The Network for Pan-Afrikan Solidarity (Toronto) extends a warm invitation for you to join us at the Afrikan Liberation Month Film Series.
The Afrikan Liberation Month Film Series will feature film screenings followed by intergenerational panel discussions and dialogue with various activists and community members. On Friday, February 24, 2012 we will screen:
The Road Taken, which “takes a nostalgic ride through history to present the experiences of Black sleeping-car porters who worked on Canada’s railways from the early 1900s through the 1960s.”
Panel discussion: Challenging racism and sexism in the workplace and labour movement.
Panelists:
– June Veecock, former Human Rights Director (Ontario Federation of Labour) and community activist: “Fighting Anti-Afrikan Racism in the labour market: Rebuilding the grassroots movement for employment equity.”
– Elbert Joseph, President, CUPE Local 2191: “Fighting racism and sexist racism in the labour movement: Organizing with racialized trade union members.”
– Kalmplex, artist and community activist: “Youth and the workplace: Barriers and challenges, youth speaker — (and what’s working, who’s doing it, how we can/should build/support).”
– Beixi Liu, organizer, Workers’ Action Centre: “Building grassroots and society-wide support for severely exploited workers: The case of the Worker’s Action Centre.”
We will focus on issues that deal with the material realities of the community and open a space for dialogue and commitment to year-long and ongoing organizing, mobilizing and education around the subjects raised in the films and the panel discussions.
We will use this gathering to reach out to Toronto’s Pan Afrikan community with the goal of advancing a more progressive political agenda for the material and socio-economic emancipation of all Afrikan peoples.
