Till The Last Tiger Part 3
Hearing that the LTTE is "finished" in the north makes me think there so many ppl on here and around who say KKKanada had no part in this did it? If you look at the history of the conflict b4 2006 the LTTE controlled almost all the territory they wanted, were the 1st non-nation state to aquire military aircraft, shit they even trained other freedom fighting groups around the world such as hamas in things like urban warfare and suicide bombing (they invented it). 2006 comes the KKKonservative gov bans the LTTE knowing that the majority of their funding comes from Tamil-Canadians continues to fund the Sinhalese state and fast forward to today. Even know the conflict is far from over as long as the idea is alive and the most dangerous sqauds are in the east it just that the north is 90%+ tamil so they know that if they kill civilians it wont matter and more of the top command were and are situated in the north. The east is last time I seen 60-75% tamil but u know what it is. I also do not beleive that the top command is dead u seen how much jungle there is until they publicly display the body because, in past conflicts this has been used as a demoralizing tactic on the other side. Nothing has changed except that one side has the upper hand atm it may last longer because the LTTE since 06 were on their last legs because of no funding if that's changed within the next decade the fighting will start agen with the LTTE getting their shit bacc.
Every1 focuses on the protests like OMG had to wait in traffic but u know what that aint the issue

Statement by Minister Cannon on Recent Developments in Sri Lanka
The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement concerning recent developments in the conflict between the Government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam:
"Canadians are very concerned about the aftermath of the military action in Sri Lanka and the appalling effect it has had on civilians. This terrible, decades-long war has inflicted untold devastation and heartbreak on Sri Lankans. The Government of Canada wishes to express its concerns about civilian casualties, and to convey its condolences to the people of Sri Lanka and those around the world who have lost friends and family members in this horrific conflict.
"I spoke yesterday with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to discuss the situation in Sri Lanka. We agreed that there is a need for the international community to coordinate assistance and support to the people of Sri Lanka, and that it will be important to work with the international community in urging the Government of Sri Lanka to cooperate with these efforts.
"We will work together to support the United Nations in providing humanitarian assistance. We call on the Government of Sri Lanka to give the United Nations and other international humanitarian agencies immediate access to internally displaced persons. Canada remains concerned about the fate of civilians.
"Canada urges the Government of Sri Lanka to begin to find a long-term political solution that responds to the legitimate aspirations of all the people of Sri Lanka. Canada is prepared to assist Sri Lankan efforts to find political reconciliation and a lasting peace."

No. 139
The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Bev Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, today issued the following statement on the situation in Sri Lanka:
"Canada calls on the Government of Sri Lanka to allow full, safe and unhindered humanitarian access to all civilians affected by the conflict in that country and to ensure the safety and security of humanitarian workers.
"Canada calls on the Government of Sri Lanka to ensure that humanitarian assistance is provided to affected populations in accordance with international humanitarian principles. We also call on the Government to facilitate the work of humanitarian actors, including through the provision of additional visas to enable humanitarian workers to assist populations in need.
"We further call for the freedom of movement for all internally displaced persons and for the Government of Sri Lanka to facilitate the voluntary return of these persons to their homes in safety and with dignity as soon as possible. We urge the Government of Sri Lanka to ensure that the protection of and assistance for internally displaced persons are consistent with international standards.
"We call on the UN and other partners to work together to ensure a coordinated humanitarian response and to support the voluntary return and reintegration of civilians back into their communities so that they may live safe, secure and productive lives.
"We call on the Government of Sri Lanka to move forward immediately with the President's vow to launch a political process that is inclusive of all communities in Sri Lanka. This process must ensure that all the people of Sri Lanka can live in safety and receive the full protection of their human rights and fundamental freedoms."

Sri Lanka on Wednesday, June 10th deported Bob Rae MP from Colombo. He was briefly detained at the airport.
"The government of Sri Lanka knew my views, and granted me a visa," Rae said in an emailed statement. "I have flown a very long way only to be told the door is firmly shut."

