CBC has reported, “Despite a reluctance to discuss details of the late-stage (Canada-European Union free trade agreement) talks, the Harper government has scheduled a series of photo opportunities across Canada this week to tout the benefits of a potential deal. A gaggle of ministers, including (Trade Minister Ed) Fast himself, has been out doing a series of cross-Canada photo ops and orchestrated sector-by-sector promotional events to sing the benefits for uniquely Canadian products.”
This morning, Council of Canadians activists – including Board member John Cartwright, trade campaigner Stuart Trew, and Ontario-Quebec organizer Mark Calzavara – countered one of these photo op/ promotional events at the Tilley factory in Toronto where Lisa Raitt, Harper’s minister of labour, spoke in support of CETA.
Yesterday, MacLean’s columnist Paul Wells wrote, “Harper has tried to play this file differently from the way Brian Mulroney played the Canada-U.S. free trade wars. He thought he could low-bridge CETA, keep the whole process low-key, avoid ratcheting up the tension. Now the deal’s opponents have outflanked him on every side.”
