I challenge everyone to grow a garden this summer!
Last year I sowed the usual stuff in my community garden plot, but ended up summerfallowing most of it, as most of my seed rotted and very little came up.
I just made some potatoe and leek soup from leeks I planted last summer. They were pretty tasty. None of my purple sprouting broccoli appears to have survived the winter deluges, however. Although the kale has held out nicely.
I usually grow herbs in my yard, but this year I want to expand the garden plot to make room for veggies. Year before last we had a renegade tomato plant grow in one of my ornamental beds - tomato seeds in our compost no doubt. They were yummy.
This year I think I want to try to grow something I can preserve. Problem: my entire acreage is about the size of a twin bed.
I'm considering zucchini relish. I think I can grow enough to fill a few mason jars and eat of them over the winter. I won't really be able to say I'm "living off the land" or anything, but I'm keen to prove the concept. I suppose I could work on preserving some herbs, too... those usually represent a good bang for your buck when you don't have much room.

I'm there! We spent most of yesterday pruning an aggressively growing tree so my garden patch can get some sun. I'm planning the usual tomatoes and basil, but also I'm going to get some containers happening so that I can try some root crops like garlic (I live close to a rail track, and there are rumours of toxic spills in the past).
My favourite urban accidental garden: my neighbour removed her front lawn about ten years ago to put in an ornamental garden of native plants. In the spring, her son had a popcorn fight with some buddies that ended up in the front yard. Soon after, little corn plants started sprouting, and the neighbour decided to leave them in and see how they did. For the rest of the summer, you'd see passersby doing a double take at the patch of corn growing in a tiny front yard in the middle of the city.
My biggest gardening problem is pests. Not six-legged, but four-legged; either raccoons or opposums eat my seedling plants. I put them out and they disappear overnight, unless they're tomato or basil for some reason.

Oh my goodness I am jealous! Here on PEI, we still have 3-4 ft of snow over our garden, it snowed all day yesterday and snowing right now. We have the wood stove roaring. The rule here is normally not to plant until June 15th if you want to be safe from frost.

Is this in a greenhouse or other indoor garden?
I start plants in a sun space /greenhouse or in dark warm or cool conditions where required.
So without really meaning to, I made a vegan spread on Saturday. Falafels (made from dried chickpeas and favas, soaked), hummus (OK, canned chickpeas for that), onions with sumac, cucumber salad with mint, rice and tahini sauce. All in all, not bad. The falafels had the right crunch on the outside, soft on the inside, but I think I underseasoned them (it's been ages since I made them).
It snowed here last night. WTF?