Following is a Recent op-ed by Bob Rae MP:
If there is no magnanimity in victory, there is no victory
An article by MP Bob Rae, Liberal Foreign Affairs Critic
We are told that celebrations have broken out in the Sinhala community in Colombo. That is understandable, but it should be a celebration marked with sadness as well. "The war is over", the crowds will shout. But there is a difference between a war ended by agreement and a war ended by death and destruction.
The tens of thousands of deaths, towns and villages destroyed and hundreds of thousands of people made homeless in this long conflict have not, until recently, dominated the airwaves and televisions of the Western world. Seven years ago there was a window in this terrible tragedy, a ceasefire brokered by Norway in the wake of unprecedented bombings in the South and a dramatic toughening of world opinion after 9/11. As Chairman of the Forum of Federations, I attended most of the negotiating sessions of the so-called peace talks, and met with the leaders of government, opposition, civil society and the LTTE, known as the Tamil Tigers. I have been back many times since. I think of the possibilities of peace in the years after 2000 and I weep at the lost opportunity, the lost lives. So many dead now that were once alive, debating the possibilities and prospects for peace.
It is impossible to say anything about what is happening without enraging opinion on both sides. But some things must be said. The Sinhala community - the majority population - took power after the departure of the British in 1949 and over a long period made a series of disastrous decisions: imposing their language and religion (Buddhism) as the only official expression of the country, limiting access to universities and the civil service by the Tamil community, and refusing to broaden the country's politics to allow an effective expression of Tamil opinion. Repeated attempts by moderate Tamils to effect change were met by a stone wall of resistance. What had been a parliamentary issue turned violent in the 1970's, with the Tamil Tigers emerging as the most powerful guerrilla force after that time. The Tigers were ruthless at killing their opponents and insisting that they and they alone would represent the Tamil people. Their goal was an independent Tamil state in the north and northeast controlled by the Tamil Tigers.
We are always looking for "good guys and bad guys" in a dispute. The Sri Lankan government, for example, insists that the only way to understand what is happening is that the Tigers are thugs and terrorists and so have to be eliminated. The Tigers and their apologists will point to the evil of a corrupt government that they say wants to eliminate the Tamils entirely.
The Tigers are ruthless and have never made the transition from a guerrilla army to a democratic force. They use suicide bombers against civilians and recruit children into their army. But their support around the world is partly based on the sense of the Tamil people that they have never been able to find justice inside a failed state. The Tigers appear as the only public voice for the many grievances of the Tamil population inside Sri Lanka. That does not justify or excuse suicide bombings and the recruitment of children. But it does mean that the narrative of "they're terrorists and that explains everything" is simply inadequate.
The collapse of the peace talks in 2003, the tsunami, the escalation of killings and assassinations, and the official termination of the ceasefire by the government in 2008 meant that the advocates of a "military solution" on both sides won out. In recent months, we witnessed an escalation of the violence as the Sri Lankan government defeated their opponents once and for all. Hundreds of thousands have been affected by this conflict, with thousands still remaining in internal displacement camps at the hands of their Sri Lankan adversaries. While the fighting seems to have stopped for now, the hard work only begins.
The north of the country has been devastated by this war - there will be no pictures on state controlled television of the dead and wounded, the villages destroyed and the lives shattered. I can remember some years ago a senior government official expressing shock at the physical destruction in and around Jaffna when he paid a visit after the ceasefire. "I had no idea it was that bad". I expressed deep surprise that he didn't know, the hospitals and schools destroyed, the homes wiped out, the sheer scale of the physical destruction. The same holds true today.
These hundreds of thousands are not terrorists. The world cannot stand by and do nothing while they attempt to rebuild their lives. The international community can't allow the Sri Lankan government to say "it's an internal matter" and stay away. Nor can Canada, with its long history of engagement in this issue and it hosting the largest population of Tamils outside of South Asia, stay silent any longer. Political accommodation and reconciliation must emerge if this conflict is to be resolved. The Tamil community of Sri Lanka cannot be ignored, but must be brought into the fold if the Sri Lanka has any chance of securing long term peace and stability.
The many and widely attended demonstrations over the past several weeks throughout the world have proven just how powerful these grievances remain in the Tamil community both within and outside Sri Lanka. A military victory is not enough.
If there is no magnanimity in victory, there is no victory. I shall go back to the Vanni, because the effort must still be made. But it is hard not to cry at what has been lost, how much life has been destroyed. And what must still be done to bring justice to the peace that is being proclaimed so loudly.

There is nothing new to the policy. It is the same policy based on the same stand. Bob Rae is still acting ignorant given his knowledge on this issue. They just released one to show to the Tamil community that they are still concerned about the Tamils...a stunt for vote in my view....

For Immediate Release
Three Refugee Advocates Detained by Indonesian Authorities for more than 11 hours
(Merak, Indonesia) - Tuesday afternoon three refugee advocates - Jessica Chandrashekar from Canada, Sara Nathan and Pamela Curr from Australia were detained by Indonesian authorities. After 11 hours the three individuals were released overnight but were taken in for questioning again today and still have not been released.
Ian Rintoul of the Refugee Action Coalition said the three were in Indonesia to meet with Indonesian officials and arrange humanitarian supplies for the 254 Tamil refugees. 'We are extremely concerned for their welfare and are demanding their immediate release,' Mr Rintoul said. 'Sara, Pamela and Jessica have done nothing wrong. They were in Merak because of their concern for the welfare of the people on the boat. The conditions on the boat are deteriorating day by day, and there is an urgent need for humanitarian supplies. They represent the international concern among refugee supporters and the Tamil community for the plight of the Tamil refugees at Merak.'
The asylum seekers, who have been living on a boat for over 100 days, are under threat of deportation back to Sri Lanka. One asylum seeker has died from having been denied medical care. Another person is in need of immediate medical attention for injuries sustained during the war. There are 31 children on the boat and one pregnant woman. All of the asylum seekers are suffering from lack of food and medicine and the denial of medical attention.
The boat Australia bound was intercepted by Indonesian Navy upon Australia's request. Australia, as a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention, has a responsibility to protect these refugees. Human rights advocates around the world are condemning Australia and Indonesia for stalling the refugee boat for the past four months.
Through community outreach and media campaigns, Canadian HART seeks to raise awareness about the human rights abuses against the Tamil minority population in Sri Lanka. Working in collaboration with labour unions, student groups, faith-based organizations and community organizations, Canadian HART aims to draw Canadian and international attention to the situation of Tamils in Sri Lanka and to push for an international presence and monitoring of the humanitarian crisis in Sri Lanka.
