Thousands of chickens drown in Chilliwack floods

Thousands of caged birds and a handful of livestock drowned in the floods that have forced dozens of Chilliwack residents from their homes in recent days, according to the mayor of the Fraser Valley city.

“The poultry industry was particularly hard hit,” Mayor Sharon Gaetz said Sunday. “We had four incidences that were reported to us of poultry farmers who lost between 400 to 1,000 birds each.”

Much of the Fraser Valley, including areas in Chilliwack, is flood plain.  Just what is it about the words "flood plain" that politicians, developers, home owners and farmers don't understand.  Check here to see what happened in 1948.  http://www.ec.gc.ca/water/en/manage/floodgen/e_bc.htm#1948  It will happen again.

I know Toby it is amazing isn't it? They develop and move onto flood plain then are amazed when it floods. I learned in like Grade 5 socials that one does not build or set up camp on a flood plain.

If one is looking for regulations to be set up to keep people from harming themselves en masse, they should be making them for the non-developing of flood plains, as well as the removal of peoples and industries from them. In particular, ones that are as important as the Fraser water shed is.

Fraser Valley farmland is so rich precisely because it is flood plain.  Building on it is stupid.  Davy Barrett's NDP government set up the Agricultural Land Reserve to protect that farmland.  Ever since, developers have done everything they could to get around the rules and build on farmland/flood plain.  These guys make lots of money and don't have to live with the mess.
