In the wake of Brigette DePape

Hi everyone,
I've written a piece about the media (and to some extent public) reaction to Ms. DePape, feel free to comment, ignore, or share: http://themassornament.com/?p=182#more
why bother coming here to say you made a statement somewhere else?
Good article. There's a certain somebody leading a certain progressive party who needs to read it. I like the conclusion you reached:
"...To others, however, Brigette has provoked grassroots political activity – on her facebook fan page we find an endless profusion of local, user-generated political blogs and homemade content: a large section of the Left has become politically activated.
At least one thing is for certain: by stepping outside of the system, this rogue page has launched the nation into political debate. Love her or hate her, this is a vital step toward a healthy democracy."
To be honest, I'm not a fan; I thought this was nothing more than a bit of shameless self-promotion. But definitely when the Post and the Globe labelled her an enemy of democracy, that was ridiculous. And calling her a hero is beyond silly.
Edited to add: thoughtful piece, Michael. Your comment about her improved career prospects was right on the money.
To be honest, I'm not a fan; I thought this was nothing more than a bit of shameless self-promotion.
And when a party leader travels across the country nonstop, meeting media, shaking hands, organizing photo ops - that's not shameless self-promotion, right? After all, who does she think she is?
why bother coming here to say you made a statement somewhere else?
Sorry, I thought that's what this board was for. You know, "news by the rest of us."
Thanks for the comments so far.
I appreciated the article, Thehhammer, and I hope to see more.

Great article and spot on. Keep 'em coming despite the trolls.
I think you should expand on your theory of public disengagement in our parliamentary system. It's a ripe topic ready to be picked. In my opinion, while our system concentrates political power within the spheres of a select few, there is ample opportunity for civic discourse for anyone who wishes it. Mass movements can lead to real change. If we can accept that argument, then the question inevitably becomes - What's stopping us?
If you were to do a little research into that, I think it would make for a very provocative read.

Will join [Ottawa] rally on Friday to oppose Harper speech
Good article. I agree. I was in Wolfville N.S. this weekend and was delighted to see that someone had taken a piece of weatherproof red paper and printed the name "HARPER" in white block letters on it. They then had attached this somehow to stop sign so that it said "STOP HARPER." It did not damage the sign so it was not vandalism, but it looked like it had been there for a while and nobody had bothered to take it down. That says something there!
