The Call Out:

2011 – maybe it wasn’t quite 1968 but it was a year of great social upheaval. With 2011 behind us, the GTWA is holding the first in what will be a new series of Coffeehouses to discuss where we are as a movement, with this particular one featuring local activists who were involved in Occupy Toronto.

Three of the four speakers were involved in the day-to-day occupation, whether covering Occupy for media co-op while participating, or liaising in one way, shape or form between Occupy and the Labour movement. A fourth speaker will give more of a critical perspective on the Occupy experience, from a position of solidarity.

With the end of the encampment, questions need to be raised: Is this the beginning of a new community/labour coalition that we’ve been waiting for? Will the Occupy movement be able to sustain itself and help awaken a dormant labour movement?

How did the Occupy Toronto experience measure up with other Occupations? How did the existing Toronto far-left respond to Occupy at first, and then once it coalesced? Will Occupy be co-opted, or indeed, is it co-optable? These and other issues will be topics of comradely discussion.

This Coffeehouse was organized by the Greater Toronto Workers’ Assembly Internal Education and Political Development Committee (IEPD). Future Coffeehouses will be announced soon.

Brendan Bruce
Lana Goldberg
