missing posts

There are reports appearing that posts are disappearing.  The only circumstances under which I will totally delete a post is commercial spam.  Sometimes a post is altered due to libel concerns or rare cases of just plain vandalism, but in those cases I always leave the hole where the post used to be, and will comment on it.

I do recall once it got so bad I just went through hitting delete because there just wasn't time to go through the edit process for all of them, but that was years ago.

So, if someone is aware of a post just vanishing, could they please report it here, with as much info about who's post, when and where it was.

I don't want to get into moderating other parts of rabble, like blogs, news etc, but it might be a good idea to report those here also if you become aware of them and I will pass this on to the tech people.

Could this thread please just be reserved for that purpose, and not other comment.

Thanks much

Oldgoat - I emailed the mods about this as you know the other day, but I am definitely not talking about posts whose text has been edited or deleted - I'm talking about posts which vanish without a trace, so that that id # of the following post is actually reduced by one, as if the original post was never there at all.

Example - this post by KenS was in reply to a post directly above it by webbietalkjam, which would have been post #16 in the thread. I also responded to his post. Sometime later, webbie's post vanished, and KenS's post moved up in number to fill the gap.

The same thing happened with one of webbie's other posts, though I can't be bothered to try and find it right now.

Remind has asked whether this is a byproduct of a post being flagged as offensive. If it is, it's either very recent, or else it's sporadic.

I responded to webbie here, at what is now post 13, but the post I responded to is gone.

I'm seeing a post # 13 by webbie that you appear to be responding to.

How very interesting ... because I am not. I can't see webbie.

ETA: That is, I see me as #13.

I don't see it, oldgoat.

Also in this thread, LWB's original post disappeared.

Ok, I have a hypothesis.  Perhaps even a theory.

I just logged in with a sock puppet account and the posts are as skdadl and others describe.  So it seems the mods can see the deleted posts.  Here's what I think is happening.

There has always been a bit of a problem with the lists of posts people have flagged.  It's really actually a poor system.  Sometimes the list clears and sometimes not.  Without going into a lot of boring detail, how we've taken to clearing that list is also unintentially removing posts from the board.  The mods can still see them, and they're also saved to a list we can access.  I've just emailed the other mods and asked them to stop clearing the list this way until we can get this sorted out.

BTW, I don't see how this accounts for M. Spectors missing blog responses.  That remains another issue as far as I can tell.

Post #4 in that thread is a typical offensive post by webbietalkjam, of blessed memory. As a test, I've just flagged it as offensive. If the mods heed oldgoat's advice, this post should not vanish now, right? Right. I think.

Oldgoat is never always right.

Oldgoat is always wrong right.

Whew, practice makes perfect, but I've obviously got some work to do yet...

I think this could be a case of spooky action at a distance of the quantum physics conundrum-drum paradoxical riddle thingy. Has anyone actually observed it happening?

Why don't you find another board to troll?

I must admit I have never met a bored troll.

Me either, but we seem to have a gathering of new trolls. If these new trolls would be at least remotely interesting, we might have some fun.

Maybe we can have a thread just for the trolls. Troll Centre perhaps? They can keep each other amused all day posting pictures of string and shiny things.

It is. I loves oldgoat! Not in the tingly kind of way, but in the "hey oldgoat is cool" kind of way.

The fact that your posts don't vanish proves conclusively that no human being is censoring this board for offensive posts.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments.  Our Maysie stayed up all night it would seem, and figured out how to clear the list properly.  It is actually set up for a different sort of application, but it's doable for now until maybe we can get it changed to something which more meets our needs.

A lot of chronically thin skinned people here, even the smallest joke is met with spitting/hissing and huffing.

http://www.rabble.ca/babble/national-news/judge-makes-stand-against-laws...

There was an article I started this thread with that suddenly disappeared.  I wouldn't even have noticed if Remind didn't point it out.
I don't think that there is any corruption on the part of any of the moderators which was proven when it was NOT deleted again when I reposted it.  I know from past experience that posting anything anywhere on the internet about pedophilia comes with risks.
This is likely a demonstration of that.

Within an hour of making that post my computer started freezing.  Anything I tried to type wouldn't show up until 20 or 30 seconds after.  And my words were coming out scrambled.

Though I had decent virus protection it obviously wasn't enough (but I didn't have one tiny problem with this computer before).  So before I dared post anything else about it I went out and bought the best protection available.

I want to know if there is an explanation from moderators for removal of that post otherwise I will draw the reasonable conclusion that the pedophile community has even more hackers than some major corporations working to protect their interests.

Your answer will let me know whether I have to go to extreme measures to fortify my computer.

And if OldGoat's theory is correct then who flagged my post and why?

Is there anyway of finding out who flagged someone's post?  That may prevent people from flagging any post they want knowing it will be automatically deleted without being read by a mod first.

Ther are always people that take exception to what someone else posts-or thinks.

And the anonymity provided by a Report Button means they can drop a dime anytime.

You are surely right about certain people taking "exception".

What's going on with your computer doesn't have anything to do with here.  A lot of stuff gets flagged, and it goes into a list.  We were having a hard time clearing the list and used a different method which ended up deleting the posts.  It took us a while to figure out what was going on.  The flagged post system was probably designed for a newspaper on line section, or the Huffingtom Post or something.  It's not really great for a community like this with more hands on moderation where things get dealt with right on the board.  Anyway, that's what happened, and on behalf on rabble.ca I apologise.

ETA: People flag posts for all kind of reasons, some of which I buy and some not and some I don't totally understand myself.

And regarding people flagging posts as offensive. We know who flags which posts. And how often. There is no anonymity for that, other than your babble handle/nickname if you're using a pseudonym.

Some posts are flagged multiple times, for a variety of reasons. We as mods don't "out" folks by publicly naming who flagged what. But we know.

I wouldn't mind admitting that I'd flagged something (I haven't often), although I don't think other people should be outed if they want their complaints to remain anonymous.

But I thought the main reason for not saying "I'm going to complain about you" on the board is that it tends to start a diversionary argument, maybe even a flame war. Better just to remain cool and on-topic at the time and send a quiet alert to a mod. (*mumble mumble* not as much fun, o' course *mumble mumble*)

But perhaps public flogging trumps flagging in many cases, skdadl? Clearing the odium from the podium immediately? (thanks olympics)

The browse by issue thingy isn't a search function. I don't know where the hell the search function is.

I still see the search bar. And the ill-placed, clumsily worded and poorly designed "browse by issue" button.
