Upon hearing credible reports of alleged disinformation and robo-calls disparaging candidates and misinforming voters of their polling locations in my city (London, Ontario), I formally submitted a complaint to Elections Canada. Yesterday (May 11, 2011), I received a response from Elections Canada (see below).
Regarding alleged disinformation calls (from inside or outside city or country):
When citizens cast their vote this election they should be aware of where their preferred party stands on issues relating to media policy and democratic communations. As I said when I first conducted and election survey on media and cultural issues in 2006, called Where the Parties Stand on Culture - policy decisions in the cultural realm, will ultimately impact on our media's ability to cover and inform citizens with regards all other important issues, be they related to health care, the economy, the environment, or to matters of war and peace.
The first 48 hours of "news" content of Canada's "new" addition to our mediascape -- the Sun TV News channel -- proves that nothing new has transpired. The following 3 tweets regarding Sun TV "News" seems to sum up this ORGANization's purpose, as evidenced by the proof in its pudding/content/pablum for the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC), and is all this propaganda outlet deserves.
Tweet #1 (from: @MediatedJustice to #xlxn42 and #cdnpoli):
Sun TV News is the real State Broadcaster. After 2 days of all pro-Harper/anti-Iggy content this "new" voice is the Pravda Of The CPC
As millions of Canadians and Americans (and others worldwide) sat down last night to watch the opening ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, CTV and NBC seem to have made a barbaric and Machiavellian ratings decision to broadcast the Olympic equivalent of a snuff-film.
While CTV and NBC have made attempts to justify their decision to broadcast the death of a Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili, one really needs to wonder (little) if the nationality of Kumaritashvili had been Canadian or American, would the network executives have made a different decision.
At a time like this, it's useful to reflect and ask hard questions about Haiti's past if we are to truly help Haiti's future. Click on this 2008 interview with Peter Hallward: Failing Haiti: An Interview with Peter Hallward
As people in North America and worldwide continue to donate funds in order to help the people of Haiti recover from the earthquake, a Canadian-American organization called Healing Hands for Haiti is already on the ground helping Haitians meet their immediate and long term health and disability needs. The following is an interview with this organization’s Executive Director, Eric Doubt.
Paul Boin: I understand that your organization’s facilities were also damaged by the recent earthquake in Haiti.
On January 25 the CAMPAIGN FOR DEMOCRATIC MEDIA launched a quality news manifesto/campaign to pressure the CRTC and our elected officials to protect and improve the quality and diversity of news in the Canadian media landscape. This initiative/manifesto already has 863 electronic signatures. Please read the Manifesto below and consider SIGNING THIS MANIFESTO.
While the rest of the western mainstream media (having not learned their lessons from their role in aiding and abetting the 2003 Iraq war) seem all to willing to let warmongers get the best of them, the Globe and Mail's Doug Saunders has given the global public interest some hope for his profession and a more peaceful world.
As American and global citizens look forward to President Obama’s historic and hopeful day today, I wonder how, or if or how much, the world would be different if Barack Obama had been President on September 11, 2001. This was before the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, and before “The War on Terror.” How might our world today be different had an Obama administration been in Washington over the past 8 years? How could/should have western nations responded differently? How could American and global citizens have responded differently?
