babble is rabble.ca's discussion board but it's much more than that: it's an online community for folks who just won't shut up. It's a place to tell each other — and the world — what's up with our work and campaigns.

In this thread:

http://www.rabble.ca/babble/body-and-soul/atheists-know-more-about-relig...

Fidel closed with calling anyone who doesn't believe in his oppressive, child molesting, woman hating religion - a bigot.

How the hell can I be bigoted against a religion that treats me and all women like chattel? How the hell is holier than thou Fidel allowed to get away with this shit?

This is exactly the same as calling those who are against SSM bigoted against the church and it SHOULD NOT be tolerated here. I have asked Fidel over and over again how he justifies his religion loving with his social justice and he NEVER answered. Just continually ignores how religion is used to oppress people and how that same religion is used to screw people up so badly that we have had 9 kids kill themselves over anti-gay bigotry, mainly inspired by the very religion Fidel so loves.

I am so fucking angry at that shot at us by Fidel. I am a bigot because I don't believe in his hateful religions?

What is the babble rule for calling anyone a bigot who is against the biggest bigot ball of all - organized religion? How is it that Fidel and some others REFUSE to acknowledge the vast damage that his religion has done to women, to FN people, to gays and lesbians? And how is he allowed to call us bigots?

Hi Stargazer,

You know I love you, but if you have a problem with a post, flag it as offensive to bring it to a mod's attention. Secondly, there are diverging views on the place of religion in a progressive rubric. We don't agree on babble: that's why there's a babble. It is not a unique view on the left to question the caricature of religion presented by some contemporary atheists. It is not out of bounds on babble to take this view. Finally, I don't agree with your characterization of Fidel's post. His closing post is:

Fidel wrote:
[Dawkins's followers] jus' wanna believe. The political right created their own bugbear. Anti-religious bigots everywhere hold the bogeyman in low regard. They are bred, and lead, themselves.

This doesn't seem to me to be the same thing as "calling anyone who doesn't believe in his oppressive, child molesting, woman hating religion, a bigot." I could be wrong, but perhaps you should ask Fidel to explain himself rather than assuming the worst.

And since we don't open threads about specific babblers, I'm closing this. If you'd like to continue the atheist discussion, or discuss the meta-issue of what babble should or should not tolerate with regards to religion, you can open a thread that doesn't target any babbler in particular. If you'd like to discuss this with me or Maysie, PM or email us.
