere for it, not on CBC, Georgia Straight, xtra, etc.. IIRC, this happened near either or both of Denman or Davie streets in Vancouver. It's amazing that this kind of thing still keeps happening in the West End of all places, especially. One of these days, some victim is going to fight back and beat the crap out of some homophobic asshole.

I thought there was no link. People that attack a person just because they are gay should be dealt with the full extent of the law in my my opinion.
I am curious how successful the prosecution of hate motivated violence has been.
In BC, it seems like police or prosecutors are always investigating whether an assault is hate motivated, but that such charges rarely result.
The charge would be the same anyway. Whether it was a hate crime or not doesn't matter for charging, it matters (or is supposed to) at sentencing.
A friend of mine was invited to come out drinking with us to a gay bar in Ottawa for a party. A lot of my straight female friends enjoy the scene because there are not as man agressive in your face guys always bumping into you and stuff.
Anyways my friend ended up exchanging words with a crossdressing patron of the bar. My friend is about 5'8, 130 pounds and a mother of two. He a 6'4 250 pound ex-linebacker.
I was ashamed when the gay community rallied behind this guy and started claiming my friend was gay-bashing and commiting hate crimes. I was shocked at how a 6'4 250 pound man canassault a woman causing the damage he did and then turn around and claim to be the victim and pretty much brand this girl as a gay basher.
I guess the moral of my story is that both communities need to stop caring about what each other is doing and learn to accept one another.
Edit: Removed my comments regardng what started the argument and what was said as it's still an issue and no charges have been laid and there is a civil lawsuit.

this sucks, there needs to be tougher laws to help prosecute anti-gay groups. This is a huge issue right now in many islamic nations which is why these laws need to be INTERNATIONAL cause we cannot deny that gays are in all nations and all religions
