Ontario is planning to kill its promise to protect an ecological gem — an old-growth forest near Temagami. The Ministry of Natural Resources wants to change the “forest reserve” designation for 340 hectares around Wolf Lake to “general use,” which puts a greater focus on mining instead of forests and recreation.
I spent a lot of time between North Bay - Cochrane - Hearst - Thunder Bay in the 1980s and early 1990s and I know the Temagami area reasonably well - it's gorgeous. Wasn't there a land-use controversy and protest in the same area about 20 years ago?
And not a peep in the whole article of the outstanding rights, title and sovereignty of the true owners. This 1995 letter to Verna Friday, Temagami elder, from her lawyer, may provide some necessary background.
