Here it is - what do people think?

No big surprises though i see Tabuns is now critic for energy and eduaction and Jonah Schein is critic on environment. No surprise that Jagmeet is Attorney General critics
I heard that Peter Tabuns refused to come to meet with New Democrats in my area concerned about the direction of industrial wind. I have no confidence in him on energy. And education and energy? That's too very big files and something is going to slip.
I'm pretty disapointed that none of the younger memebers of caucus like Sarah or Jagmeet were given youth issues (or an area they can focus on youth engagement) or education. No protfolio on electoral/gov't reform eh? thats also mildly disapointing as the results of the last election should be enough for the NDP to be nudging the the Assembly to pass some reforms.
Agreed Both are huge porfolios, he should have stuck with Energy and a smaller portfolio, give education to another member like Sarah (see comment above)... Must have had a reason why he nevers showed, hes my MPP (tabuns) and i don't think he'd pass on an opportunity to promote/defend wind energy.
But they look to be good choices... some regionally strategic, others play up on past experience and backgrounds. I like that transportation was split and Jonah was given the urban focus, i think the needs of urban, suburban and rural transportation are different.
Let's keep in mind that some doubling up of portfolios was inevitable given that McGuinty has 22 cabinet ministers (some of whom have multiple portfolios to begin with) and the NDP only has 17 caucus members. At least there is way less doubling up now than when there were just 10 people in caucus.
Usually the initial "shadow cabinet" announcement is all about making people critics for specific ministries/ministers and other areas of focus come later. Since there is no Minister of Youth in the McGuinty government - there will be no "shadow Minister of Youth" (though i see that Monique taylor who is in her 30s is the critic for "Children and Youth Services". I suspect that at some later date some additional responsibilities will be announced that go beyond this.

Sorry but Tabuns has been giving a big FU to rural Ontario on energy issues, particularly industrial wind, for some time and when extended an offer to come visit, by strong New Democrats, he apparently turned it down flat. Horwath putting Tabuns back in energy means that the NDP didn't learn much about what has happened to the Liberals in rural Ontario. Big mistake.
or maybe Tabuns carries enough party status that pulling him from energy would create caucas desent. I really hope that Tabuns reconsiders his stance on industrial wind or at the very least comes for a visit in Huron/Bruce. Sees and hears from progressives in this riding.
I so admired Jack Layton for coming for a visit and meeting with municipal leaders in the area and local riding association. Tabuns could learn lots from how Jack got respect and admiration in this rural riding. Oh, and perhaps hear the folks out on nuclear.
While surfing, I have TVO on, and Steve Paikin is covering the week in the House, including the budget debate.
To my surprise, I thought I heard Stephen Lewis speaking, and went to see who it was? NDP Finance Critic Michael Prue. I had no idea he could be such a good orator, or do such a good Stephen Lewis.

MIchael Prue has the charisma of a Bill Clinton or Pierre Trudeau. I have admired him for years for his anti-poverty advocacy. If Ontario New Democrats were smarter, he would not have finished 4th in the Ontario NDP leadership race.
One can thank the Catholic union who has membership with NDP for the prime reason of ensuring financial privelege for separate school system and ensuring Prue did not get close to the NDP leadership - the rest of the candidates kissed the pope's ring. All Prue wanted was for the NDP membership to sincerely engage into the discussion of "one of school system." It didn't mean he was for or against this but just the importance of NDP engaging in those tough discussions about equity and privelege - idealisms that the provincial NDP pay lip service to.
Prue is thoughtful and has bottomline principles.

So any is there anything to substanciate the "rumour"?

"...The upcoming session may also yield a few surprises. Rumours persist that a New Democrat is interested in crossing the floor, which would bolster the Liberals' voting power"
... I'm sure they are Liberal sources, i'm sure they have been out in full force trying to lure PC/NDP MPPs tp cross over. Its still pretty dis-heartning to hear this though

Presumably the Government is trying to get NDP agreement on something, and trying to rattle the caucus to scare them into not pushing too hard. A good sign: they actually realize they have a minority. The road-runner, having run off the edge of the cliff, has just looked down.
I'm trying to picture the hypothetical scenario..."I know I was elected as a New Democrat, but I was so impressed by all the wonderful looking policies in the Drummond report that McGuinty wants to bring in - that I decided to join the Liberals!" (sic.)
yeah, as a New Dem newly elected that is really really attractive - not!

Psst... Pass it on to everyone you know!
