flat threading over hierarchical threading

Are there particular reasons why babble was designed with this style of threading?

reasons why babble users prefer or don't prefer using flat styled threads?
flat styled threads make responding to multiple comments much easier. also, i think we have a lot of people who enjoy polyphonic discussions that can weave in and out of eachother on a thread.
