What going to happen with champlain bridge!
Look like Harper gov found the perfect spot to punish quebec. The champlain bridge.
This bridge is have reach is usefullness and will be soon obselete. But Harper gov don't want to ear a about building a new bridge before the old one colapse. Probleme is if we shut that bridge there will be major economical problem in the region and will affect the ontarion and maritim province to by cutting a way and slow down the traffic making the travel much longer.
The other consequence of the bridge shutting down will be to give sovregnist more amunition for sovreignty.
The infrastructure story was on the news today with people saying that tourists might stay away because of fear or inconvenience. I wrote a letter to "Montreal" today. Perhaps a little off topic but here it is (I sent it to the Montreal Gazette) I thought some might find it interesting.:
Letter to the people of Montreal:
I watched the stories this week about infrastructure in your city potentially causing tourists to stay away. Even before then, I was thinking of writing a letter to you to thank the people of Montreal for sharing your amazing symphony orchestra with us last week but on seeing these stories I knew I must.
My family lives in Ottawa. We came with two friends last week and visited your city. We chose that date because of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra concert in Verdun. We spent much of the day showing our two friends around - one of whom was from China and had never been to Montreal. We visited the old port, the Olympic buildings, the science centre, the mountain, and old Montreal. As always your city is beautiful, your people welcoming, your architecture exciting, your history intriguing and your culture incredibly rich. The concert we saw was a highlight of our summer. They were truly wonderful. I love classical music but for a family like ours it is so costly to go to the symphony and this was the first time I had the opportunity to see an Orchestra of such high calibre since I was a child.
Nothing will keep us away from visiting your city and being so grateful for your warmth and atmosphere. We intend to come back later this month. Our Chinese friend was incredibly impressed and wants to come back as well. We love Montreal and we will see you again -- very soon.
I love Montreal, have moved there 2 times from Toronto, and might move there again;
BUT the infrastructure -- roads, bridges, overpasses -- were allowed for decades to deteriorate, and the punishing spring rite of swerving to avoid all the pothoels is unworthy of a developed economy ....
this summer, road/bridge repair has become a major, maybe THE major , Montreal political issue on radio hotline shows and in the press:

Sure but worth it nonetheless.
Montreal was my second home, after Ottawa, for the 60s and 70s. Loved the place. I've been back since, but not often enough.

And of course, that's not the only problem about new bridges - anywhere these days. The president of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities got a letter into the Globe the other day saying he expects the "new, long-term infrastructure plan" being put together in Ottawa for all municipalities will be "a step in exactly the right direction." He's gotta be a Conswervative. Oh for the days of Jack's leadership of that foundering organization.
The Globe printed my letter the next day saying: "Others may be holding their breath as to what a regime also promising lower taxes and less government involvement has in mind. The Champlain Bridge proposal may have initiated the indrawn breath."
Could we have more news out thataway from the Quebec contingent? Don't keep us in suspense.
