The Winter and Spring of Occupy

A small Occupy Toronto encampment located in downtown Toronto has been shut down by the police.

Early Wednesday morning, Toronto police arrived to enforce the eviction of the small camp located near City Hall. The demonstrators were on provincial land - Osgoode Hall and the courts at 361 University Avenue - since the Toronto Stop the Cuts demonstrations and Occupy Toronto's Occupy City Hall encampment on January 17, 2012.

The South March Highlands is one of the most bio-diverse areas remaining in urban Canada, with more than 675 different species of life, including 240 species of wildlife and over 134 different types of nesting birds.

For the past year, local citizens, environmentalists and First Nations groups representing over 14,000 people have mounted a vigorous campaign to save undeveloped lands in the 10,000-year-old, ecologically unique, South March Highlands.

Last night, I stopped watching the Super Bowl to watch Egypt instead.

Recently, I have been spending my nights glued to the computer monitor instead of sleeping -- literally fighting off sleep -- watching the Egyptian uprising online.

I, as it seems like thousands of others, have been scrolling through Twitter desperate for news.

And even more desperate to find a livestream to watch firsthand.

Occupy Oakland held their "Move In Day" demonstration on Saturday in Oakland, California.

Occupy demonstrators had hoped to occupy a long-time vacant convention centre, leading to hundreds of arrests and the Oakland police department's deployment of chemical weapons, rubber bullets and flash grenades on demonstrations well into the night.

Activists were deluged with tear gas during the day and kettled into mass arrests in the evening. At one point during the evening, activists broke into Oakland City Hall, damaging displays and burning an American flag.

A 174-page report by the Office of the Independent Police Review Director (OIPRD) released on Friday January 20, 2012, recommended that five Toronto police officers should face criminal charges for using unnecessary force against activist Adam Nobody.

The recommendations from OIPRD were based on interviews with a dozen police witnesses, the five officers involved, five civilian witnesses and Adam Nobody himself.
