I Read the News Today, Oh Boy!

IRTN's picture

You've heard the IRTN podcast (haven't you?) Now check out the companion blog: Two American ex-pats, separated by 7500 kilometers and their levels of optimism, take on the issues of the day in the United States, Canada, Europe and the world. They hunt down news you might have missed, sometimes provide good insights, and shake their heads at the rampant idiocy in the world more often than can be considered healthy ... good thing they live in countries with socialized medicine!

Shout It Out: netroots responds with cash against heckling Congressman

| September 10, 2009

[Updated]

Americans love to yell.  We all pretty much know that.  But, unlike the Canadian system or the British system, for some reason you don't yell at the top dog (the Prez) when he (still always a he) is addressing the nations' elected officials.  Ohh you can glare and stare and even tweet.  But you don't shout.  It Just Isn't Done.  You know who now knows that best?  Joe Wilson the  Congressman from South Carolina who shouted "you lie" at Obama.  Now, Obama actually doesn't appear to have been lying at this point in his speech but that is not the point.  If people yelled "you lie" every time a President lied, why America would be addicted to menthol drops.  No, it is not about the any lie but strangely about manners.  Who knew?  The result?  Not only did the Republican leadership call Wilson out to some extent but the netroots have responded with an amazing fundraiser.

Rob Miller is the Democratic challenger to Wilson who was defeated by Wilson in the last round but is back to try again.  He is a veteran and supports the pro-union Employee Free Choice Act.  And as of Thursday afternoon, under 24 hours since Mr. Wilson broke protocol Mr. Miller, through ACT Blue, has raised over now $200,000 to "defeat the man that yelled 'liar' at Obama" and the DNCC says the total contribution is over $500,000. That’s some real cheddar for a largely unknown never been elected challenger.  Over 4,000 donations.  And it is still coming and probably will for a couple of days.  "Keep shoutin'" they say, "keep shoutin."
