The Council of Canadians welcomes this call to action by the Chiefs of the First Nations in Manitoba.

We join with them to strongly oppose C-38 and C-45 and call on the Harper government to immediately repeal these pieces of legislation.

In May 2012, Council of Canadians chairperson Maude Barlow said of C-38, “The Harper government appears intent on systematically dismantling the few protections that have been put in place at the federal level to protect our freshwater heritage.” In October 2012, she said of C-45, “This bill calls our whole democracy into question. Laws are now made unilaterally by the Prime Minister, with no regard for the people or their parliamentarians.”

Council activists have been, and will continue to be, doing everything we can against these bills.

For more of our commentary in opposition to C-38 and C-45, please see here and here respectively.
